Feeling bored this morning, had read good things about the CCA.

Took a trip to Currys.

So first impressions are very favorable, how can anything for £30 sound this good straight from the box?

Using some 3.5mm to RCA leads that I had lying around I played some familiar tunes. Tight, punchy and detailed, so musical.

Playing through my Audio Analogue Puccini SE amp to Ruark Templar 1 speakers, I'm impressed!

Waiting for Toslink lead to connect to my Jolida Glass FX Tube DAC to see any differences.

Oh you will, or at least you should. For a while I ran my CCA through a Jolida Glass FX DAC and it was a very pleasing sound.

Damn, I loved that Jolida DAC...

Which valves did you use?

I have a spare lightly-used pair of the Reliability Controlled tubes if you’re interested ;)

I tried Chromecast Audio a couple of weeks back.
Optical in to my DSP DACs / X/O unit.
With a linear 5v supply it is very good. With a Ethernet to usb converter and removing the switching PSU and giving it linear power it's insanely good!

With either Spotify or Tidal it has the better of my laptop / Jriver / WaveIO I2S input route.

Spotify is very sensitive to nice clean power and good streaming signal it seems, as until Ethernet / linear it was clearly inferior to Tidal. Now it's a level playing field.
How or why that is / can be I cannot explain.

I'm going to give my router a linear power supply next..

Connecting via DAC did indeed sound better all round, including soundstage.

Will look at power supply, as suggested above.

Well I took Gary's advice and got a Chromecast Audio yesterday and must say it's bloody impressive.
All I was using before was an old Galaxy S6 plugged into my amp via a headphone to RCA lead, the difference in sound is incredible.
Thanks for the recommendation

I finally got RPi + Kali reclocker outputting using I2S into my Najda DSP XO DAC properly.
With good power clean Lan RPi has the measure of Chromecast Audio using Spotify on both.
I can honestly say, it's sounding so good I won't be continuing with Tidal..
There are more setting to tweak in PuTTY too..

Not convinced by a clean power supply to an Internet based source, I think the battery in my phone is fairly clean but can't speak for the miles of cabling before my router

Not convinced by a clean power supply to an Internet based source, I think the battery in my phone is fairly clean but can't speak for the miles of cabling before my routerI look at it this way.
The cabling to your router is handled by your ISP and the protocols used if high speed and stable are quite capable of supplying the bits reliably (with necessary error correction automatically done seemlessly), enough for HD TV, streaming music etc.. having a router near your HiFi on the same ring main with a switching mode PSU spitting noise out noise that other gear and the router had to deal with is a good thing to cut out.

Going forwards I'm sure we'll see more and more audiophile routers as we understand more about streaming. If it measures better and sounds better it's worth doing..

As I've done more of these things the happier I am with the sound..

Easy to go back and try without them to confirm (which I've done).

Pleased your happy with it.

Did you set the SQ to the highest in Google Home App?

If or when you have a DAC you can run an optical cable from the CCA to DAC and get even better performance.

I believe ionising air filters are used by some. Possibly more in the US. I seem to recall seeing something about this, maybe targeted at reducing vinyl static though.

Now Google have killed Chromecast! I have 5 providing a very useful synchronised streaming through the house at surprisingly good quality particularly through the Beresford DACs .

I wonder how long they will remain supported, probably only a year or so. Any suggestions of what I could replace these with when the time comes? The Chromecasts replaced a bunch of old airport expresses that had lost support from Apple's networking set up software and I could never et properly time synchronised.

Sent from my Pixel XL using TapatalkIt is indeed, I was shocked when I read the CCA had optical out, really nice of Google to include that.

Does the lan to usb do anything other than increase the connectivity (since it's a wired connection)? If so I don't see it as necessary, I think the wireless connection is quite spot on. Can take a wee while booting up, especially if I've moved it from room to room but once it's going for a bit it seems flawless

In my case it is NOT due to poor WiFi. My router is just 1.5m from the CCA and low ping / very good down and upload speeds.

The improvement comes in turning off the wireless receiver / transmitter in CCA, which cleans up the sound.

I and others have found the same thing on PC and RPi based music servers too.

Yes from Google that's the setting.

On your Spotify account, go to settings, you will find a list of functions, one of them is sound quality ( I think that's what it's called, but it will be obvious) set that to the highest setting, that will enable highest output from Spotify, without doing this Spotify defaults to lowest speed.

All sorted :-) am I right in saying the Chromecast has the facility for optical out and is there much of a difference in sound quality is using a separate DAC? I’ve been tempted to get a separate DAC for a while now, purely because I need something that will also drive my headphones if I’m not using the speakers.

bought a cheap power bank off amazon to try with the cca-gave it a quick listen last night.

very noticeable improvement in detail retrieval and soundstage.

it produces far less sibilance than the standard supply....the bass is also tighter and far more multilayered.

fully charged it overnight will give it a proper listen tonight-well impressed tbh.

Re the battery power chargers - do they by any chance have high frequency switching or other circuits inside?
I don’t see how they can give a stable output without some circuitry, and if internal voltage changing is needed I don’t see how that could be done without either bulky and heavy transformers, or smaller ones with hf switching. Some circuit designs might avoid switching, but would then require more power stored and would be less efficient.

