A BK XLS200 here, coupled with Spendor S3/5r2’s, it’s a 10 inch woofer, sealed cabinet, it’s a very welcome addition :thumbsup:

That was a little disappointing. I thought the thread was going to be as titled, about 'big woofers' and I was hoping to see some whopping 18" or 22" drivers in use, but it turned out to be about subs. Never mind. :)

A sub is great for fims / TV not so good for music unless you have 2.
I used a Kef xq60b until i got new speakers.

I don’t think that’s entirely true as I exclusively use mine for music and only have one sub. However, I would add a number of caveats. 1/ I don’t think small subs work very well for music (my Rel is huge and doesn’t blend in at all with domestic decor). 2/ they have to be active, not passive. 3/ you can’t cross over at too high a frequency. It’s tempting to link subs to small speakers but I think that rarely works seamlessly. These days I have main speakers with 12” woofers and my sub is set to its lowest crossover frequency and its lowest output level. 4/ you can’t put a sub in the corner if you want it to sound good with music.

I can agree with all your points. I’m not using subs now, but have in the past. If you’ve got some mini monitors with 6” woofers, a huge 15” subwoofer will not mesh well. A 10” will work much better, you want the lowest of the top speakers to blend with the highest from the bottom, if there’s a large gap to cover there will be a noticeable separation.

Placing a sub in the corner, which makes sense visually, doesn’t work out acoustically. Especially if you’ve only got one, it should be placed in the center, with space from the back wall. One of the biggest issues with bass, in general, is reflections. Too close to any given surface will cause boominess. Many are designed to use the early floor reflection, which greatly depends on your floor now doesn’t it? If you’ve got hard wood, or carpet, or cement, all will sound vastly different. For best bass, plan on a lot of trial and error. But once you get it right its well worth the effort! Once you’ve lived with good bass, bass shy systems don’t cut it.

Still have a Leema, had one before and regretted selling it. Use it in the office but have on occasion used it in the listening room with lowthers and small stand mounts. In a small space it doesn't matter where it's placed, just as well as there isn't much choice. I see subwoofers as underpinning the bass and not overpowering.

I use two 15" Paradigm subs with my mini monitors. Works extremely well, as they have been designed to work together. Subs are sealed and servo controlled with inaudible distortion, even when driven to very loud levels! They are very good for music, being super fast and having great tone and definition. I wouldn't be without them!

Funnily enough I have just been tinkering with it again , after its sat idle for a few months !!

Its in the corner of the room that has a wooden solid block floor , and I prefer to use it when I am on a Sunday afternoon (when the wife is at her mothers and my son isnt upstairs ) but I am a bugger for leaving it on when I go into the manpit of an evening.
I can sometimes put the headphones on but leave the sub on too :rolleyes:

I have a pair of Tannoy 635's that tend to be less bassey than other bigger models , and its nice for a change :eek:

I still fancy a pair of Hartley Concertmasters with their 24” woofers! :)

I still have my sub which, until recently, was in use in the lounge for A/V duties only, but which is now no longer needed. It will be going upstairs to the man cave once I, firstly, clear the room out and, secondly, gird my loins to carry the thing up there.

It’s a lovely thing and works a treat with music so it’s definitely not going anywhere.

Yes Russell they are!! Simply amazing in my view. It was always my intention to add the servo 15's to my active 20's and it took me a good few years to get a pair but i'm nothing but persistent when i have a plan in my head :D

To buy 2 new subs at equal or better quality, i would need to spend a good few thousand imo.

Baffles me that Paradigm doesn't get mentioned over here that much, as they make incredible products, which are well thought out. They make and build pretty much everything in-house and their products offer ridiculous vfm.

I brought a pair of the original Paradigm Titans back from the States with me back in the early 90’s. They surprised quite a few dealers when I used them to audition amplifiers over here. Great vfm as stated.
