Hi folks

I thought it might be a good idea to create a new thread after the negativity surrounding the pre-release.

Here is a link to the Logitech Touch Forum

So in an effort to put a positive spin on this product, it might be nice if we could share our experiences here :)

Hi Ali

Yes they do,for a couple of seconds, and the Touch says it is buffering. It's fine if I just let the album play, but pauses if I skip tracks.

I have to say how good I find these hi-rez files though. My first impression was how vinyl-like they sound, very like I remember Marco's Techie sounding at Owston when I heard it the first time (though I remember thinking at the time how cd-like the techie sounded!) The glare that is present in a lot of cd recordings is totally absent, and the very revealing statics readily show how much better these are than red book standard. There is a sense of ease about the sound like you get from a good vinyl deck, and resolution is amazing. The only downside is the size of the files, about 1.4 Gb per album, and that's a FLAC compressed file!

Lol - that can actually be a good thing, you know! ;)

Many turntables (mostly of the low-mass belt-drive variety) sound tubby and coloured as hell... The Techie avoids the cloggy euphony many (wrongly in my view) deem as the recognised 'signature of analogue', by presenting a more accurate portrayal of the information that is actually on records.

Although how my Techie sounds these days is markedly different (way better) compared to when you first heard it at Owston.

Anyway, chaps, my apologies for the rather rude interruption - as you were! :eyebrows:

The development team at Logitech will be burning lots of midnight oil working out how to get TinySC to handle 24/96 files without stuttering.

This does indicate that SOX resampling is not going to be possible on TinySC - I have a couple of 24/192 albums in my library, and SBS handles the downsampling to 24/48 for my SB3 just fine.
Not that there are many 24/192 albums out there.

Didn't mean that in a bad way Marco,I thought your deck was very good, just sounded a little more digital-like in a clean way compared to say Will's slate 401-perhaps more clinical may be a better way to describe it.I wouldn't call Will's deck coloured though! I'm crap at explaining what I hear, but I would call Will's deck more analogue sounding than yours, yet I wouldn't call either coloured-it's difficult to describe, though I'd say Will's deck draws me in,in a way the Techie didn't at the time,on first hearing, though that's down to the rest of his system too. What I meant is that though these hi-rez are clean sounding in the way your deck is,kind of like good cd is,they sound more analogue than digital,at least to my ears on my system. With hi rez files,I don't think anything can come near a streamer like the Touch for the money, certainly no cd player.

That seems to mirror my finding to Ali! The difference between Redbook & hi-rez is quite large & I also find hi-rez files to sound more like vinyl than an higher resolution redbook as i was expecting!

My PC > E-Mu 0404 > ADM system shows these differnces very nicely, but I also did these tests with a ModWright Transporter which sounded simply devine & with the hi-rez very like a nice vinyl set-up!

Ali, Do you use your touch into the AN Dac? This is where my interest lies, I fancy buying a touch & using it into my AN Dac (when it arrives) & hopefully getting a sound close to the ModWright! Once sorted I'll listen to the Touch/AN Dac against Marks ModWright & see how they compare.

I haven't had a Transporter in my system, but yes,I'm using the Touch with my AN Zero dac, which is a very good combination.A few folk reckon the Touch with a good dac is pretty close to the Transporter, and for a lot less.I will probably change the dac for something diy though.Having heard Nick's Buffalo dac with 6n1p PP output stage into Sowter trannies,I think that's the way to go.A stunning sound, and would go well with the Touch I think.

It'll have to be good to beat the Modwright though.I've not heard one,but been told it's one of the best out there.

Yes indeedy. There are valid reasons for it too ;)

I know what you mean, but I think you might be surprised at just how close a *very* good CDP gets to the sound you describe.

Sadly, the days are gone when anything remotely affordable qualifying as such was available, and that's largely why, in terms of audio performance, streaming has taken over... To put it bluntly, 90% of CDPs today are pieces of plastic shit and (sometimes) make streaming sound better than it actually is!

I also suspect that the majority of people who've embraced streaming have never heard a truly great CDP (something massively over-engineered to do the job with almost no compromise).

Marco.

Ali Tait
21-04-2010, 13:28
Aye,but I think you'd be talking about something like the new dcs or similar, and even then, they won't be able to play the 24/96 files if it's just a red book player,so I think no matter how expensive,it'll never match a 200 quid streamer playing a hi-rez file. You do need a good dac though!

