they need some work, couple of panels need fixing, maybe stands, maybe stack them with the pair mrdog has just bought.....!

Confusing photo. I thought you'd added some sort of tweeter array to them for a minute!

I thought so. They need work, at least two panels. I'll strip em completely rebuild them, new caps and clamps, new socks etc. Something for the winter, keep me busy.

Started stripping them today. 1st bass panel off one unit peppered with small arc holes. That'll need a new membrane fitting. A glue failure on one edge of the membrane allowed the membrane to go slack enough to touch the stator.

So far the other panels don't seem to have arcing holes in them but a lot of the panels have glue failure between the stators and the matrix. Hopefully these haven't yet caused the membranes to arc on those panels.

Best case, I need to have Misterdog redo one panel with a new membrane and we glue the others. Worst case all the panel with matrix/stator glue failure need redoing. That'll be a pain in the arse, 6 panels totally stripped, new membranes to fit, stretch, glue, coat, test- recoat etc.

Could be a long winter.

Still, only £200 and a shit load of learning.

That’s pretty minimal Simon - I’d be tempted to re-glue all stators and then test before anything else.

mrdog has reglued all the stators; we're enjoying mono quad as i type. The second speaker is in process, one membrane is loose so that needs a complete rebuild. Should be done soon then i do the electrics, input caps, clamps, power resistors etc.

I must admit I fancy another pair of Quads sometime, probably 63s on stands (just because they are narrower).

It must be 5+ years since my last pair. It's like malaria, or Alfa Romeos, a disease of the blood that comes back at random intervals.

A whole lot of quads. I'm sure that 63 was bigger than the laptop when we started.

Anyone who says you can't use quads with subs, tell them bollocks. Dipole main sub + 1 other sounds superb, perfect fill in.

What a great project! I enjoy such things to do, and enjoy the results when you get it right. If I were replacing one membrane, why not replace both? I’d be afraid they would sound different, one with a new membrane and one with old, but I guess you can find that out before you get that far? I can’t wait to see them finished, good luck with it!

Didn't Celestion develop a dipole sub for use with the '63s? Can't remember what it was called though.

There was an article in a HiFi World DIY supplement waaaay back, for a dipole sub which was to partner a pair of Celestion speakers (I thinkj). I have it somewhere as I made one just to see what a dipole sub was like. It wasn't bad. I might make another during the winter as I had forgotten about these.

"Interestingly, the Quad ESL-63 would be a potential alternative to the SL600 for use with the 6000 woofer (footnote 1). A pair of '63s were tested, and the Celestion's dipole bass matched that of the Quad very well, providing a powerfully clean low end, improved mid clarity, and allowing the Quad to play several dB louder on wide-band program. Moreover, the Quad '63 sounded good at the increased height conferred by the 6000 platform, resulting in a generously "tall" speaker effect".

You're thinking of the SL6000 system which was the dipole sub-woofer paired with the Celestion SL600 speaker. Noel Keywood of HiFi World found the Celestion sub-woofers matched well with his Quad 63s. I think he used a pair of sub-woofers, one under each Quad 63.

I have played around with using a sub-woofer (a KEF design) with my Quad 57s - I just couldn't get on with it: either it was too intrusive, or had no effect at all. But it was a floor firing device and not a dipole design like the Celestion.

It was the sub for the SL6000 system. Most seem to refer to it as just the 6000 dipole sub-woofer. Intended for use with the SL600 speakers. I've seen them, but don't actually recall hearing one. Supposed to be very effective and yes, I've heard of them being recommended for use with the Quads. Finding one for sale might be tricky.

That's mrdogs room, he has 989s and subs, the middle 63 is the only one playing, were just testing it after a repanel.

When repanelled if the resistivity and tension is the same they sound the same. The opposite speaker panel had been repaired previously, early glue failure

Just out of curiosity, what kind of glue are you using?

Going to collect this second one later tonight, then enjoy a weekend of new preamp and quads.

200 quid and a whiskey bribe, not a bad investment. That said mrdog must put 50 hours into them.

Ok, Now I have the measure of them, literally. I'm going to add some subs into the mix. I fancy on making some Gradient -a-like subs but with DSP on the plate amp. Nice little boxes, raise them up to a better listening height and fill in underneath.

I'll try and get some done tonight. I expect they'll be high around 50-60 hz, a couple of db low around 2k and rolled off at the top.

for comparison here's the Yams in room with 1/6th smoothing.

Sent pcb's off to China for fabrication for the EHT, I'll do replacement input/arc sense boards once I've completed the EHT build. Here's the build plan.

Remove the input RC and build an external 'widget' nice caps nowt fancy though. Replace the speaker sockets with nice functional parts that'll last, not cheap eBay numbers. Replace the EHT boards, replace the input/arc sense boards. FIT a 3 pin IEC and redo the internal earthing arrangement, it's currently on the speaker - which ain't a top idea with a bridged amp. Then redo the final shushing tweeter panel, just a little shush, ever so quiet, only now and again, but it sounds like a membrane failure in the making.

Then tidy them up, wash the cloths, bin the dust covers, strip and refinish the top plates to remove the wood grain and ta-da. Fun quads for a bit.
