It’s a modern reinvention of the Meitner turntable - I quite like it.

I wouldn't give £20, let alone £2,000 for a platter-less TT!

Life stylee but probably sounds shite. May work better with 180 gram vinyl.

You don’t ‘need’ a platter.

Care to elaborate?

Ok, so why does my vinyl sound so much better with a copper mat in place of a rubber mat.

Audio Technica thought you didn't need a platter:

Interestingly 99.99% of all TTs manufactured do use a platter, so there must be something they are doing right.

I remember way back in the mists of time Rega made a turntable called The Planet which instead of a conventional platter had three arms from the spindle with round pods on the other ends. it looked very pretty and futuristic but I recall it was found that as the record wasn't supported properly there was a negative effect on sound quality. I would imagine having no support at all would cause similar or worse problems too.

Mine has 6 pods I think. Works very well

Mine has one big round pod that looks a bit like a platter. ;)

Six pods would give much better support, like the Michell decks

Thought you used a TD160?

The Transcriptors TT used a platter with 6 or 12 rubber 'tips' to support the record. Looked very stylish and modern - but I didn't think a good idea at the time.

Well actually thinking about it having a platter may introduce problems. I’ve never really thought about it before, but I presume your copper mat is better than the rubber one because it absorbs/isolates the record more from the inherent vibrations and noise from the platter. So does this not imply having a platter causes it’s own issues.

Having said that a record flapping around in the wind seems rather prone to air borne vibration and from poor isolation the TT sits on. Also the bearing would as usual need to be exceptionally good to not transmit any noise to the record. Perhaps this is reason for its cost. Might be an interesting listen even though I don’t like it visually.

I would say the opposite, a rubber mat would absorb more than copper. We could do with Frank Derney's input on this.

Partly because a rubber mat is one of the worst ways of supporting a record.

I’ve tried dozens of different record mats and my favourite uses a number of tiny pips that only support the record at the edge of the record label, the rest of the record is entirely unsupported.

So that sort goes along with the concept of the weird design with no platter?
