View Full Version : My Tannoy Upgrade - as recommended by Paul @ Reference Fidelity Components
Latest project is to improve the internals of my Tannoy Berkeley speakers prior to installing external crossovers, although I'll need to find some wood for internal bracing before I start using the items listed here.
My external crossovers from Paul @ Reference Fidelity Components will be here on Monday so I'm really excited about that having mulled over the decision to order them for nearly a year, I finally decided to order them a few weeks ago. I've gone for Paul's top model.
Biggest issue is moving ALL the kit to tidy up all the cabling and sorting the kit stand as this will be the final setup once done. I DON'T want to see any cabling etc once it's all tidied, but I have plans for that too.
So.... Screwing, hammering, drilling to be done, what COULD possibly go wrong

Excellent project Mike. I replaced the capacitors in my HPD crossovers and there was a massive difference. The midrange became so natural I realised there had been a slight shrillness all along. Image stability improved too. They took about 15 hrs to run in though, sounded dull and flat with no bass punch at first. Paul’s top model should be a few leagues above this, I think you’ll be gob smacked.
Anyway, happy modding!

Really looking forward to getting them done, not that keen on the process in case I damage something, plus I want it done yesterday [emoji23]

So that's the foam removed from one speaker, I'll need to do the other one and then source some 2" x 3/4" or 2" x 1/2" strapping for the extra bracing.
Going to try and get the speakers ready by Monday when the new crossovers will arrive. Then it will just be a case of plugging them in and then sorting/tidying the cabling behind the unit the kit sits on.

Looking forward to having them finished, mind you my power amp is still away for repair and no word of return yet, 4 weeks and counting, at this rate I don't expect to see it back before Xmas :(

The stick on damping sheet will help reduce panel vibration and the sculptured foam will reduce internal reflections and damp higher frequencies, but you will also need something else to tame the bass resonance. Teased long fibre wool is very effective.
Do a bit of Googling about speaker damping and you'll see what I'm getting at.

Wooo, I do enjoy threads like this with lots of pictures.
Having heard the difference Paul's crossovers did for Adam's (westlower) Tannoys you are in for a massive treat.
Are you going to install new speaker connections to the cab or just wire them direct from the new external crossovers?

Slight hiccup, the acoustic foam needs to be changed :(
Replacement won’t be here until Tuesday so won’t get them finished until then.
I’ll do the Silent Coat soundproof mat and extra bracing tomorrow, then I’ll just have to sit and admire the crossovers when they arrive on Monday.

will you bypass the tone controls?
Why does it need changing?
I should have bought the wedge shaped stuff, not the egg box one, no major difference but Paul’s tweaks are based on the wedge version so I’ll stick to that, no real issue only an extra days wait.
will you bypass the tone controls?
Yes, as they are attached to the original crossovers and the new ones bypass everything, the tone controls will be put back in once foaming done, but only to fill the gap they come out of and not leave a gaping hole in the front baffle.
More progress this morning ....

Ok so I've tidied up my cabling and put back in my old HiFi unit, won't be ideal for the Primaluna power amp when it comes back due to ventilation but I might add some extra vent holes at the rear and install a couple of silent PC fans to the rear of the unit to draw the hot air out, have 2 spare 5v outputs on the linear PSU that's currently ( ;) ) powering the DAC and the SoTm streamer so those might do, if not I also have a 19v output unused too so might have to use that if can't find 5v ones as I'm sure most PC fans are 12v.
The other alternative would be to put the amp on the top shelf and TT on the bottom, which again isn't ideal but would banish any heat issues for the amp :)
Speakers are still unfinished as I'm waiting on replacement foam and the crossovers arriving today and tomorrow.

If you use 12V fans at 5V then you will get slower and quieter fans that should give enough air movement, particularly with two I would have thought.
Every 12V fan I have tried starts and runs at 5V.

Mike, if you are considering adding fans for heat control suggest you look at the Blacksilent fans produced by Blacknoise technologies (https://www.blacknoise.com/site/en/home.php). I've used several in various applications and they have very low noise even when spinning fast. Add a thermostat enabled fan controller and life will be good. :)
Your Tannoys looking awesome btw.

No worries, like I say Paul’s been stung before by letting someone see his designs/values etc and they now use them to sell their ‘own’ versions. So as you can imagine I’m not wanting to be responsible for revealing too much.

