Crackle Noise

Just changed the CD player, which I use as a transport via the digital out to an external DAC. When I load a CD, and the drawer closes, there is a crackle from the loudspeakers. It happens when I select different tracks too. It happens also via the Toslink.
The sound is similar to a surface imperfection on a vinyl record.
Does anyone know what causes this?

Did This happen before you changed the CD player, if not, check all connections as a "loose" interconnect may cause this.

If all connections good suspect all is not well with the new CD player.

I think that this is a function of modern CD players, I first bought a Yamaha which did it, then a Marantz CD 5005 which if you listen very closely to the loudspeakers makes this noise.
I have lodged a request to Marantz to see what their slant is, not heard yet.

been using a marantz sa8005 as a transport for months ... there is NO noise at all , nor should there be . defo something wrong there

Regardless of what Marantz say there shouldn't be any noise.

Try changing input on your amp to any other line level input .

Swap out digital interconnect, try analogue outputs direct into amp?

There is no noise via analogue out, only digital spdif an Toslink. Other input on amp have no effect.

i use my marantz sacd co ax out into the dac . there is no noise whatsoever . i read that thread . seems very odd

It’s the sound of the DAC reacting to the transport changing the signal from 16/48 or 24/48 to 16/44.1. This generally only happens with DVD drives; pure CD drives only output 16/44.1, so you don’t get switching noises.

I had a Yamaha CD player which did it as well, whereas my old Marantz 6000OSE didn’t!

Marantz’s take on the issue: We have had no similar reports of these kinds of problems and as we are unable to recreate, it could be some kind of isolated issue.

The other question we feel should also be asked here, is why the DAC is not muting upon no input signal. This in itself is a bit unusual, but may of course be by design.

If the player is inside its 2 year applied warranty period, it may be worth considering getting the player checked at service via the retailer, to confirm it is working correctly on a component level.

Wondered if you managed to resolve the crackling noise Michael? I use a Marantz CD6006 and this week took delivery of a Beresford Caiman SEG DAC to replace my faulty Arcam rDAC. I love the sound of the Caiman but I'm having the same problem you describe when the dac is connected to the Marantz. I also have it connected to a DAB tuner without any problems.

Stan suggested I try the different sound modes but the noise persists in each setting. I also noticed today a loud pop from the speakers when the cdp is turned off while it's connected to the dac. At normal listening volume the 'pop' is quite loud, and at higher levels I'm worried that this could potentially damage the speakers.

Stan also referred me to your discussion and I was interested in Marantz's response about the dac not muting upon no input signal.

I have used the same cdp with an Arcam dac for several years without any issues, so I can only think that the cdp and the dac are not compatible. I was hoping I could have adjustments made to either the dac or the cdp to make them compatible, but this doesn't seem possible.

I don't want to give up on this lovely sounding dac, and don't want to replace the Marantz, which is less than 2 years old, so I'm eager to hear on any possible solutions.