Marco
21-04-2010, 13:34
Nope, DCS players are pish - I hate upsampling with a passion (all their players upsample), as to my ears it sounds artificial! :spew:

I'm primarily talking about high-end built-like-a-brick-shithouse, non-bollocks'd about with, classic CDPs produced in the heyday of CD (1989-1995), or thereabouts, such as my Sony and other players of its ilk :)

If the Touch/AN Dac can get somewhere close to the ModWright at about 1/5 of the price I would be very pleased indeed Ali. The ModWright is adout at the top of the streaming tree & I'm just trying to get close to it at a fraction of the price.

We A/B tested the ModWright against a Linn Akurate & there was very little difference in sound quality some people couldn't discern any difference at all. I'm also a big fan of the Weiss Dac & Mac mini route but alas both the ModWright & Weiss are out of my price range atm. The 6n1p dac sounds interesting though, you diy boys have all the fun :)

Marco,

As Ali says even the very best of Redbook CDPs whether classic early 90's CDP or one of todays better CDP (I really like the RA Opus 21) will always only be 16/44.1. If hi-rez files really take off that limitation won't be able to live with the better streamers!

That said if an Opus 21 comes up at the right price when I have a little more money in my hi-fi fund it would be mine!

LOL I meant players in that price range! As for your Sony, good as it is,it can't play hi-rez files.I don't think any red book cd player,no matter how expensive, could match the Touch playing hi-rez files. It's not just the 24/96 though,it's excellent with cd too!

The bit in bold though is the million dollar question... Exactly how much NEW real music (not audiophile tinkly-tinkly pap) is available as high-res downloads, compared to the same on CD?

For me, no matter how good high-res downloads sound, unless I can obtain the same quantity of choice of new music, as is available now on CD (and/or CD and vinyl together), then I'd simply not be interested! Choice seems rather limited at the moment, and I'm not convinced it's likely to get better to the degree I'd require to wholeheartedly embrace the format.

As for the audio performance aspect of high-res downloads, I can't really comment as I've yet to hear any reproduced through a genuinely top-notch system (something I could actually live with), so until then I'll reserve judgement.

However, what I will say is that I'm sceptical of an entity which may well start out as 'high-res', being diluted into something rather inferior, as it makes its way through the replay chain of (noisy, non-audiophile friendly) paraphernalia attached to the average computer streaming set-up, and its inherent sonic compromises.............

What use is there in sampling the finest claret after it’s been strained though a sweaty sock? ;)

Hi Marco,

I agree at present there is a limited amount of 'real' music available as Hi-Rez but the catalogue is growing slowly all the time https://www.hdtracks.com/ for one are starting to add some better stuff. We will have to see what happens long term but I remember this same point of view when CD was introduced & the hardcore vinyl lovers said the same about quantity of CD. With hindsight this turned out to be quite shortsighted of them. On the other hand I did own a betamax VCR.

As the streamers are getting better though Marco, The ModWright for one sounds as good as a lot of the better CDP even on 16/44.1 recordings. For me I'm just looking to add another source but the writing could be on the wall for CDP for me.

The file can be streamed from NAS so there's not even a need to have a PC in the playback chain so that may acount for the worry of added noise and can be checked for bit perfect.

Starting with a touch into a Dac is not a big investment & is adding to my largish collection of Records & CDs. No brainer for me!

No problem with the banter but I have been looking for some comparisons of the Touch against other streamers.

So far every thread seems to sidetrack into something not specific to the Touch or concerns the operation/set up of it. There's even a thread on the Logitech forum that just deteriorated into the usual slagging match about cables.

I was really looking forward to seeing how the Touch compares against the competition but so far not too much comment.

I agree, though this stuff is still in it's infancy,I'm sure it will take off,it's just like cd when that came out.As for the replay chain, that's why I waited for the Touch,as you can connect your hard-drive (in my case a Drobo) directly to it,avoiding the need to run a pc at the same time,so I just have the Touch, and a square black box with 4 hard-drives in it connected together with a USB,and that's it.Simples! Pretty much any storage device will work with it.

great quote from one of the (senior?) beta testers of the Touch..