If there is complex circuitry in these devices (which I don’t know) is it not then possible that such circuitry might also have an adverse impact on the sound quality if connected to audio kit?

For ~£20 a powerbank is a no brainer even if it doesn't have the circuitry in question

The most important thing obviously is how it sounds

Ok - looks as though I was right that there’s some circuitry, but some Li battery cells can output 3.7V or slightly more - https://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/confusion_with_voltages

For a 3.7V output there’s thus no need for voltage changing circuitry, so the circuits are mostly for safety and charging. If other voltages are needed - to drive amps or some DACs then other circuitry will be needed. So I got this part wrong for a 3.6-3.7 volt device, but for other drive voltages more circuitry is needed. I’ll try my own chromecasts with my own storage batteries - from Lidl.

I’m not sure if there are battery units which do other voltages for other kit.

It runs on Volumio. If Iwas thinking of trying one the Project would be high on my list. Needs a separate DAC of course.

Linear PSU and WiFi, tried the Google Ethernet PSU as well.

Unable to try Linear PSU and Ethernet, I know this is possible but a: I won’t do that as I’m not able to and b: the CCA is far enough behind my existing setup that it’s not worth the bother.

My SoTm streamer beats the CCA too, but note this is all combos in my system and with my hearing, your results may differ.

I’m using a Chromecast via its analogue output into my Leben amp. My Roon Nucleus works very well with it, as you’d expect due to Chromecast being ‘Roon Ready’. It works up to a max output of 24/96 or 24/88.2. I’ve used it with my old Arcam airDAC before but the clicking relays were quite annoying. Works fine straight out of its own 3.5mm output though.

It would be good to have this comparison, with the proviso that it's like for like where possible. Both have to be fed into the same DAC with an equivalent optical lead, ensuring that the software is set to optimum.

The supply should be of similar quality.

The costs of both should be declared to help define cost benefits.

Any ancillary equipment that is required to make them work should be stated.

For the non tech of us a brief outline of initial setup procedures.

Of course this will always be subjective.

GaryI tried Spotify via the CCA and the Pi. Fed to the same DAC, same optical, same headphones. Pi used volumio to stream Spotify.

Pi: quite bright for my ears but plenty of sound stage and separation.

CCA: far more neutral, preferred this. Separation and sound stage was good but a few points short of the pi.

Detail was the same via both.

The comparison I didn't like was between my MBP and the Pi. Using the same hard drive to feed the FLAC files. Not sure if it's because I'm used to my Mpb and I like the way it sounds as a feed that I couldn't get used to FLAC on the Pi. Pi wasn't worse as far as I could tell just different and I didn't really like it.

Already been a couple of replies staying that the CCA is ok for the money but not as good as a Pi with add on DAC such as the Piano/Kali combo or the Digione.

I also mentioned it wasn't as good as my SoTm streamer, both CCA and SoTm into the same DAC albeit with different connections as one is optical and the other USB. CCA was a good bit behind in overall sound quality, soundstage less, bass less, not as detailed, treble had a slight harshness to it.

The CCA wasn't as good as my Amazon Fire TV using Spotify to my system via optical

Don't get me wrong, at under £30 the CCA is a great buy and would do well in most lower budget systems and is simple to set up and use. But in my system it couldn't compete.

As for like for like comparison with same setup, ain't gonna be easy, no easy way to get linear PSU AND Ethernet connection into the CCA ( I don't think off the shelf anyway ) and only a few of Pi DAC Hats use optical and those that do aren't as good as the Allo dacs.

So it would need someone with a bit of cash and the know how to bodge a linear/ethernet doohicky, simpler just stick to your budget and buy whichever one suits that.

GaryNo I've only tried the CCA through speakers, comparing it with the Spotify app on my TV, needless to say it blew the TV out of the water lol.

I read with great interest and enthusiasm about using chromecast audio, I use it myself as well.
I took a great advice to use battery-pack for powering the little dongle, with great benefit.
However few questions rose.

What about connecting the power-pack ITSELF to the wall, while it is powering the CCA?
Would you expect this to ruin the benefit? Has anyone done it? I can and will try it myself,
however I am curious about opinions, since I find people here to be very knowledgeable.

And another question: I read that giving it internet through a cable is beneficial since it
turns off the Wi-Fi apparatus on CCA, thus lessening the "pollution". But - are we not
through that opening a door for ANOTHER "pollution" which comes through the internet
cable from my (electrical) router? Hence - perhaps we cure one disease with another?

Thirdly - also I have read recommendations to use optical connection. I agree very much, since
that as far as I know guides the signal to, in most cases, to a better DAC. I do so and I am happy.
However - it is recommended to use good quality cable for that. I don't really understand that.
The way I see it - the binary code runs through that cable, runs straight to the DAC of my Receiver.
Perhaps I am stupid, but the way I see it - whatever how I download or upload data, say to
my computer, or phone or to Receiver or CCA, as long as it is in binary code, it CAN NOT lose
its quality. Am I really wrong? If I download the photo of Mona Lisa to my PC and take 2 hours
for it through the very worst wireless internet - the famous smile will still be exactly the same!
Is that not so? Have you ever lost data through bad connection? I don't see that happening - the
file either comes as perfect as it is, OR it wont come at all or it will come broken.
I would be hugely thankful if someone could shine a little light on this matter of expensive quality
cables for digital (binary) signals.

