I know there were some interesting British speakers that had a woofer internally in reverse phase that effectively simulated a long line IIRC, I forget the name but they looked great. They also made some big actives you occasionally see, now what was the company called..?

Interesting, like an ABR but active, not sure what difference a relatively short line makes. Could be 1/8 wave I guess.

1/8 wavelength will be partly in phase at bass frequencies. It works, look at the B&W DM2.

Griffin Studio Electronic 85 that's the one I was thinking of. Patented tandem line. Mentioned on the below thread but mistakenly as an isobaric design. I'm convinced the internal B200 was out of phase and cancelled the back wave of the B139 to simulate an infinite line. Or something. Not quite sure what happened to the back wave of the B200 though, there's no such thing as a free lunch!

Enjoy!Thanks Tim I've wanted a pair for the last 10 years or so since I first read about them. One or two opportunities came up but I could never find a way of getting them home, at last it has all worked out. Plus the bonus of a turntable restoration thrown in has made it worth the hassle of sorting a couple of dodgy drivers and sorting out the collection.

When researching them in the past I've come across several owners in the States so you should keep an eye out for a pair, there are plenty of spares around for them, plus support from Falcon Acoustics is great. Have a look on here:

Thanks for the note, Lawrence! I do see various ones popping up here and there, and as much as I would love a pair, I have more or less resisted. One really good system is enough for me these days, I am pretty much done with rotating things in and out. But if I was going to go for another pair of speakers, they would be on my watch list!

Ok I know what I've been saying about the IMFs but I've just come up north for the weekend and had a listen to the unfinished DIY Bastani Dragonflies I got off PFM last time I was up. They are really nice sounding and if I could get them veneered they'd be keepers. Chalk and cheese but nice to have the choice of two pairs of great speakers. Will have to sell on my Celestion A1s, shame as I really like them.

Does anyone want the two big piles of What HiFi before they go to the tip?? Congratulations on those TLS80- I had an IMF "moment" a couple of years back, and thought about those, or the RPSM (similar).
Never got to hear them, did have a set of TDL Monitors which are as you may know a similar idea (4-way transmission line) in a more acceptable (but still bloody huge) box...I always had a feeling I'd like the KEF-voiced '70s style more.

Martin, I think I'm stuck at a point now of wanting to try much more modern designs- but at the same time knowing that old speakers can really "ring your bell".

Maybe at some point I could try the TLS50 in the future- I certainly thought about it a couple of times in the past.
Not really sure about transmission line bass- it sounds really cool to listen to, but not sure that it lends well to fast impact "down there".

I agree better suited to classical than rock I think, although I hate to make those sort of sweeping generalisations. Would also work as the mains on an A/V system. No subs required!


I also moved on to more modern speakers after several years of vintage (Ditton 44, Akai SW175, and the IMFs).