I'd be showing off the crossovers. Pop them beside them. I like electronics on show. Speaker looks greatI did think that originally but I had Paul put the input and output on different ends as I was going to hide them, now that means they will definitely need to go behind as the cables won't look tidy at all, wishing now I'd gotten them both at the same end :(

Hmm. No, I'd keep them hid - the wood on the xover boxes looks very different to the speaker cabs, or is that just a lighting effect?

Nice xmas theme going on there! :)
Initial impressions on SQ? Or perhaps too early to tell?Still have to hook them up, I'll do that this morning before heading out at 10.
I'll not get a proper listen until later this afternoon. To be honest I'm not expecting too much from the changes initially as it will take a few hours for them to settle down and I can only use an AV amp on them just now until my power amp gets back from repair.
I should have mentioned that the difference in the cabinets is now quite obvious, if you tapped one that had been treated with the Silent Coat and the Acoustic Foam it sounded quite dead and didn't resonate whereas the untreated one sounded a lot lighter so that's a difference right away.

Might take quite a while to settle down Mike, I’ve known some caps to take an age to run in. YMMV of course.

No ETA yet?
No ETA yet?Nope, be 5 weeks on Saturday since I dropped it off at the shop, I was told last week that the Primaluna Distributor only has one engineer and he's not the fastest!
If I'd known that BEFORE I dropped it off, I would have had someone else check it out first ;)
OR I would have sent it back to the Netherlands to Primaluna themselves, I'm sure they'd be faster lol
We have sound :eyebrows:

Great thread, I bet your happy now with the Tannoy's. They are very addictive.
so, hows it sounding mike?I've only managed about 3 hours on them and only an old AV amp for power duties so unable to assess properly so far, I'm hoping my Primaluna power amp is back soon, but looking at the forecast I doubt I'll get oo'er the watter to collect it, especially as I'll be travelling down from Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon :(
Up in Aberdeen already so no chance of a listen until Saturday night at the earliest
Great thread, I bet your happy now with the Tannoy's. They are very addictive. Thanks, I really enjoyed doing the work, which for someone who hates DIY was very satisfying.
I forgot to mention that I also added foam tape to the rear of the driver edges to cushion them against the baffle, I got the tape from Cooky last year when I had the drivers reconed but they were already back in the cabinets by the time the tape arrived.
So thanks for that Cooky, good to finally get it fitted ;)

What model is that Marantz amp as seen in your video?
S.
Now you're asking, give me a minute or two and I'll try and find the model number, it's one of their Slimline AV amps.
Edit:
Marantz NR1603
Bought second hand to use alongside the HiFi so I could still run my projector and 7ft screen that drops down just above the HiFi unit :D

Thanks, Mike. Does the Marantz sound 'passable' for the money?
S.
It actually does sound ok, I bought the Marantz for the height, it used to sit underneath the bottom shelf of the Ikea coffee table I was using for a HiFi unit up until I worked on the speakers.
Mind you I'm pretty sure when the Primaluna comes back I'll really notice how feeble the Marantz sounds in comparison, mind you it's shortcomings are more apparent when you start to push the volume ;)
Is it HiFi?
No but it's passable for background listening.

Mind and let the burning in have some time....probably need to give the amp time aswell depending on what they have done during the repair.
Be interesting to read your impressions as things settle down over time.

I'll look forward to your findingsI'm usually cackhanded too, but I'll be honest I found this pretty easy, the only risky bit is removing and handling the drivers. Everything else is easy.
I'd do it again no problem.
I think even just adding the extra bracing and acoustic foam made a big difference, you could tell right away when you tapped your knuckles on the cabinets before and after. So I would say that a cheap and easy upgrade would be that on it's own. Obviously doing the crossovers can be done at different levels too, whether it be a recapping or full blown replacement I'm pretty sure each level would bring improvements, albeit incremental to whatever level you chose.
For the cabinets I bought 24 x 30cm square wedge shaped acoustic foam - £28 inc delivery. 20 Sheets of 2mm Silent Coat - £45 inc delivery and a 2.4m length of 50mm x 18mm softwood strapping - £3.30 from Homebase. So for around £80 I'm sure you would hear improvements
Thanks for the info. I just might give it a go over Xmas.