And for last I share something that I found interesting while using my equipment.
I am planning on upgrading but for now I have Onkyo TX-8220 receiver for amplification.
Having made the purchase hastily I noticed later, that the manual stated smth like this
"192 kHz/24-bit (PCM1754) Digital-to-Analog Converter*
* 96 kHz/24-bit D/A conversion. "

I immediately went bananas and asked them - which is it then? 192 or 96?
The answer was unexpected - they told me that this was PRINTED WRONG.
Since I saw the same info on 2 places on manual and ALSO at their website I was not
impressed and told them - if this is the case, at least do correct your own home page!!
And they again reassured that this was error and that they WILL correct it. It did not happen
for few weeks, but now it has happened. They have removed the * 96 kHz/24-bit D/A conversion.
However it still is printed on thousands of manuals.
Of course - I specially downloaded this file with 192kHz sample rate, and it worked fine.
But this also did not go without doubt and confusion

In order not to use the DAC of CCA (and through so not test the Onkyo) I realized that
I need to connect CCA via optical cable. Yes, that I did. And to my delight the file ran
through the cable into the DAC of Onkyo, got processed to analog and exited through my speakers
as a moving air. All good so far.
Then I remembered that CCA support page states that CCA only is capable of 96 kHz file.
I realized that to test that inner DAC I need to connect it to Onkyo via analog cable.
Yep. Did it, and fed it the same 192kHz file. And NOT to my delight the music still played from speakers.
Why? Another thing that I can not understand. The limit don't seem to apply.
Or may be - perhaps it still CAN use the 192kHz file, just butchers it into 96kHz.
That seems to be the only logical explanation for me.

I thank anyone to have read my lengthy post and specially those who are willing to comment
on the problems and questions I have mentioned here. I am very much enjoying this forum
and learning about audio, also I have found new love for music as my setup is also
improving often now.

Although it is not recommended for some batteries, most of the Li ion power packs I have used can be charged and discharged at the same time (e.g. Ankaka, Anker, Castle). I cannot notice any real difference whether the charging cable is connected or not but I tend to remove the charging cable when listening anyway.

I'm the same, I don't find it much hassle to remove the cable before listening and reconnect after listening (to charge again).

I always feel like it will affect the sound even though I don't have any evidence it does

Do I need an extra bit of kit for that? You need to use something like Bubble UPnP app ( Android ) but any UPnP/DLNA app will do.

That can link to a Nas drive so I'm assuming PC too. Only thing is you'll need the PC fired up the whole time you're listening, I'm sure you'll be about to 'link' to your PC hard drive where you're music is kept.

Then you'll be able to choose the CCA as a renderer and control where it takes the music from.

I've added a screenshot of all the streaming devices in my house that Bubble sees and can use as a music renderer, plus another shot of my Nas drive on Bubble. So you can see what bubble can control.

Upside is your connection will be quicker, downside is I don't know if POE sounds worse than powering the CCA with a portable battery pack. If you power your CCA from the wall already then there's no downsides to trying POE as far as I can tell

With rpi do you have to have a wired connection to your laptop/smart phone or is there a wireless option?

Worth having the rpi hard wired to your router though if you can have it close enough to do that.

Yeh can hard wire the rpi to my router, does that mean that I don't need any sort of wired connection from my laptop then?

if going to external dac you need a mini toslink to toslink cable. if taking analogue out you need a 3.5mm to 3.5mm or rca.

if you got a tos to tos you can buy a mini tos adaptor

Sounds like you've bought standard toslink with the same size plugs at either end.

You need the mini toslink at one end which looks like a headphone jack.

So when you say mini toslink you mean the 3.5mm end that goes into the cca? I have a standard toslink cable, the smaller end fits in the Xiang sheng, but the other end is the bigger toslink, obviously I need a 3.5mm for the CCA

The end you think is too big (the dac end) probably just needs twisting through 90/180/270 degrees as it will only slot in one way unlike the mini toslink end

first is finding the cca's transmission in your list of wifi's on phone. if it doesnt show switch it off and then start again. it only puts it out for so long.connect your phone to it and then go to the app again and it will then ask you to put in your home wifi

Have a good old listen in both states Mike playing the same tracks in as quieter conditions as you can muster and see what you prefer.

Play a familiar track in tubless mode then play the exact same track again with the tube in the chain. I reckon you will hear a difference even if only a small one.

However what you prefer might take time to work out.

Is there a break in period on this Xiang sheng? Also is it much different in 'tube' mode? At the mo sounds a bit thick and warm. Why don't you just try the tube mode? All you need to do is move the RCAs.

You can easily change the sound by changing the valves.

I dislike solid state DACs as this isn't an option.

I don't think it changes with burn in. Mind you I don't think anything gets much different with burn in. If you don't like it move on to something else.
