Things have been a bit tight financially this last couple of months, so this Christmas, more than usual will be my chance to acquire music I haven't got around to buying.
On my list so far are:
Blue Rose Code "The Water of Leith" recommended by Geoff (Oldius) and a very nice listen. Looking forward to this.
Beatles "Rubber Soul" - bringing me closer to having all their albums.
Orbital "Monsters Exist".
Stanley Clarke "Up". I keep buying this, taking it to play for someone and end up giving it away, then buying it again.
Pink Floyd "Animals". Not had this since the seventies, forgotten what it's like.
David Byrne "American Utopia".
Anyone else using Christmas to binge-buy music? And what did you ask Santa for while sat on his lap? (Just in case my list is fulfilled and I need some more pointers).
Getting a synology nas from the boy ... will migrate my music files etc there. Gonna set it up with a couple of older drives first to get it working then probably put it away(ha, maybe)...Music wise, well its all on Tidal

Ah yes, you're mostly into the streaming these days...
Maybe next year, when I may be ready to take on yet another Direct Debit. At the moment my Echo Dot is taking care of streaming, although it may be a bit naff. When I'm ready to do it properly I'll be consulting your good self. :)
I'm expecting a watchwinder amongst other things.
I'm continuing the process of duplicating my vinyl collection on CD. Need quite a few Pat Metheney albums, and all the Robert Plant solo albums (up to 'Manic Nirvana' not interested in the folky stuff he's done since). Could do with getting 'Animals' as well now you've mentioned it. One of my favourite Floyd albums that is, and my vinyl copy is not in the first flush of youth, although it is still playable.

I quite like Pat Metheney, have "Still Life (Talking)" and "First Circle", and one he did with a Polish bird called Anna Maria Jopek. Can't understand a word she says, but she sounds good singing it. If you're needing a CD copy of "Raising Sand" (Robert Plant and Alison Krauss), you're welcome to my copy FOC, I'm not keen on it.

Cancel that nas.. heap of crap, and going back. wont connect up to win10 pc. wont connect to the mobile app... connects to my network but only shows as aanother device. cant add music or play anything,...pointless
That's unusual Grant, never personally had any problem with Synology gear, but computers and networks can be a right pain.

yup, it set up but it wouldnt allow me to map it.. diagnostics say pc is fine and it was the nas that was blocking. i tried numerous times in different ways. im not an expert in this but its supposed to be relatively plug n play to a point. im not a novice and it wasnt gonna play ball with someone like me.
a few looks on interweb says a few folk have had issues and synology are not doing anything to improve it. im disappointed but whats to be done... it is going back and already re packed.
Oh well, darned computers. What present you going to have now then?

Coal is getting expensive these days. I just give out xmas cards with a picture of a piece of coal.

I can't be doing with all that faff - I just send text messages with the word "coal". I use caps if they're family or close friends.

just as well i did. electronics need checked and set up in advance. thats the end of my nas adventures.. not going through that bollocks again. ive had free programs that work better
Just as a matter of interest Grant, how comfortable are you with networks and setting up permissions on a network. This is often the problem with getting devices to talk to each other on a network?
Synology NAS boxes are pretty much plug and play, as long as you follow all the protocols.

I am probably not great, but everything else i have can talk to each other. my jriver or audirvana can talk to both my rpi's, and my oppo. and both my win10 pcs can talk to each other. Ive got a few vpn's i can introduce to networks if i want and can even take music off my pc from my phone when out via data. Win10 has made life difficult theres no doubt but ive usually been able to get round it.
I get the feeling synology have just decided not to rewrite the software to get round win10 and just expect users to be geeky re networks.. im deffo not lol
Oh well, at least you tried it out. Networking can be tricky at times , I had trouble mapping drives from my Music Server on another Win10 PC on the network, which dropped off following a Windows update. Took me hours and hours to solve it.
Drove me crazy!

I bet someone like you who knows their onions may well get it working fine. Alas I dont, but it was supposed to be easy for beginners, and im a bit better than that and failed. Soul destroying these things.. its a shame as programs etc can be made to work easily which suggests they just expect a certain level of competence.:rolleyes:

Most everything has an embedded HTTP page - you should be able to track down the NAS IP address on your router by looking at connected devices, or you could try using a network sniffer app.
Once found, reserve the IP address on the router, and go into NAS admin and make it a static address.
No unpleasant bending!

Has that ok. Had the web up connected to it ok. It was mapping it that was one of the issues. Also when I used the drop function it dropped it but didn't upload actual music just file names. iPhone app wouldn't connect either.
Just way to many issues for me to overcome

Could be a permissions issue in the NAS admin page.
