Hi Guys,

Please see message on Noticeboard: https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?61282-You-can-now-Contribute-to-Support-The-Art-of-Sound&p=1032554#post1032554

This is further to the thread started here about Pop-Up ads and voluntary donations: https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?60873-Adverts-embedded-in-posts&p=1031197#post1031197

Should you wish to support AoS and contribute towards the running costs of the site, you can now do so by clicking on the 'Contribute' tab, just to the right of the New Posts button at the top of the homepage, and be ad-free, without needing to use an ad-blocker!

Many thanks to all who have contributed so far, and all feedback is welcome:cool:

I'm happy to help out a bit what with the reduction in recent forum income.

Wow - look. I'm an official AOS Contributor.
Makes me proud. :hifive: :D

I'm a bit confused as to whether the amounts shown in the drop-down menu are say, monthly amounts. annual, or one-off payments. A contributor may for instance be happy to pay £5 per month but are not able to stump up £60 in one go for a year's worth. Is it possible here to make monthly payments by standing order/direct debit? Am I overthinking this?

All contributions are one-off payments, unfortunately the system we use doesn't handle ongoing subscriptions, but the thought is very kind!

Hi Nick,

A one-off payment will undoubtedly help in the short term, but surely that money will run out at some point. Perhaps a repeated post when that point approaches will ensure continued 'solvency'. :) Again, apologies if I'm making things look unnecessarily complicated.

How long does my coveted AOS Contributor badge last?

Will I be shown up as a cheapskate after 6 months by the disappearance of the coveted badge if I don't deliver another dollop of £mullah? :o

These things matter, you know!

Btw folks, just in case any of you were wondering, we're not unique in activating a Donations tab, for this purpose. pfm have been operating a similar system for some time, which you'll see if you're a logged-in member at the top of the forum's homepage: https://pinkfishmedia.net/forum/

Note the 'Donations' tab, next to the Members list tab. And I'm pretty sure the Wam have been doing it for years, with their 'Founding Member' thing. I think it's a nice chance to put something back into the community, and show you care, especially those of you who advertise regularly on the site, for free, lol!:D;)

May I ask what where the contribution money goes?

Isn't AoS built on free software?, yes there will be annual costs to keep the forum running and the domain name, but I can't see them being too high.

Also, you have moderators, but I assume that they are not paid for their efforts?

Additionally, if someone was to contribute, does that automatically give them a right to dictate or question the running of the forum, or would they be expected to be a silent partner?

It would be good to have a breakdown of where my money would be going if I chose to invest, especially as you already have ads, traders and now members contributing.

I'm no expert but I think that although the software itself may be free there are significant hosting costs involved?

I don't know about this forum but Moderators are usually volunteers (thanks for their efforts)

EDIT A quick google search suggests between 10 and 1000 USD per month depending on size and bandwidth

no-one is twisting your arm, and no, you dont get any privileges bar what was stated. Its quite expensive to run this forum, and thats why it was introduced.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your feedback. Let's take your questions individually:

May I ask what where the contribution money goes?

Into a Paypal account. The funds accrued will be put towards the running costs of the site (as outlined below).

Isn't AoS built on free software?, yes there will be annual costs to keep the forum running and the domain name, but I can't see them being too high.

No, unfortunately not. The site runs on Vbulletin software (currently Version 4.2.3), the cost of which is paid for annually. You may not see the costs being too high, but I can assure you that they are significant (and rising all time), as the site grows and therefore requires more maintenance, due to increased bandwidth.

The biggest payment is to the company we use for maintaining the database (via our dedicated server) and the technicians who carry out the necessary work, which is on-going. Also, when the site is offline, due to a fault (as has occurred a few times recently), the technical support required to fix the issue is payable at an hourly rate + initial investigation fee. Therefore, the longer it takes to fix the problem, the more it costs!;)

Also, you have moderators, but I assume that they are not paid for their efforts?

Nope. They do it for the love of it, bless 'em!:eyebrows:

Additionally, if someone was to contribute, does that automatically give them a right to dictate or question the running of the forum, or would they be expected to be a silent partner?

ALL members are free to offer their input/praise/constructive criticism at any time, hence the existence of 'Critic's Corner' (or here) - and that applies whether they've made a donation or not. Also, no favouritism will be shown to those who donate. Members will always be treated equally, whether they help support the site financially or not, based on the quality of their contributions.

