Static explosions

Sorry about the dramatic title but im having a big problem with new pressings im buying. A lot of records im buying, especially the posh 180gm pressings have lots of static and make me jump out of my seat with the pops that build up.
Is their some tried and tested methods for neutralising this? Maybe an accessory like a milty zerostat or something.

Some turntables appear to make more of this problem than others.

Is the metalwork of your turntable earthed ? Try a different mat and try increasing the humidity around the turntable. If the air is very dry, when the central heating is on, this can make matters worse. A damp clean of the LP's and good antistatic mats will help. Personally, I have never had much success with anti-stat guns.

I live in a basement flat which can get warm easily but also can get damp so i imagine the humidity is high. I also have to dust regularly. Well once a week which is a lot for a single guy;) I use a dave c mat now but it was doing it with my Funk mat also.
Ive wondered about the earth. The deck is earthed to the pre amp but should i earth it to my integrated?

I don't think the record weight has anything to do with it. Are these new purchases any worse than others you have?.

Sometimes the type of inner sleeve and how vigorously you pull out the record from the inner sleeve can have an effect; plastic-lined inners can be bad for static. The best inner liners were, in my opinon, made by E-Stat. Carbonised paper- fibre sleeves, distributed by Tannoy, they were the best, as well as being the most expensive - but they do work. Sadly they seem to be no longer available.

I remove surface dust with a Decca carbon fibre brush (with the other hand touching the metalwork of the deck) and have no problems with static discharge 'clicks', 'pops' or 'bangs'. I have never used a static 'zap gun' and have never found the need, but they do no harm and might be the solution to your problem.

I have noticed records in the posh plastic bags do seem to give more problems .
I buy a lot of funk compilations from the likes of Souljazz and although they are very simple and basic packages they never give problems and always sound great.
What about the Goldring sleeves or the musical fidelity ones sold on Russ Andrews site? Thay cost about £20 for 50.

Back in June last year, I got some sleeves which I posted about on AoS.

This is what I said:

This morning, I received a thick parcel from Japan containing some anti-static inner sleeves. These are the cheapest I've ever bought by a long way and of good quality.

They took about 2 weeks to arrive.

For some reason I can't log on to the Russ Andrews site. I would like to know their construction but at 40p a pop, can't be too bad. Avoid the Nagaoka inner sleeves; not for their anti-static properties, but for the fact that they crumple easily when inserting the record into the outer sleeve.

Take a punt on either the Goldring or Musical Fidelity inner sleeves and let us know how you get on - I'm on the look out for replacement inner sleeves.

To address Barry's point about the Nagaoka type crumpling: the ones I bought are like those. They're D-shaped & do crumple fairly easily, but for 15p, I'm happy to put up with the odd one being pushed into the paper sleeve & having to fish it out!

The guy i bought my deck from once told me to get rid of static give the record a wash with disstiled water, but after a bad experience with disco anti stat cleaner i think ill wait until i can buy a proper machine

Back then, you were enquiring if there might be some AoS members who could join you and share in a bulk purchase of the sleeves you mention. I had been meaning to ask you if you are still interesed in such an endeavour. I would be interested in say at least 200 such sleeves, maybe more.

Actually, I said that I'd just received some, & DaveK asked if I'd sell him some of them!
It was then he that suggested a group purchase.

I've not bought any more since then, though I've used a lot more than 200 (we found a stash tucked away when we moved house), so I don't need any yet. But it's only a matter of time. I'm using the RCM a lot more nowadays because it's right there now, beside the turntable, so no special effort required as there was before.

As I said above, the postage price has gone up but they may be persuaded to do a good deal if a decent sized order was assembled.

The Goldring ones are only in packs of 25 and cost about £15, the Mobile Fidelity ones are in 50 packs for £20.

Got some from RA a couple of weeks ago, credit where it's due, ordered Monday, delivered Tuesday, service doesn't get much better than that.

I wouldn't worry about the conditions in your room affecting static. Warm humid air should actually help to prevent static. It's a very very dry room you want to avoid as that promotes static. 20 degrees C, 50% humidity is the optimum as it's not cold enough to cause condensation on warm equipment, not hot enough to affect equipment reliability, not humid enough to cause rust and not dry enough to cause static. It's the sweet spot in the middle. This is what I aim for at work in our server room. Obviously it's not something you should worry too much about in a home environment but I thought I'd mention it seen as it was relevant. :) I'm going to get back in my IT cupboard now and wait for someone to break their computer. :lol:

Safer to buy from there rather than russ andrews site. They will tell me i need the latest mains gizmo and ill fall for it:mental:
