Helping A Friend Out - Any help with pricing these please as a job lot?

Hi,
As the title suggests, a friend of mine, whose Father has a lot of stuff requires sale of these items.

I suggested prices based on eBay completed listings but they would rather sell the lot in one go!

Can anybody help with this, just to give a ball park figure as I believe some of this gear is fairly desirable? Alternatively suggest a dealer who would offer a fair price, not E******m as they have asked me not to contact them, personal reasons I believe.

There are 3 items without photos as these items are in the friends house, rather than his Father's house where I took them.

All items are loved and used; certainly they have signs of use and some marks here & there and probably could do with a service but have been handled by a Gentleman who cherishes Hi-Fi.

I was told that all items were working as they should at the time they were shelved, some a couple of years ago, others longer.

I would say about three grands worth there Ade.

If you do an advanced search on eBay you can see sold listings which will give you a decent idea of worth (in my view) for each item. I guess you could expect 2/3 of the total for a job lot.

My feeling is that you will struggle to sell the lot as one unless you deal with a dealer experienced in low ball offers. The only bits that strike me as ‘of value’ and that is the turntables, alpahson arm andNaim bits.

I'd be inclined to cherry pick out the best stuff and sell it individually if u can at reasonable prices. Then sell rest as a job lot to whoever wants it

I'd say that's roughly what you could get selling it all individually on forums. As a job lot to a dealer I don't know but it will be less than that unless you get him drunk first ;)

That's rather an odd collection, and I agree with Mark, that only certain items would sell readily (decks, arms, Naim). However, unless they are in good saleable condition with some kind of provenance, it'd be tricky getting anywhere near 'market' price. As sales on the forums (well, certainly pfm) have been very slow for some time (there's even a thread about it), either pricing to sell regardless or taking a hassle punt on Ebay seem to be the most viable options, i.m.o.

Don't think you've got a snowball's chance in Hell of getting anything but peanuts for a job lot, as some of those items are of boot sale/charity shop status. Maybe cherry pick, then find an outlet for the rest.

And the SME 3009 series 11 is £250 (is not an improved and therefore more valuable) even without a genuine counterweight or headshell

I too think that your friends would bo themselves a disservice by selling as a joblot. If they invested a bit of time they could shift most of the higher value items on hifi forum sites and not pay any selling fees and have a decent amount of cash in their pockets.

So we're back to about £3K sold separately. Got to figure a dealer will only give 50% of that as a job lot.

Last few Ditton 66's on eBay I've watched haven't gone for less than £600 ( but I think that was a one off) and a couple have gone for £1500-£1600

Another set went for £950

Thing is whatever they sell at, I bet it will be higher or at worst the same as they paid for them originally [emoji6]

So whatever you get for them will be fine.

Agree they might go for more especially on ebay but who wants the agg of selling on ebay? - plus you need to take account of the fees. If they look really tatty that will drive the price down even if only cosmetic.

Yes they have gone crazy in the last 5 years. There was a time when you could barely give them away. But with no pictures of them I was being conservative in my valuation. A fully sorted pair will take on modern speakers retailing at five grand easy.

The prices mentioned won't be achieved if selling to a dealer. Remember, the dealer has to offer a warranty and will have to inspect, and possibly repair, some items before selling. They may also require PAT testing. Many of those items would probably just be too low value to bother with.

Give them a bell though.

I bought my Technics 1210 from him and was brilliant to deal with, I bought it at 5:30pm one evening with a discount off his eBay price and it was here next day !

Yes Paul...They were the same, cabinets need a refresh but they have found the fabric grille covers. It looks like a sale for the lot has been agreed today and I'm just awaiting confirmation of deposit paid; with both parties happy with the price offered...
I'm sure there's money to be made, if a little tlc is given to bring each item up to spec.
