Went to listen to some IMF TLS80s I'm supposed to be buying today, but they had 1, possibly 2, scratchy sounding mid ranges. He's happy to wait while I try and find replacements. I know about the Falcon re-release version but the cost would probably make the total too high. So I'm wondering if anyone has one or two going spare?

I'll have a look in the cupboard tomorrow and see if I have any left. I definitely have SP1057 (big magnet/higher power rated) version, but I don't think they are quite right for that job.

Maybe, via gravity, the drivers are scratchy as they have gone off centre? Running the speakers upside down for an extended period may cure it. Or turning the drivers around by 180 degrees? Just a thought.

Right, I think I do have a couple, but it isn't quite straightforward- I'll pm you Lawrence!

EDIT: Sadly I realised that I no longer have any B110 apart from the SP1057s. Sorry I couldn't help.

Not sure what the difference is between the TLS 80 and the TLS 80 Mk.2, but I doubt there's much. IMF spent years refining their TLS designs before the TLS80 came along. I thought they sounded bloody marvellous. The reviewers at the time said similar.

The TLS 80 has a lot going for it. The mid and top are lovely, but there again, the HF2000 is probably my favourite supertweeter. Despite the odd dispersment of drivers, they actually image rather well and of course there's the bass, it's superb!

Yep, they are in a KEF cs1 kit at the moment as shown below. Let me know if you are interested, and I'll remove them. I was hoping for £125 inc P&P

CS1A surely, the CS1 did not use the SP1003. I made CS1a's, they were very good.

I'm thinking a bit of water based glue is the best option to fix them back on?

The "plastic looking ring" is actually double sided sticky tape. Either cut a similar one from wide double sided tape or use a modest amount of contact adhesive. Water based glue is not exactly ideal for bonding metal.

Lawrence001
08-11-2018, 08:07
Actually I was slightly wrong, there's a ring that's completely off which looks like the sticky tape, then there's another ring underneath which is peeling on one side and it looks like the diaphragm is underneath that. I'll look closer when I get them home. Anyway it sounded fine.

The ring underneath is a type of card and can be glued back. Again, contact adhesive would be best.

It may.

Have you seen this. https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?51367-The-walpurgis-fix-for-buzzing-and-rubbing-speakers!

I wrote it some time ago. It may work. Bit fiddlier on small drivers, but doable.

Are the drivers still evidently rubbing Lawrence?

Lawrence001
09-11-2018, 15:16
I read a post online saying try pushing them gently in and out a few times it might clear the"blockage". I couldn't rotate 180degs as the wires were too short but managed 90. Not audibly rubbing right now but then it's only certain frequencies. The slight distortion on the left appears to be the HF1300. Thanks for the tip [emoji3]

Sent from my BLN-L21 using TapatalkHi mate. Some other variants may fill in as well but you'll have to check. Some people do this to get away from bextrene sound, some love it. Good speaker, lacking only a bit in today's standards in HF. So adding a supertweeter.. Raal or cheaper really opens it up. I have kef 107 with b110 and Raal and not even Wilson's can touch it. Good luck. Falcons are as good but may change overall balance putting it forward. If you like that go for it. I'd wait to get originals though.

Sent from my EVA-L09 using TapatalkI thought the B110 from Falcon was supposed to be matched to the original spec, any difference from the original version being due to the latter aging. I'm tempted to try these Monacor replacements, heresy I know..

There's nothing wrong with the frequency range, they have a Celestion HF1200 and HF2000s each side. Not quite as refined as my recent Ushers but then the caps are old.

They're pretty robust, may be something to do with the long spring steel band thingy that's connected to that control. It's a long time since I did anything to my TD124. About 1978 I fitted the Papst motor conversion.
