The Prisoner

Did anyone watch the first part of 'The Prisoner' last night? What did you think of it?

I remember watching the series when it was screened the first time. Didn't really understand it, but it was new - much in the same way 'Dr Who' was new. Saw 'The Prisoner' series again when Channel 4 showed it in the '80s; it was still enigmatic.

This new series is a British/American co-production. Despite a change of location, a new 'look' and what appears to be a change in socio-political situation, the first part showed promise. Ian McKellen was, I thought, very good as 'Number 2', as was Jim Caviezel as 'Number 6'.

Trust it continues to maintain the initial promising start.

I watched the film Bourne Identity instead, did i miss much, i seemed to me to appeal to those who watched it first time around and i for one was to young to understand it.

I thought it was dull. Remember the first series and the beginning with No 6 driving that little sports car in London? It was all done at a furious pace to build up the tension and show his frustration when he woke up in the village.
The new one just doesn't have that-its too laid back.

Haven't got a TV, so didn't even know this was on. Was it as bad as the one-off US/UK 'Dr Who' they made, starring Paul McGann?

I forgot it was on. I watched a few minutes of it and then while channel hoping discovered that Sky are actually showing Pacific on a normal Sky channel. All their advertising suggested strongly that only Sky Movies customers would see it...but there it was on Sky 3. Not knowing it was going to be on I missed part one :(:steam:.

Hollywood and TV seems increasingly to be bankrupt of any new ideas hence all the remakes. Frankly as weird as the Prisoner was and I must be honest here and say that I did not watch it much (during the 80's reshowing) I think it is a pointless exercise in doing a reboot. I liked the original opening scenes and music. The original was unique and should be left to stand as is.

I watched the first two parts of the remake of V and so far this might actually be better than the original mini series (the TV series was crap, as it was like the A team with laser pistols). V remake is on scifi channel.

Dr Who last night was a joke. Huge issues were created by poor plotting and leaving out plot devices to explain things like Spitfires that can fly in space :doh: No harm guys but fitting Dalek technology would take more than 4 minutes, better imho to have simply said "what about using the prototype Dalek Spitfires" That would then have allowed something much better and believable to have been done. Another problem is where did the new Daleks come from. The writer imho treated his audience as idiots as he could not be bothered explaining this at all. I had high hopes for Stephen Moffat but so far its as bad as Russel T davies :doh::(:steam:

I do quite like the new Dalek designs though.

I'm always interested in remakes -though they seldom improve on the original. Sometimes a remake can bring out different aspects of the story, for example Solaris.

Liked Ian McNeice as Churchill.

I do quite like the new Dalek designs though. Which one are you Neil: Drone, Scientist, Strategist, Leader (or maybe Eternal)? Still need to go on a diet - or lay off the steroids! ;)

I think there are a few surprises to come in regard to the new Daleks. The new look is very much in keeping with the 60's movie Daleks and a little bit of the new Second Empire Daleks

I loved the new 'Prisoner' and the old Renault Dauphin and thought the latest incarnation of the Daleks was just fabulous. I can see this new Doctor Who series shows great promise. I never was one for living forty five years in the past.

Damn it forgot that was on!

But it would have to be damn good to beat the original - I watched it for the first time when Channel 4 showed it in about 1983. Then watched it all again the next time they ran it in about 1993 - got the student lodgers into it that time too!

Fact is - In the original McGoohans performance holds the whole thing together, especiallly in the weaker (and there are a few) episodes, so unless the remake has an actor of at least that calibre I would say good luck but goodbye.

Curious, I liked every Doctor, to varying degrees, except the John Pertwee version. He was awful!
