I posted a thread a while back asking for advice on a budget turntable after a 20 year break from vinyl, I've taken the advice and am picking up a used Project Debut Carbon with Ortofon 5e cartridge on Wednesday
It's local so can check it out myself and transport it safely.
I'm quite excited lol

Yep, for sure its a slippery slope that can be frustrating, fun, enlightening, and many things in between....lol
The body shell is Westfield, the chassis is our own design as were many of the components, such as suspension, brakes cooling etc. Every nut, bolt, washer built by us.
AT Power fuel injected Zetec, blueprinted by me, 202 bhp @ 7600rpm. Weighs 600 kg.
Nice toy.

That's a decent PWR, must be great fun to drive, was the engine originally an ST170 unit?
Are you an engineer of some description? Design & fabrication of a chassis isn't for the faint hearted
Had a Project Debut Carbon with speed box.. was quite a decent tt. looked good too.
Forgive my ignorance but what is a speedbox?

nope, I dont think you need one. the deck works fine without imo. It will just add a bit of stability to speed but not needed to get a good sound...again imo. no idea what they cost as an extra; one i bought here 2nd hand just had one.

Garylooks different from the early westfields, I built mine in 1987, had a lotus twincam engine, sound better than the moderns but only 140hp.

Yeah, good noise the Lotus lump makes. Old motors sound really nice. TR6 and Cooper S being a couple of my favs. I could go all obscure and mention two stroke Saab's, Chevrolet Corvairs and Borgward Isabellas too :).

My Zetec on special cams, 4 barrel throttle bodies, and straight through 4 into 1 exhaust sounds very, very similar to the Lotus twin cam, which it should as the design is so similar.
I'll have to dig out a video I took as the car was on the dyno, at around 4k it just takes on a howl that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
Cause if your not a petrol head this leaves you cold.....lol.
My old SAAB 3 cylinder 2 stroke did sound special too, no engine braking either made driving different.
Strangely Citroen 2CV exhaust note appeals too.

Update: Unfortunately, despite the seller only being 20 miles away, due to my shift work the turntable had to be sent by courier.
Surprise surprise it arrived in kit form, the platter had come off and damaged the tone arm and the spindle had snapped off.
The seller has refunded me in full and doesn't want the broken deck back although I have suggested I take it back to her to re-sell as spares or repair.

Never ceases to amaze how some folk post tt's. And speakers for that matter
Get a Technics SL1200 or 1210.
You can put a better arm on it somewhere down the line and then you are into super-deck territory for not a lot of money.
Actually my real advice for getting into vinyl would be the same as I'd give to someone thinking of getting into drink and drugs. Don't do it! But if you are going to do it, do it properly. ;)

That's a shame. I've had the same experience.
A Technics has far more chance of surviving shipping than most decks though. The build quality is way above most of the tat that's out there masquerading as quality bits of kit. I've had 2 shipped to me with no problems at all.
Packed properly they usually do fine. Often 2 boxes are best tho.
My tips:
Remove platter, mummify in bubble wrap
If tonearm can't be removed and shipped separate lock it down then tape it to the armrest with strong tape not Sellotape.
Put lid down and tape with duct tape right around the lid and the base 10 lots should do. Go both ways, length and width
Tape wrapped platter to top of lid.
Mummify the whole thing in bubble wrap and then double box. Put sponge or failing that loads of crumpled newspaper between the boxes. If you do use paper use a lot - like a whole Sunday Times including all the supplements. (All most of it is good for anyway). Pack it in, that shit needs to be solid.
Don't use 'fragile' stickers - red rag to a bull.
Whilst I'm not blaming the seller, who doesn't appear to much about turntables, it wasn't very well packed. She did write "fragile this way up" on the box though :lol:

I have a Project Debut Carbon in Electric Blue ,I wanted to sell !!
It has the Ortofon red cart ,and has no more than 30 or 40 hrs on it . 2 yrs old and in minty condition really , I have all the packaging and having bought 2 TT,s by post and seen the mistakes and pitfalls , would be your man for posting!!??:)
I now alternate between 2 1978 vintage Aiwa AP 2200 TT's mainly because the interchangeable headshells are just something I like ,depending on which albums I play (I am a bit obsessed lol )
Let me know if it grabs you , and I,ll send a pic in the meantime .