"If by modified SB3 you are referring to the SB+, then yes it is as good as a Transporter. But if you are talking about Boulder or any of the other rip-offs selling modified SB3's then not even close to a TP or even up to a Touch for that matter. By borrowing most and buying a few, I have tested almost all of them. Some actually perform worse then a base line SB3 and most only show the slightest increase on the graph which is not even enough to be enough to be heard because the improvement is so so small as to be barely the thickness of the original graphing line better. When doing accurate and extensive listening tests, there are no differences or improvements if one hasn't spend ones hard earned dollars and expecting to hear some! Besides by the time one buys an SB3 and gets it back from Boulder with all the possible modifications, one could have just bought a Transporter and saved $300 or more dollars and ended up with a Transporter that does play 24/96 native!

By my remarks about the Transporter, please don't get me wrong as the Touch will make a fine digital transport that is a big improvement over the SB3 with the added bonus of playing 24/96 native. It is just my opinion from listening to both of them for over 6 months and testing them that the win still goes to the Transporter. I firmly believe this is especially true if both are being used for their analog outputs. The Transporter has superior analog outs. Running both digital outputs into my Dodson DA-217 MK2-D Digital Processor things get much closer with again with the Transporter being the winner (but its much closer). So it comes down to how its being used as to which to buy now. IMO if one is using analog outs and has to have the best, the Transporter wins hands down. If one only needs a digital transport for a very good DAC, then I say buy a Touch. "

Ali Tait
21-04-2010, 20:48
As Jerry says, the Touch does, but apparently changing the supply makes no difference due to the design.I remain to be convinced of that though. The Drobo uses one too,but is only connected to the Touch via USB,so not an issue as far as sound quality is concerned.

I am considering a Touch in next couple of months. I see a lot of posts on the Touch but most seem to be using an external dac so would be nice to see more on the Touch used direct. I would like to know if its analogue outputs playing lossless files will be better than my Arcam CD73. I only have access to the dac in the Onkyo and when I tried digital out from the CD73 it was not as good especially in the sound stage.

I decided to copy some 24/96 tracks to a 4GB SD card this evening and they played without stuttering

Got mine yesterday. Direct from Logitech for £220 delivered. Using a 15% discount code I found (LOGIDEAL15 - may still work).

Went in fine, moved a few bits around and moved the SB3 into the AV room :)

Didn't have time to really listen as had friends round for dinner, but it plays 24/96 from DVD-A fine - which was the trigger for buying it really - and the stuttering on the startup of 24/96 FLAC is reduced with hardwired Ethernet. I hope and assume they will fix this in future updates. I don't want to decode to PCM in my already overloaded ReadyNAS NV+.

Now, to find time to listen and play with Caiman opamps too...

Might still be able to get some items cheaper elsewhere though, so compare the discounted list price with the price from other sellers.

I think some of the most useful comments about the Touch at the Logitech Forum came from the Beta Testers. These are very experienced listeners, most have good systems, and a couple of them even do things like build DACs - so they have a big basis for comparison.

The general opinion seemed to be that the Touch is superior to all the earlier SB devices except for the Transporter (which is being phased out). Both analogue and digital output.

As far as being a digital source only, there was general agreement that the Touch was very close to the quality of the Transporter. A couple of the Beta Testers even said that if your goal is only to use an SB device as a digital Transport, they would definitely go with the Touch and not the Transporter, as the quality is very close, and the price difference is significant. One Beta Tester even said he doubts in blind testing that listeners could consistently pick out the Touch vs the Transporter as digital transports.

The most interesting feature of the Touch to me is using it as a USB HDD music player.

Apparently you can connect connect the Touch to a self powered USB hub like this:

and connect numerous USB storage devices to it.

The Touch will work as a server/player so there is no need to have a computer or NAS to steam to it. Anyone tried this?

I have to research further factors such as the maximum size of the usb storage devices and the limitations of using the Touch in this method.

If the Touch, as a server, can handle a series of 1TB (or larger) hard disks well - then the price would be well worth it to me as all my cds are ripped and the physical discs stored away. The only use I have for the network function is probably for internet radio, which i listen to occasionally.

I've bought a Guruplug to run SC on,so file size will not be an issue in the future.Should get it in about 3 weeks-

It's the Plus version I've gone for.

Also means I can try the Audiophile tweaks suggested at Slimforums.

Have you got your hands on it yet Ali ?

If you're up and running with it, how well does it cope, and can you access internet radio via the iPlayer on Squeezebox Server - the R3 320kbps AAC streams sound very good indeed, although BBC broadcasts in general sound very good off the 'net.

Nope, still delayed Chris, while they mod them to stop the overheating issues. They are hard to get hold of,only answering when you send a nasty mail.Doesn't inspire confidence!

They said they will be shipping shortly, though I'll believe it when I see it.