It would be good to have a breakdown of where my money would be going, especially as you already have ads, traders and now members contributing.

Sorry, that's not going to happen. I've already outlined where the money goes. You're not buying shares in ownership of the site, which would entitle you to such information. Quite simply, there is no onus on anyone to make a donation. It's completely voluntary. No-one will be thought of any worse for not doing so.

However, should you choose to donate, then it's done on the basis of simply acting a small 'thank you' for providing the forum, including a highly active classifieds section with which to advertise and/or buy equipment. This area is currently free to all registered members, unlike many other forums of similar size, who charge their members for the privilege, and also place various restrictions upon their ability to gain access to that area of the site (minimum post quotas and so on).

Most large forums, not just hi-fi-related ones, have ads and traders contributing to costs. This is certainly true of both pfm and Wigwam, both of which have also been operating a membership Donations system for some time. Therefore, AoS is now simply being brought into line with those. Indeed, it is something that has been mentioned before and suggested by members (not us), so implementing it now seemed as good a time as any.

Hope this helps answer your questions:cool:

.

Yeah I wish. The only thing the moderators get is grief.

There's now a huge amount of traffic on this forum consequently the running costs are a lot higher than for some other hi-fi forums you may be familiar with. Wigwam and PFM both have the same issue and consequently both solicit contributions (and have a lot of ads in the case of wigwam). The alternative is to have adverts plastered all over the place like some of the yank forums and nobody wants that.

Thanks for all of the varied responses.

I do however take exception to my note being described as either a wind up or f***ing rude. The only thing rude was those statements.

Whilst I am no longer a prolific poster on this forum, due to both personal circumstances, I now have a 1 year old son who takes priority, and I favor another forum, i do keep an eye on this forum and as I do a number of others.

I felt I was well within my right as a member of this forum to request the information that I have and am content with some of the responses.

Because I am entirely unclear where the money I could invest would be going, I am afraid I won't contribute, but I do wish the forum well and will continue to look in from time to time.

Playing devils advocate Paul and maybe you didn't intend it to, but your questioning seemed a tad ungracious and confrontational. Totally correct to ask yes, but perhaps it could have been worded a little more tactfully, hence some of the responses you received. I raised an eyebrow myself to be honest.

It's voluntary, do it or don't do it, up to you and as Martin says it's not an investment. I donate to Wikipedia every-year, I don't know exactly where that money goes, but one has to have a little trust if we want these services to continue ;)

As for the first bit, I entirely agree and hope that you found my response, in that respect, satisfactory. Members are of course entitled to, within reason, offer their opinions on your input.

In terms of the last bit, that's entirely your decision. However, I'm at a loss as to how I could've been any clearer where your donation would be going, short of providing bank statements?:hmm:

The main cost involves paying the company concerned to maintain our database, which is on-going and increasing, as the forum grows in size, and especially when faults occur. The rest goes on paying VBulletin for the software used to run the forum. And anything left over is reinvested in the site at a later stage, or when unexpected costs arise, and also to fund future VB upgrades.

Therefore, in terms of any lack of clarity, I think you're being somewhat unreasonable. Plus, as Martin has mentioned, I think you're also struggling to differentiate between an investment and a donation.

Furthermore, as others have said, chipping in a fiver or tenner as thanks for the 'entertainment' alone that this place provides, and which is appreciated by regulars, is considered as being good value. That's another valid way of looking at donations, other than simply representing funds received towards the site's running costs, and in which case don't need justifying.

Anyway, you've made your decision, which of course I respect:)

Thanks Marco. I guess my point was that whilst I know it is not cheap to run a forum, it is equally not terribly expensive dependent on what software/technical support you chose to use, and as you already have adds and dealer contributions, I struggle to understand what the extra money is required for. Equally, I don't run the forum, and don't know the finer details so am happy to step out of the conversation.

I'm fine with contributing; I suppose it would be helpful to understand what sort of order of magnitude the costs of running the forum, ie £1k, £10k or whatever. Certainly it would be rude to ask for a breakdown and I'm sure it would open a can of worms as someone would challenge it. I only suggest some form of wide range is given for the costs as this might help contributors decide how much to contribute.

