Like that here too last night.

I'm not big on constellation names, but looking south-ish there was a tiny and faint cluster of about 6 or 7 stars. Strangely I could only just see them when looking directly at them, but they were much more visible when I looked slightly away from them. Not sure if that's normal or if my peepers are going dodgy.

Maybe, but this cluster is TINY. And faint (although they would undoubtedly be clearer if I wasn't viewing form a town). Lots of light pollution.

When I moved in here 20 years ago you could see hundreds of stars on a clear night, only 2 crappy streetlights and one or the other was always broken. Now even though it's just a back street it's lit like the Las Vegas Strip. If you walk down the road a quarter mile to the posh area you can see a bit more. Saw Mars once.

Many, many years ago, 35 years or more, I was on vacation in Colorado, and camped on the top of a mountain at about 12,000’! Yes the air was thin, but I will never forget the sky that night.

It looked as though the stars were stacked up, some looked closer, others farther away, and you could look forever to see the one farthest away, but there were always more. The only time I’ve ever seen the colors of stars, and the only time I’ve ever seen green stars. Yellow, red and blue are quite common, occasionally purple and green. Andromeda Galaxy was easily found, and I saw a wisp that I believe was the Pinwheel Galaxy, rarely seen with the naked eye. It’s easy to see why they put telescopes on mountain tops! Where I live now the light pollution is severe, only the very brightest stars are visible. If I ever get back to the Rockies, a night on the mountain top will be on my list of things to do.

My niece is vacationing in Greenland as I type, she sent pictures of the Northern Lights, just beautiful! I’ll see if I can dig up the pic.

The Northern Lights have been very high up my bucket list for sometime, in fact it's the only thing left I feel I really have to see before I die! I'd love to see some pictures Russell?

The most amazing sky I've ever seen was in the Atacama Desert at the Observatory, as they let tourists go up there - breathtaking and humbling.

Not my picture by the way, but it's like this most of the time. I would love to go again, but very unlikely. I've never seen anything quite like a Chilean night sky ;)

When you see a clear night sky it's no mystery why the Stars have held such fascination for the ancients and right up to modern times. Unfortunately that sight is a rarity for many of us now.

We used to have fantastic views of the Milky Way when it was a clear night in France, as we were quite rural.
When you have seen it in all its glory it sticks in your mind.

Some of the most beautiful skies I have seen have been down in the Florida Keys at night. Very little land mass and light pollution, background of nothing but ocean, those stars look so bright and close, like you could reach out with your hand and pluck them right out of the sky one by one. I love it down there.

Oooh, how did I miss this!

I’ve been missing the relatively clear skies of my old Suffolk village home for nearly two years now.

Wasn’t dark skies by any means but the lack of street lighting meant you could at least get a glimmer of the wonders out there.

I used to set up in the back garden and watch the night sky emerge as the houselights went off one by one.
