Woodturning , 14" Yew bowl , my latest project

Hi , this is a WIP of my latest project , sorry some of the images have a red colour cast , its my halogen heater :doh:

14" dia x 3" thick blank , it is a few years old and has a crack running through it ( Stress from drying ) it also has a limb running through it .

Next is starting the waste removal and basic shaping

Next is the finnishing and sanding starting at 120 /180 / 240 / 320 / 400 grit papers
Sanding sealer applied the de nibbed with wood shavings , final coat of sanding sealer then Liberon woodwax buffed to a high gloss

There's a guy in Sheffield who does this kind of thing using some highly specialised woods like yew have right here. I have seen work he has done using woods such as Zebrano turned into stunning pieces. I'm not saying he makes a living out of it but he makes some serious money. Again, you may not want it to turn into a chore but that my friend is entirely up to you.

Bloody lovely job and something to certainly be proud of. Real skill.

A rule of thumb re drying time is 1 year per inch of thickness , on this blank that works out at 3 years

It's a sorry state of affairs the way we are bombarded by crap from China while artisans struggle to get a foot in the door. I suppose that's just the way of the world. Craft fairs may be a possible starting point, but I imagine that would be a lot of legwork for relatively small returns.

Never mind, I'm sensing that it's the joy of creating rather than the selling which drives you :)

And if you ever decide to sell that last one you made, I'll take it off your hands :D

Oh yes, I want it signed - when my great great grandson needs to raise funds to put my great granddaughter in a home this may mean the difference between a nice place by the sea and a kennel in the back yard.

That is some amazing work, especially item 5 (I call it that because I don't know what else to call it). I could use that to discipline the grandkids - behave, or the alien's head is coming out. Or I'd put it next to my valve amp - should keep the buggers away.

No 5 does look rather alien, never really thought about it like that. Those last two and the apple bowl are still here and not for sale. I always find it hard to sell stuff that I put such effort into. The woodturning saved my sanity after slipping three discs in my back. It was the only work I could do properly standing up!

You're absolutely right.

I've seen some beautiful wooden items at craft fairs and local markets, problem is
A. They're not cheap (and nor should they be considering the time, skill and materials)
B. I don't really need them.

I can't justify paying (as an example of something I recently saw at a local market) £50 for a beautiful but equally useless wooden box that will just sit on a table. Nor would I expect the craftsman that made it to sell it cheaper considering the time and skill that went into making it.

However, at reasonable prices, it's still possible to at least make some money, even if not a full income. Together with my wife's income from our rose nursery, it kept food on the table and paid the mortgage.

You're absolutely right, a beautiful piece of worked wood is absolutely art.
Trouble (for me, and I suspect many people) is that however much I appreciate it I can't justify spending the money on something I just look at. Maybe I'm just tight?

Not a question of being tight Gary, it's just the way things are these days. For many (most) of us, priority has to be given to purchasing things we actually need. But we all need a little something to bring some colour into our lives.

Anita has a fair old collection of little carved figures which do absolutely nothing (when we return home they are in exactly the same place as when we left the house) and so have no practical value. My hi fi and music collection have cost a fair bit over the years, and are certainly not essential to my continued survival, but the pleasure we derive from these 'non essentials' is priceless.

And now for the price of a new pair of work boots which will be Knackered in 12 months I can have a little something around which will give me a bit of pleasure each time I look at it, as it will hopefully for my daughter long after I've kicked the eminently practical (99p from B&Q) bucket.

Only thing is, I'll have to buy another for daughter no. 2 or there will be blood. :(

I was thinking that a proper nut bowl has a post in the center. I’m not really sure why? But that nut cracker is cool! With the ship’s wheel, I could go though a bowl full with that.

Beautiful work! Great attention to detail, heirloom quality! I know it is so satisfying when your work comes out so well, something to be proud of.

A friend of my father’s makes bowls, and sells them with this traveling fair, he rents a table, takes orders, and makes good side money mostly tax free. I’ve seen a few of his, and he glues blocks of different colored woods, and then makes bowls and some with lids, but his does not have the finish yours does, he leaves it at a mat finish.

My mother quilts, and she is an expert. But she will give them away as gifts rather than sell one. She says doing them for money takes the fun out of it. Those artistic types are so strange. ;)