No problem, but surely you must accept that if additional funding weren't required, I wouldn't have the need to address it? As Tim has said, there has to exist a level of trust.

The software/technical support we employ isn't cheap because we pay for dedicated personnel to manage our database, 24/7. Therefore, should the site go down, due to a fault or some other unforeseen issue (which has happened three times this year so far, the additional costs of resolving which weren't budgeted for), then no matter what time it is, we can raise a ticket and get it fixed, ASAP!:)

In that respect, we're very happy with the service we receive (indeed I expect certain standards here, in order to maintain sustained availability of the forum for members, with minimal downtime), so have no desire to downgrade to something cheaper, but in that respect, worse.

The ads at their current level of visibility just about make up the shortfall in income from Skimlinks, so that issue is fortunately now almost resolved, but of course any income generated from such cannot be *guaranteed*, unfortunately in the same way as our costs!

Some days there is next to no income produced, depending on the number of clicks on said ads, which is how that income is generated, and other days it's better. However, I need to ensure that there is sufficient cleared funds available every month, in order to pay the site's running costs (and anything unexpected that crops up), to prevent me from being too much out of pocket at any given time (we'll get to that in a minute).

...which brings us neatly onto dealer contributions. These cannot be guaranteed either, because dealers come and go, and many after paying for their first year, fail to renew again (for various reasons), and of course that also presumes you can get the money off those who do, when it's due:rolleyes: That's another story, though!

There has also been a general downturn in the number of members of the trade joining the forum to advertise, therefore combined with the above, as already explained, is also another reason for the shortfall in income we've experienced recently.

Plus, there is also the question of cash flow. It's often the case that bills need to be paid before the necessary funds have arrived, and that applies especially to those from trade fees, as you can only ask someone to pay to renew their account, when their old one has expired...

Therefore, it comes down to timing, and if bills arrive when no-one, or few traders are due to renew their accounts, then I can be left out of pocket for weeks, sometime months, until someone renews and I'm reimbursed. The bills, however, still have to be paid in the meantime, regardless!

Lastly, as I've already stated, I'm *very focused* on AoS being entirely self-funding, and so will do whatever is necessary to enure that happens. Anyway, these are things no-one thinks about, or would know, unless you've run a forum such as this, but whilst we're at it, I thought it would be of interest to everyone, not just you, to outline them

I know where you're coming from, but I'm unhappy placing any onus (or pressure) on members like that, by basing their contributions on the forum's running costs, which I also reserve the right to remain private.

Therefore, any donations made should simply represent what someone is willing to give, based on their own judgement criteria. In that respect, any amount donated is very gratefully received, including your own, so thanks for that and I hope you continue enjoying the forum.

We'll certainly continue trying to make it a fun place to hang out:cool:

You were ASKED for an ENTIRELY VOLUNTARY DONATION and decided to interrogate the site owner over where the money would be going and don't think that's rude? If I were Marco I would have been quite offended by this as it was indirectly questioning his integrity.

As for your "right" as a forum member? What "right" is that exactly? You don't even have a right to use the forum never mind ask about its financial running, this forum is a free service kindly provided for people to use, if it were a club of which you were a paying member that would be different.

Do you question poppy sellers as to where that money goes too?

Hi everyone.
There are some less than fortunate people watching and posting on AOS.
I'm one if those unfortunately, however for the price of one crap hifi magazine ( my opinion) which your spewed lots of crap and cant reply to, you can be on a very valuable site and get help and information.
You also get to give input and feel like your part of a community.
This donation thing, free from adverts gets a HUGE thumbs up from me

Lets put it into context, for the price of 2 bottles of beer you have 12 month of entertainment, plus technical advice.

Good or what

We really do need more clarity here - are we talking Stella or Guinness? And what size bottles?

Thanks Marco. I guess my point was that whilst I know it is not cheap to run a forum, it is equally not terribly expensive dependent on what software/technical support you chose to use, and as you already have adds and dealer contributions, I struggle to understand what the extra money is required for. Equally, I don't run the forum, and don't know the finer details so am happy to step out of the conversation.

Yes, but there is no membership fee or onus on anyone to donate funds, so it is free by default. It only becomes otherwise if *you* choose so. I still don't think you've quite grasped the difference between a no-obligation donation, and an obligatory charge, or indeed an investment.

