9C, gloomy as hell and pouring with rain today.
Overcast and grey, some intermittent drizzle.
Pretty much the same here as you Macca.
cold here.. dry now but everything is sodden. no wind to talk of at moment.. maybe 4/5c
Nice and bright/dry here in Wrexham, after two days of pissing it down... Not too cold either. Will be going out for a nice walk later in our local park. Love seeing all the lovely russet autumn colours on the trees and collecting some conkers!:)

And mine too. Makes going to work a pain in the arse and getting home can take an hour and a half. And that's assuming there's no accidents which is unlikely as the idiots are smashing into each other all the time even in fine weather.
Forecast says we might get a little snow this week but not much. Hoping it's none.

I've never heard they had the best chippy in the world, but when I was young there were many excellent Fish and Chips shops here, and don't forget they used lard in those days, not oil. I left Grimsby nearly 12 years ago and only returned 3 months ago. Before I left I used a shop in Cleethorpes, which for me were the best and quite close to were I lived. (note to self, must try there again) Haddock is the main stay fish used in shops, rather than Cod.
Yeah, the ONLY (other than whiting) fish to use for fish and chips. Cod is pish in comparison, and sadly all you get down here. Finding a chippy that serves haddock is rare.

The best chippie I've ever tried is down in Cornwall at the Lizard village. It's Britains southernmost chip shop. They fry a variety of locally caught and very fresh fish. Last time I was in there, I tried Gurnod and chips, it was delicious! One can always opt for the regular Cod or Haddock of course.

Yeah, seaside locations (no surprises there), all over the UK, are usually the places to find the best chippies, especially long established family-run establishments that take a real pride in the products they sell.

Totally agree... The norm now, even when they're decent, is still for them to be on the mushy and greasy side, so that they all stick together, rather than being fully separated, nicely firm, dry (slightly golden), and properly 'chip-shaped'. The worst sin of all, is to serve them still with 'eyes' in!:rolleyes::nono:
When my dad had his shop, after the potatoes had been put through the cutting machine, he'd go through the baskets of cut chips, take out any that he noticed with 'eyes' still in, and cut them out with a knife, so that every chip that went into the fryer was perfect, even in terms of being a uniform size, so that they all cooked evenly...
Labour intensive, yes, but he had very high standards, which earned him a fantastic reputation, meaning that folks would travel for miles to go to his shop - even football supporters buses would make a detour, on the way home from matches, to call in for their fish suppers! He had a great business:)
He even made his own malt vinegar, from a secret recipe, which gave the chips a unique flavour, and which his customers loved. I think him having those sorts of standards is partly the reason why I have the same now with food, even on a basic level with fish and chips. It doesn't matter *what* it is being cooked, if it's done, it has to be done RIGHT! :exactly:
Nowadays, so many chippies buy their chips in, already cut, so they're not fresh and NEVER taste the same. They don't even fry right, and indeed often aren't even made from the right type of potato. My dad would always use Maris Pipers or Kerr's Pinks.
And with fish, it was always fresh (haddock or line-caught whiting), never frozen. He even closed his shop on Mondays, because fishing boats didn't go out on a Sunday, so there was no fresh fish available for the following day.
Then on Tuesday, when the shop reopened, and for the rest of the week, he had a good relationship with the fishmonger in the village, who used to bring him down all the fish he needed from the fish market in Glasgow, fresh every morning, when he went there himself to get stuff for his shop, and in turn we always bought our fish (for the house) from him, especially when we wanted something really nice, such as lemon sole or sea bass.
That's how small communities used to work together and help each other. Great days!:cool:

Have to agree, good chips are harder to get. The best chips I've had were fried by my Grandad, my Mum, a good traditional cook herself, told me he always made excellent chips. :lol:

Yup, I agree. On balance, soggy/stodgy batter is what's liable to spoil things most, unless the fish is really rank (which can indeed happen often these days)!
I also preferred chippies, when they were *chippies*, and only sold traditional stuff, and none of yer kebabs, pizzas and curry bollocks. Concentrate on doing ONE thing well, than many things simply with mediocrity!

Yup, but the line-caught whiting my dad used was quite a bit better than the ordinary stuff from nets! They made for a great fish supper, or 'fish tea', as they say down here:)

One advantage of chippys here is there's no queue. In Liverpool the queue would go right around the shop, out the door and down the street at teatime.

