Just wondering if any suggestions for top sounding
ECC82 valves for my pre.
I have JJs in at the moment and they sound very good, very quiet too.
There was a suggestion that the circuit used saw a better performance when Gold Lions were used.
So duly ordered from HotRox but they are noisy, very! The sound improved quite a bit actually but as I say too noisy to leave in. I have sent back and the replacements were even noisier! Looks like it could be a battle for a refund...

So looking for suggestions of alternatives to the JJs and the Gold Lions (although may try a different supplier for the Gold Lions).
I require x2

Any suggestions on top sounding ECC82s?
Or maybe someone has x2 Gold Lion ECC82s I could loan to see if this was just bad luck on a bad batch..?!

It’s all a matter of taste really and am quite surprised the Gold Lions are noisy.

Anyway, I’ve tried a few in my Mcintosh and for me the best thus far are the Psvane 12AU7-T-MII/2 (for me... wonderful)

The other recommendation would be from Watford ECC82/CV4003/M8136-Mullard (a tad expensive) or the Phillips ECC82/5814A-Phillips Cryo. ECG JAN

Both are as good as the Psvane but as I say it’s a matter of personal taste.

Others may have a different view.

I find it very hard to get along with most new issue signal tubes. Vintage ECC186/7136 valvo/amperex/mullard are to my ears the best, if expensive...Others I love are siemens & halske E82CC 1960s, great throughout tonal range and very dynamic... I've got good few different types if you're interested

I think I chucked all my ECC82s in with a Croft pre I sold, let me have a rummage in case...

Hi sorry to hear that.
how were the valves noisy?
Hiss all the time or pops and crackles.

They have a low rumble flutter noise and one channel sounds like a very low tiny trombone noise!!
And the odd crackle too

So no chance, there is a fault with the circuit.

Other valves are fine on the amp, JJs are silent and work fine.
I’m of the understanding of one set of valves are silent and work fine then irrespective of make other good reading valves should also work ?!

In my short stint with valves, I have had some valves/equipment with quirks.
Valves that work correctly in one circuit but not in another.
Valves of the same spec should be interchangeable.

I have some vintage ecc88s that are not happy at all in my power amp but are fine in my pre amp.
Hope you get it sorted.

I have had pretty good results from Brimar both 82 and CV versions.
Gold pin versions are good.
Trouble with valves it's suck it and see. Can be heavy on the wallet but now you;ve sold your WAD 300b..............................

I could lend you some Mullard ECC82s which have been tested on my AVO valve tester. How many do you need? PM me if interested.

I don't think all the reissues are lacking.
The Genulex Gold Lions and Tung Sol may be a good place to start.
Re issues have improved, at least some have.