This is where we disagree clearly, Marco. The minute someone donates, the site is no longer free to them because they have paid a fee for it, whatever the amount happens to be, and whether it was a donation or a charge.

No we don't, as the bit in bold is sort-of fact, although you're still struggling with the concept of a donation. However, the key is in the words "to them". It doesn't make AoS as a forum in general not free. Simples!:)

Hi Marco, yes understood, I'm just saying it's not a great analogy as a charity like the Royal British Legion has to be entirely transparent about the money they raise and where it is spent, so when you donate by buying your poppy, you know exactly where the money is going. You can download their Annual Report to see their accounts in detail. There is of course no obligation on your part to have your accounts made public and scrutinized in the same way, so yes it's a trust based issue as you say ... :)

Mmm, been giving this some thought. The one thing that i have always liked about AOS is the sense of community. When the word cotribution has been mentioned in the past it has been and is a safe assumption that it is the contribution of people here of their enthusiasm, wit, knowledge and passion. As someone who runs a website though admittedly not a forum i fund it from my own coffers giving me control of content and artistic content. I know of the commercial advantages of advertising etc but i would see that anyone contributing to the running cost would then be part of a co-op and have a say in the appearance of the site etc. I do realize that the request for contributions are just that though when ever money comes into the equation conflict and/or sensitivity raise their heads. I would dislike very much to see what happened to another Hi-Fi site happen here where corporate interest in a quest for site funding takes president over over the spirit of the forum. If the site needs an annual fee why not publish the outgoings on open forum and spread the cost equally across the forum membership? This would take the vagary out of who is contributing what and how much they are valued more than others. There would then be no need for badges as we would all be equal again.

Steve - fact is the site costs a significant amount to run and although we could move it onto the various crappy free hosting sites we don't want to. Why would we want to downgrade for the sake of a few people chipping in a few quid each year? Trade revenue is less than it was and due to changes in the law so is advertising revenue. So the site cannot support itself unless the trade fee is jacked up or we have a shitload more advertising and sponsoring.

I think pretty much everyone here would rather chuck a couple of quid in the kitty once a year than take that option.

if someone does not want to contribute or cannot afford to contribute then they do not have to and they still get to use the site and all of the benefits. I have no problem with people not contributing, that's up to them. I'm not interested in why they don't want to. That's their business. I don't care. If not enough people contributed then I guess Marco and I and maybe the other mods would just pay the lot out our own pockets and keep the site going regardless.

But the fact is that the support for the contribution system has been overwhelming which I'm really pleased to see as it's a great indicator of how much people value the site and the community that we have here.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply, mate. From your lack of response so far, I was beginning to think we'd fallen out...;)

In some ways I can see where you're coming from, and of course value your opinion. You're right about the contribution factor, in terms of the most important part of that representing the information, experience and knowledge contributed by the membership, which I'm sure will continue whether folks choose to make a small monetary donation to our running costs or not.

As Macca says, the forum has (ever-increasing, as it grows) costs to fund, which as I explained were being covered up until recent changes, which resulted in a drastic reduction in revenue, and in turn required us to take the action we did, mainly in terms of increasing the ad content from Google, but also by introducing the donation system, which let's not forget quite a few folks here had actually asked for, without being prompted, simply because, as has been seen by many of the responses here, *members themselves* wanted to contribute something.

The important thing to remember here is that, and I assure you of this most categorically, whether anyone contributes funds or not, it will not make one jot of difference in our eyes to how they are treated, or their 'status' or whatever, nor will it result in those who've donated being shown any preferential treatment. We are very focussed on that, and simply will not allow the existence of any such division.

As I've said, donations are entirely voluntary, and indeed as Macca has said, no-one has to justify or explain why they haven't made a donation. People will have their own reasons, and that's something we fully respect. Therefore, donate or not - it's entirely up to YOU! And in that respect, in terms your 'status' here, nothing will have changed:)

By the same token, we also ask members to show the same respect (and trust) in us to invest the funds donated wisely, in the best interests of the forum, and in terms of what will ensure its continued success and longevity. As for the running costs being spread among the membership, that's not something I'd be happy with, as some folks might feel more obliged or pressurised then to contribute, perhaps through concern for the forum's future otherwise.

