Currently using a Nagaoka mp200, and happiest I've been with my analogue listening. But while this cart is making Beefheart listenable, its still not there with more congested music such as Hendrix Axis bold as love LP, I find that a difficult one, may'be I should buy the cd? Does anyone else change carts to suit different genres? I have a spare headshell with a end of days Denon dl110 on it, would like to try something else, obviously something different to the superb mp200 I have just bought (and gotten meself a spare stylus for a 100 notes (Japan direct seller), where else can you buy a proper audiophile stylus for a £100!! I don't spend more than £300 on carts, waste of time when you can't be bothered with finger lifts, record weights an all dat bollox! What are Shure carts like? Are they rock n roll?

A used but decent Denon DL-103 plus a reasonable SUT or headamp? Might be doable on your budget and will boogie well enough. (the 103 sounds nothing like the 110 by the way)
Shure ? Yes pure rock n roll but no styli available so what's the point. You get what you pay for. For my money Goldring are the team to beat, the 1042 is an affordable gem. Others will have different recommendations.

Thought you could get new replacement styli for Hure, like Jico?

Thought you could get new replacement styli for Hure, like Jico?You are of course right. I should have said no original Shure styli. Since I have no experience of the Jico product I can't talk, but I have read that Jico's SAS styli were very good. They are no longer produced I believe?

I don't think it is the cartridge that is the problem. Pretty familiar with nags and that record, it should be playing it fine.
I just bought the CD version, so I'll know for sure when it arrives.

OOh no, mcs no good for me, I had a £400 AT once, it lasted 2 days.

But you have a DL-110.
Mike, I suspect you are in a similar situation to me where the sort of quality level of replay you are demanding from vinyl costs way above what you are prepared to spend in order to get it.
It's one thing to have a record player to spin the odd vinyl for the fun of it and another to get a vinyl system to the level where it can compete (in high fidelity terms) with a sorted digital set up.

But you have a DL-110.
That was only £180, nice carts, but the Nag beats it, and with replacement stylus's at £100 a pop, I know I keep saying that, before long the prices will double, then with Brexit and all that, best buy 5 more at least!

I play vinyl about 1-4 hours a day!! I spin the odd cd, I've always been under the assumption that vinyl sounded better, or rather I just prefer its more organic sound, but recently after buying cd versions of some of my vinyl lps - and with more on the way - I am very surprised at how good cd is. I am currently scouring Ebay for decent cd versions of my lp collection! Most of them cost under a fiver and I can always play them in the van as well!! I'm the happiest I've been with my TT at the minute, but will continue with the digital comparisons. What I'm trying to work out at the minute though is whether there is a cart that is more suited to the scratchier rock/punk stuff.
You can get quality needles for Shure (!). I have tried this one on my M 75 body with good results:

A Shure M75ED is a pretty forgiving cartridge for that sort of material. I don't know if they still sell new ones but you could by a used one and fit a new stylus, pretty sure you can still get replacement styli for them.

Very good - I have a Jico 'standard' stylus for each of my Shure cartridges (M75-6s and M55E) and they sound spiffing. As good as the NOS Shure originals I have anyway.
I am a big fan of Shure cartridges - Rock 'n' Roll indeed .......

I've only got the one arm, on me turntable of course. The Jelco 750 D.
Then a Shure such as we've been describing will be unlikely to perform optimally. One of their broadcast models might fit the bill?