Mike, was it 2mm silent coat you used?It was, I forgot to mention that, I'll update my post.
For the Silent Coat you'll need to staple it in too, it's very sticky but it does also need to be stapled in place. It was a easy enough to work with, just cut it with a pair of scissors to whatever size and shape you need.
yup, when i used it, i sprayed the cabs with carpet adhesive.. that worked too:lol:

I am also interested to know.
Maybe not had much time to listen with it being Christmas and that.

Mike, system looks great but I'd experiment with speaker placement. It might be an idea to push your main rack as far back as you can against the back wall and maybe fetch the speakers forward a few inches. You might improve your soundstage. I have the same problem in that my listening room is not wide (less than 3 meters) and I have a large rack which nearly equals my Tannoy speaker cab height. This is not ideal, so I'm trying to reconfigure and lower my rack height, I'm hopeful that this may improve stereo imaging. This is one of the downsides of small rooms and large speaker cabs ;). Maybe you already have a great soundstage but I thought I'd share some thoughts!!!!
Yes, I'd be interested to, thinking of updating the crossovers in my Ardens (they came with replacement crossovers which, for whatever reason, were never fitted) but they're sounding so good with the new cdt/dac/amp combination I might just leave them alone.
Mike, so how are they sounding? I'm betting you're too busy listening to find time to give us your thoughts ;)

He's probably got a 12" long beard and lost several stones in weight due to not coming out of his listening room for several months!!
Ok, sorry I've not updated before now, I was still having amp issues up until about the beginning of last week when I discovered that all that was wrong with it was a poorly driver valve grrrr. Mind you took a few days swapping around to identify the valve in question as my amp has 8 power valves and 6 x 12au7s for the gain/driver side.
Just a pity the distributors technician hadn't told the shop what was wrong, might have saved me a ton of grief and frustration. The shop received no info as to what the issue was at all so that wasn't a great help.
Never mind, amp is back on track.
Right, the crossovers....
Once I'd actually sat down to listen properly, I didn't like them at all, this was to be expected, Paul had told me to give them about 15 hours or so to burn in. Initially they sounded bass light, this I was told was normal until a few hours had passed. He wasn't wrong, after a couple of days they really came on song.
I had already taken Rextons advice about bringing the speakers slightly more forward to avoid the rack. Paul had funnily enough emailed me to say the exact same thing [emoji6]
First thing I noticed with the bass was that bass guitar sounded more real, the notes sounded more like you would expect to sound like when a string was plucked if that makes sense.
Vocals sounded better, I'd lost the edge I sometimes had when things got a little loud, perfect just what I was hoping for.
Soundstage was better, wider, deeper although that was no doubt also helped by slight adjustment in speaker position too.
I could hear individual instruments a lot clearer, and I could place them better in the mix rather than just in front of me, I sometimes hear instruments a lot nearer and wider than I did before.
Worthy upgrade?
Well I would say definitely for me anyway. Now I know that maybe sounds like the speakers were crap before, they weren't, Tony and Brian have heard my system prior to the crossover changes and really rated it especially on vinyl. Both with differing tastes, I trust their views.
I'll need to invite them back to hear the system now, different pre amp ( which I'm still looking to replace ) so that will be an interesting listen for them to see if I've improved that side or not. I think so, but it's still not perfect, the little Velleman struggles when pushed to 11, but it has more drive and dynamics than the TVC I used previously.
Not a cheap upgrade for sure but the uplift in sound quality and with the quality of the workmanship, if you have a set of Tannoys it's definitely worth doing. Bear in mind that Paul does several options price wise, I went for the top of his range, mainly because I thought buy once and no need to look at them again.
Be interesting to hear a standard pair next to mine.
I'm pretty sure even just doing the work I did following Paul's advice with the cabinets makes a big difference, Paul's crossovers take them even further. Unless we move house or we end up broke these Berkeleys are going nowhere [emoji6][emoji4]
I'll give you one indicator as to how much I've enjoyed the upgrades, I've hardly been gaming on my PC since they've been done, and let me tell you I can game 6-8 hours a day, the counter I use for my stylus has taken a hammering [emoji23]

Irritating about the amp, though - hopefully it's all now sorted.Yeah my thoughts too, I only got the amp back to 100% last week so I wasn't really focussing on how the speakers sounded, I could tell they were better but couldn't sit down and have a decent listen without faffing about switching the amp off, letting valves cool down and then swap one and so on.
I'll be honest, I sent a text Tony ( weeteecee ) to say I was selling everything and giving up I was so frustrated and fed up with it all.