Like Macca said, that's not something anyone here should be concerned with. Should it ever become necessary (which I sincerely doubt), that the forum can't support itself financially, then the running costs will be covered in full by myself and/or if any of the mods decided to help out. However, as they already freely give so much of their time to assist in the running of the forum, they would be under absolutely no obligation to do so.

As for badges, let me reiterate and make it crystal clear: the 'AoS Supporter' badges are currently automatically awarded to all who have donated, *BUT* they aren't mandatory, and so if anyone wishes to donate, but remain anonymous, or at some point no longer wants their badge, then simply advise me via PM, and your wish will be granted!

Anyway, regardless of donations, let's all continue to ensure that AoS retains the relaxed, friendly and informative vibe it's renowned for, which of course as has been said already, is founded upon your posting contributions, and the time and effort you guys put in to make this place what it is, and also what we'll ensure that it continues to be in future:cool:

So if the response is overwhelming then you must have enough cash to keep it going for a few years?

Decades. Centuries in fact. Not only that but members will be pleased to hear that construction of the volcano lair is underway and the big rocket that swallows smaller rockets will now move on from the blueprint stage.

apologies if I missed it but did we ever discuss what the significant amount it costs to run actually is? never run a website so no idea how much we are actually talking about?

Hi Jim,

We always aim to secure sufficient working capital (to borrow a term from the business world) to cover the running costs for the existing year, plus one year in advance. In terms of the latter, we're not quite there yet, but that's not important, as I'm confident that will be covered in due course by income from Google adverts.

We also budget to cover any eventualities, such as unexpected costs that may arise from repairing the database, in the event of faults and any downtime that occurs from such (which has happened three times already this year, the costs of which fell outside of forecasted expenditure), plus also for any software upgrades from VBulletin.

You can't only think about the 'here and now'... The goal is always to future-proof the forum, as far as possible!:)

Marco.

Hi Mark,

Nope, and that's the way it will remain, as it's no-one else's concern but mine. If anyone thinks that in order to contribute, they're entitled to that information, then I would politely ask them to keep their cash. Any donations should be made purely on the basis of goodwill and the desire to support the forum, nothing else. No extra entitlement should be sought, or indeed will be given.

However, I will state that out with of recent donations, the running costs are significantly more than revenue currently generated, due to the recent loss of income from Skimlinks and also trade member contributions. However, we're hopeful that in due course that situation will be rectified.

Good to know. Can we ensure that all equipment operations (crater doors, radar dish etc.) can only be carried out via oversized push buttons with corresponding coloured indication lamps mounted in heavy duty metal console panels within the control room? No PC mouse clicks please. Also each button press MUST be accompanied by an electronic chirping or whirring noise as suits the function. Thank you.

Of course. You'll think you are right back in 1973. Ingram 'Model 10' submachineguns, brightly coloured hard hats and overalls will be issued at the next AoS meet.

(Note: You will be invoiced separately for your uniform and machine gun).

Hi folks,

If you were unaware of us recently being hacked, via an 'SQL Injection', then please see where this matter has been discussed: https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?66631-Hacked&p=1138354#post1138354

The company we've used to install the Firewall are experts in their field, so we're confident that its installation will be effective in preventing such a situation from reoccurring.

Basically, it puts a layer of protection between our site and any hackers, and looks out for hackers trying to break into the site and stops them. In particular it stops hackers trying to exploit known vulnerabilities in websites, which in turn could compromise your stored personal data, if your passwords here are not strong enough, as that's often their way in!

Therefore, I'd like to take this opportunity to ask you all to strengthen your passwords and/or change them completely, in order to make it harder for hackers to infiltrate the site and compromise yours (and our) data.

As mentioned, we've had to pay (a significant sum), which is over and above our projected annual running costs, in order to employ the services of the company in question, therefore if any of you are able to make a donation to those costs, however small, and help protect both you and the site in future, it will be very gratefully received.

To do so, please click the 'Contribute' tab, at the top of the homepage, and follow the subsequent instructions. Many thanks!

Once again folks, thanks for your contributions, which have been much appreciated, in order to help offset the ever-growing costs of running the site.

Later this month, the annual site hosting fee (maintenance of the server, etc) is due for renewal, at the cost of £440, so anything you can afford to chip in would be very gratefully received! Many thanks:cool:
