His suggestion that the reason they run slightly fast is deliberate is interesting. Would make it sound a bit more lively, more PRAT.

I thought the experiment was interesting hence sharing it for debate. The obvious thing for me was that many replace the plastic with alloy. If made to the same dimensions then logically the speed will be the same. But many report improvements!

I saw somewhere-perhaps even this site, that someone had measured (using some specialized tool) the "roundness" of several standard plastic Rega sub-platters and found them all to be significantly out of round-some more than others. If this is indeed the case, then a truly round sub-platter would offer better pitch stability and therefore a better overall listening experience

Yes agree that makes sense. I guess it's a moulded part but you'd think the QA process would check to ensure they are perfectly round. Knowing this, if I was to try an alloy sub-platter I think I'd retest with a strobe!

It's a budget deck though, there's only so much they can do in engineering terms and still make a profit. Personally I've never understood the attraction of budget belt drive turntables.

I think that the original platters are thermoplastic or glass filled thermoplastic? I believe that there is some shrinkage inherent in the manufacturing process and the final part will differ slightly from the tooling it is cast in. Only microns but possibly enough to cause some very minor issues.

You glottal love the way he tries to blaim the mains voltage and frequency when it's clearly the cheap crap Rega turntable, if it runs too fast it probably won't run at a steady speed either. Buy a decent direct drive