The XO's typically take about 15-30 to kick in. I had the same problem with mine, I wondered what the hell I'd done and then overnight they just seem to come alive. No looking back now.
Thanks for the update Mike. I suppose it's something of a gamble to alter the character of a speaker when you're already happy with the way they are. That's where I am at the moment.
Something to consider I think for the future.

Mind you I could have saved a bit of cash getting plain boxes but I liked the look of the veneer ones so much I had to have them just in case they would be on display.

Hi Mike, Read your thread with interest as I'm soon to start rebuilding the XO for my Monitor Golds.
Looking at pics of your room I notice that you could improve performance further. The smaller the room the more important the room treatment. What you could try just to get an idea the difference it would make is to get two mattresses and lie one either side of the room. In your case they would be quite close to each speaker. The highly reflective radiator is not doing you any favours.
If sound is left to decay naturally it bounces around the room and in addition to the direct sound you get delayed reflections at your ears causing congestion and smear, playing havoc with detail and imaging. Its a fun experiment but family could complain if left there for too long
The mattress will not be a true broad-band absorber but you will hear the potential. I got some fabric printed with an artistic scene of a jazz band to cover my frames and they add to the room. Wife loves them.
There is lots of info on the net regarding room treatment.
Thanks for the help, not much I'll be able to do regards acoustic stuff I'm afraid. Although this room is narrow at the Hi-Fi end it opens up into the main part of that living room and I tend to sit about 9m away so imaging isn't an issue for me.
This has been really interesting to read as i'm thinking over deeply about getting some Berkleys ...thanks all for posting in this thread

1: definitely doable, easy.
2: I had the in fitted on one end and the out on the opposite end, in hindsight I should have had them both at the same end.
3: No not really, only thing I might have considered was building bigger cabinets, as that seems to be a big benefit to the 15” drivers, but I don’t have the room so it was never an option.
Actually thinking again, I would have had Frank (Cooky) do my refoam and saved some cash
Can i ask how many straps you made ? i can see the one supplimenting the existing front to back support did you create more of them with your 2.4m ? ... many thanks
I used almost all of the 2.4m with only a very short piece left.
I strapped around all 4 sides mirroring what was there already if I remember right.

You’ll see in this photo that the bracing goes along the back, the sides and what you can’t see it that it goes along the front too. So all 4 sides to be done.

In terms of crossovers you could try a cheaper solution and that is to restore the existing crossovers. That is what I did with my Berkeley crossovers - or rather Paul C did on mine. He helpfully also did a walk-through of the process (see his facebook page) which you could follow (with suitable care) if you are confident with a soldering iron. It made an enormous difference.
I also followed the same process of implementing new internal damping etc with help from Paul C and a huge amount from Mike (mikeyb). Thanks once again Mike! The hardest part I found was removing all the old cabinet damping. Takes time.

I'd be more inclined to brace side to side and back to front internally in a couple of places. More effective and occupies less cabinet volume. You can even bond the braces to each other where they cross for even more stiffness and they don't need to be big and bulky to work.

Good point Mike .... i'll drop Paul a line to ask if there's any downside or upside to extra bracing ...

I did after re-reading this thread a few times ....i've ordered EQ Acoustics Premium Acoustic Foam Tile Kit, 16 Pack, 30 x 30 x 5cm Classic Wedge Tiles... i think you ordered 24 tiles .. they only had 16's so i've got 1 pack of 16 first and i'll do 1 speaker and see how many tiles that uses ...i'm expecting to have to order another pack tbh...but as its next day delivery its not an issue ..

Not sure about that, they already have bracing around the middle anyway and what I fitted on advice from Paul at RFC was just to add it there, I would think if it needed more he would have said so.
Thanks for all your help so far .... Paul has suggested if i want i could add a 2nd brace just above the driver mirroring the one you did below it ...a further quick question the bracing you added glued or screwed or both ? ...

