Potentially daft question

I'm aware this maybe a how long is a piece of string type question but how difficult is it to change a tone arm or does it vary depending on the turntable?
I've seen a few TTs for sale without tone arms & wondered how easy it is to fit a replacement?

as long as the arm has the same mount and spindle to pivot distance than its pretty straightforward. If your fitting the same arm that was originally on the deck its not going to be difficult. if not, you will need to make or buy a new armboard suitable to the arm, and that there is enough room on the deck to fit it etc. Not that difficult but takes a little more thought.

Turntables sold without tonearms will either have an original arm specified or a range of suitable arms that should fit. The commonest fittings are SME type. Rega and Linn.

If you have a particular turntable in mind, a Google search will normally produce details of arms that can be used.

If your new to turntables you could be letting yourself in for a whole load of pain if you buy one without an arm.

My advice would be to buy a complete turntable.

Which turntable is it you are thinking of ? It might well just be a few minutes work to fit an arm.

It’s not a daft question Gary, but the answer is rather as you suspect. The reality is that the difficulty involved vastly depends on the particular arm and the particular turntable.

If the deck you buy has either of the Rega fittings, either the single hole for the earlier RB250/RB300,
or the later 3 point fixing arm base for the later arms fitting a replacement arm is a 5 minute job at most, easy peasey. Unless it involve removing the chassis from the plinth which would take longer.
