Thorens TD124 Mk2 repair advice

I just got this as non working. The strobe light comes on but the speed selector is stuck fast. If I could just get it to budge and the platter turning it would be a good start. The speed selector is linked to the speed control and motor start by a steel band. From memory it's not that difficult to disassemble the speed control and clean it up.

I would also check:

if the motor runs cleanly
The drive belt is ok
And all the bearing are clean and oiled.

If the main bearing is damaged they are expensive to replace.

Sounds as though the speed selector mechanism has seized, probably due to the grease drying out.

Is there oil in the bearing well? Does the platter spin if turned by hand?

Can we have a photo of the underside of the deck.

Sent from my SM-G950F using TapatalkDisassembly was my thought too, a little daunting for a novice though. Although I just replaced the belts on my CD94 so I'm not totally cack handed. Presumably once I can select a speed I will find out if the motor runs. How would one go about checking the bearing?

Barry, has probably forgotten more about TD124's than I know.

But as he said check there is oil in the bearing well, and that the bearing shaft on the bottom of the platter is clean and smooth with a light coating of oil on it.

There is plenty of information on the net about servicing a 124, and several owners here and on other forums who can help.

I have rebuilt the motor on mine and used a rebuild kit for all the bearings.

The best advice I got was to use a little taclum powder on the drive belt.

With care, patience and guidance it’s certainly possible to renovate a TD-124 at relatively modest cost. Hanze HiFi in Holland have great expertise with the TD-124 and they sell some new parts. Jaap at Hanze does a very competent re-build service if DIY confidence evaporates.

Had a look today and I think this is way beyond my abilities and time. As my boiler had just been condemned (or at least the fitting) I think I need to raise some dosh off this sharpish..

On the plus point I just found there's a Shure M3D on it, no stylus but it seems well regarded, might order a stylus but will it work on my SME3009..?

Yes, the Shure M3D will work with an SME - though IMO, the SME deserves better.