Thanks Mike ..... sorry for the simple questions ..this is my first time doing any work on speakers :)

I decided on no glue mostly because I didn't have any to hand and I had plenty decking screws left over from another job [emoji6]

I think i'm going to go screws and glue as i already have some to hand ...:)
A further question here for MikeyB or all ... any quick wins on getting the remaining foam off the inside of the cabinet walls i've peeled it all off but little bits are left i'm going at it pickling with my fingers and also trying a wallpaper scraper thats metal bladed which is getting there very very slowly with lots of elbow grease ... that might be the way to go ..but as i'm into the 2nd hour today thought i'd post incase i'm missing a trick ...but i do know MikeyB did say it was a pita to do ...

Make sure the chisel still has a sharp edge.
Don't try to remove the black sound deadening material. That is there for eternity.

There is nothing under the foam in mine ... and a chisel is a great tip ...thanks .... this is the first step then bracing (as Paul a RFC has advised me on then Silent coat ...then Wedge foam as a final step and somewhere in the mix i will be sorting out the outside as they have a few scrapes and water marks ...
many thanks Edward....:)

Hi Mikeyb....just a thought if i have enough Silent coat should i be wrapping the port tubes in it ?

Lovely looking Berkeley’s at the beginning of this post. I did the classic “reads two pages before realising how old the thread is” move. Good luck with everyone’s upgrades, the HPD’s are excellent speakers.

Ok Mike... over to anyone else to add thoughts almost got the first speaker clean of foam ...
I did not bother. Can't recall if I asked Paul about that. In any event I suspect it is not needed and/or possibly could change the tuning.

I had thoughts along those lines.

A quick win usually ends in disaster..My advice would be to go the way you are going...take your time and use the elbow grease...you'll not cause any damage that way...and I'm confident you'll get the result you're after...
I didn't get mine to completely clean wood after removing the foam, it left a light covering of little flecks in places. I just covered it with the soundproofing foil,

If you put a batten across the face of a panel, what have you done? You may have reduced the amplitude of its main mode, but you will have produced two smaller panels with higher resonance and lost cabinet volume. Bracing struts between opposing faces work better at reducing vibrations and take up less volume.

The battening wood i've got is 18mm x 44mm slightly smaller than Mike got, but the nearest size i could get hold of..
i'll be bracing exactly as Mike did adding to the original tannoy bracing effectively extending it all around the cab walls just below the driver .. then Paul has suggested it could well benefit me by effectively repeating that above the the driver which looking at my cab seems to be putting the new bracing almost but not quite butting up to the top of the speaker ..with this top one i'm thinking to screw only so that it could be reversed out easily if need be and i won't be adding a center brace board to the top strapping (like the existing tannoy one on the lower bracing) it will simply be the four sides being braced ....
all thoughts welcome ...

I don't seem to be getting through. Think about what you plan and what the effects may be. Whacking battens onto cabinet walls is about the least effective approach. As I suggested, cross bracing is the way to go if you really think your speakers need it (they may well not).
This is what I'm talking about (in principle):

The ultimate interpretation of this idea was the 'Matrix' cabinets B&W introduced many years ago.

 My pal has a large pair of Koss CM-1030 speakers, and this is how we braced them...it works a treat

A picture paints a thousand words ..thanks :)
Geoff is absolutely right, and you can choose uneven distances to spread resonances of panel.
The dowels do not have to be made to do anything other than tightly slide into place, and then with a bit of PVA reposition them and they will set.
Corners can by filled with 'Scotia' moulding, and this will aid transfer of energy from panels to others so loosing energy, and also tighten up the box. I did this latter on my ATC SCM100 rebuilds, and the former on my ESS rebuild..

Yes, they should be glued in place, then they work in tension as well as compression.
Brilliant thanks chaps :)...I've all the foam out now of both cabs ...more updates as i go ..

For those stubborn bits of glue and foam that remain I used cellulose thinners to shrivel it up and then scraped it off with wallpaper scraper.
Worth at least considering if these old foams from the 70's are the type that kill you in a house fire...that said in the event my Tannoys would be the first thing I'd save from the inferno ;-)

Both cabinets cleanish now ..so today its Silent Coat day ...I will post a run of pics in DC ..... thats "due course" not dual concentric
Do staple the Silent Coat. Whilst the glue will work fine, over the years it may degrade resulting in the Silent Coat shifting.

Lloyd are you going to be including the woman (avatar) in your cabs, is that why she is in that position?

I have thanks ..around 4 staples per biggish piece of silent coat ..in the corners of each piece .. hoping thats about right ?

That’s probably a good height to aim for. Getting them off the ground certainly helps with bass quality too.