Lol - if the fish is good quality and been properly fried (fresh) in the first place, it won't need to sit under a heat source to 'crisp up'! It'll be perfect, straight out the pan and into the container:)
Doesn't bother me waiting (all good things come to those who wait), if doing so results in a better product. I guess it's a 'quality vs. convenience' thing, and for me the former is ALWAYS more important. Same in a restaurant... If the food arrives at the table too quickly, you can pretty much guarantee it's not been cooked fresh to order.
I won't eat at any restaurant where that's not the case. Problem is, everyone's in too much of a bloody hurry these days to relax and enjoy the nice things in life!

Indeed, but my point is that the batter won't need to 'crisp up' under an external heat source, if the fish has been fried properly in the first place. It'll be perfect, straight out of the pan.

yesterday was the most lovely day , attended a buriel outside and was dreading it . but the sun was shining , the birds were singing and it was pretty marvellous really . rather glad as average age of attendees was elderly
4 degrees here, and the wind is bitterly cold. Pitch black when I leave the house in the morning, pitch black when I get out of work in the evening. And there's at least another three months of this yet!
Think I might move to Florida and live in a shack out in the swamps. Shoot alligators for food. It's got to be better than this.

Nah I've watched those Bear Grylls things, you just have to knock up a shelter that's off the ground a bit. How hard can that be? Mozzers, no problem, kill em with dynamite. Not too keen on big spiders, though. Do they have them out there?

Rubbish I remember one time I was in Sydney for a training course (I was living in New Zealand at the time so not as exotic as you might think) anyway I took a day trip to Manley, bought a banjo and an instruction book in a second hand shop, and by the time the ferry got back across the water (about 45 minutes) I could play the damn thing. Dead easy.
If you can play guitar banjo can be picked up to a reasonable standard in an afternoon.

I think the difference is that you clearly have musical talent and I have none.
I remember one of my brothers (who could already play violin and piano to a very high standard) getting hold of my first electric guitar and within a day or two he could play it like Hendrix.
My Bro was like that. He can pick up an instrument and get a tune out of it

I'm quite proficient on the big gong, like the one you see at the beginning of old Rank movies :). It comes in handy at dinner time too.

That reminds me, I'm due for my daily blowout shortly... In order to prevent their asphyxiation, I just need to ensure that the cats aren't hiding somewhere in the bathroom, before engaging 'full release'.

It's about 2C now, but feels really icy, must be the humidity.

Never mind, had the house to myself this afternoon, so the gramophone got a workout, and I followed that with a film about a famously long mafia trial - Vin Diesel without any car chases for a change.

5C and dull here. Typically uninspiring Xmas weather.
sun is hitting one of the cars on front street; its melting nothing :doh:
It was cold (4°C) and foggy this morning at 7.30am, when we went to the butchers to collect the goose, but nice and sunny now:)
Got a nice chillax'd day ahead... Help Del prepare the meal for tomorrow, clean the house (not that it's that dirty, but want it spick and span), make up the base of the pre-lunch cocktail were having tomorrow: https://www.halfbakedharvest.com/spicy-pomegranate-moscow-mule/, set and decorate the dinner table for tomorrow, then off to church later for mass and some carol singing!
Then back home to relax in front of the fire with some nice nibbles and a few glasses of vino:cheers:

This is one of my favourite times of the year, when most of the 'rabble' (lol) are back at work, and the shops and towns are quiet, with a lot of folks still away on holiday, and Del is off work for nearly another week, so we can enjoy some relaxing quality time together, and get a break from entertaining others!
Consequently, we're going out for a few drinks later at a local country pub, and then a meal at a nice Chinese restaurant, as we need a change of food from the typical 'Xmas fayre' we've been having for the last 2 weeks! Looking forward to it:cool:

How's it going with the new motor Grant? Have you run it enough to get an idea of fuel economy? I don't trust what road testers say, bombing around in someone else's car.
If i dont have everything on like aircon, lights etc then about 48/58 depending on weather and roads. Best ive had was a 8 mile run and got 89 mpg. With everything on it still gets about 38mpg in and around town, which is decent. Its a 1.8litre petrol engine after all.
My last one had same size of engine and with everything on i got about 16/22 in and around town so big savings. Lovely motor to drive and be in.
in better weather i expect to be near 60 most of time
