Not happening here. Your adblocker may have got turned off, assuming you have one.
always been ads at top and bottom banners. they help pay the site costs

did with both of mine. got a triangle at top left requiring attention. i dis connected ublock until i check if they have changed anything. on is a 64 bit and other is 64 bit ready but actually running 32 bit

at top above the aos screen you will see the address bars... at far right you should see 3 parallel white bars .. a single click should open a menu where you will find add ons(I take it your on firefox_

If you are on Windows, perhaps a scan with Malwarebytes would be good

More like a browser issue I'd think, seeing as it seems to only affect Firefox users. They've probably done an update of some sort that's affecting ad blocking. Should be easy enough to sort out. Or try another browser for now.

Nah, no such thing on mine, just a few symbols that look like a book, a star, a half star half three black lines (says it's a hub) and three other symbols.

I get no ads at all on any site, unless I've unblocked them. But I use an alternative browser.
There are other adblocker downloads available for Firefox, like StopAd.

Nope - haven't used Firefox or Chrome in years ... Safari only - and no recent updates on my machine either.
Checked a number of other forums that use ads and no problems at all in individual threads - just AoS.

Getting the ads coming up on both Firefox and MS Edge now, only with AOS, no other sites.
ublock on firefox is working fine on win10. Mac folk may be different.

Just tried on an up to date Chromebook, Firefox with ublock, all OK, no ads.
ublock installed on both browsers, ads gone. Excellent.

Just started yesterday - and yes, in the middle of posts and intensely annoying (and only on AoS for me)
Tried with Safari, Chrome and Firefox and it's the same with all - and on desktop and mobiles devices.
Installing ad blockers on all your devices will help - but seems to me more like a change to the website that's causing it.

Could be a bit of malicious software doing the rounds that turns off adblocking.
This is getting to the point it almost unusable

Im not using fire fox and its affecting me
an ad block will remove them, but on the likes of ios mobile safari etc its not letting you. safari changed something which stopped adblockers working. there is a post about this further back.
on a mobile device you should use tapatalk as its set up for forums and much easier to read and use.

Thanks Geoff, just looked nothing in extensions... downloaded Adgaurd but message saying sure you want to open etc... just concerned now.. computer numpty here... The main reason why i never do computer audio.. more problems with Laptops and desktops than any hifi kit..

grant im getting all ads too,in the middle of peoples posts and at the top,it not us its aos.
im using firefox\win10 with ublock switched on.. i get no ads. sure it will settle down but i will say again.. if on a mobile then use tapatalk. otherwise use ublock on win10. there is an issue with safari as well so you cant get an ad block for it, at least not on my ipad

adblocker works on a my Mac running Chrome
.. safari changed something which stopped adblockers working. there is a post about this further back.

The article Geoff linked to was simply an advertising feature for AdGaurd that made claims about Safari - all of which were 'old news' .... Apple has never supported downloaded third party apps except through App Store so any that do not come from that source will carry warnings when installing.
The 'article' is basically re-hashed bunkum.

However, due to a substantial loss in revenue recently from Skimlinks (up until now our main source of income for maintaining the site running costs), as a result of changes to GDPR and the sharing of personal data, we've had to address that shortfall by increasing the ad content on the site, which is why more have appeared recently.
Initially, ads will pop up in some unusual places, but this will settle down once the software 'learns' where they're best put (based on which boxes are being clicked most often), so in a short while the placement of ads will hopefully become less intrusive.
It's unfortunate that this has had to happen, but the substantial loss in revenue from Skimlinks simply wasn't sustainable, particularly in conjunction with the site's ever-increasing running costs, which I trust folks will appreciate. The other way round this would be for regular members to make donations, as happens on other sites, but I'm reluctant to do that, as I'd rather that the site was self-funding.
If the revenue we receive from Skimlinks improves again to an acceptable level, then I'll review our usage of Google Adsense. Until then, I would ask members to be patient until the new system stabilises, and if necessary implement the use of an effective Ad Blocker on their browser (this is one I'd recommend for Chrome: https://adblockplus.org/), or if using mobile phones, access the site via Tapatalk. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Skimlinks was great because it basically gave AOS 'credit' for purchases made as a result of links hosted on the forum. While you may be cautious about sites 'tracking' where you click, consenting to this sort of thing when you get a prompt does mean that site costs are covered and ensures that AOS is able to support itself.
There are plenty of ad-blockers out there if you need one, but you might want to think about whitelisting AOS if you get value out of your time here :)

I would have no problem making a ££££ contribution re the running costs , You could add a voluntary payment tab
zero £ and zero pence is very good value , but little in life is for free :)
even with the site whitelisted the ads are just at bottom or top of page with me on firefox. clicking on some at bottom/top will persuade the ads that thats the best place for them.
i still have ads everywhere and im using firefox.

its standad ads you get all over the web. we are not selling your personal info. if you dont want to see ads you can block them.

Maybe Marco should introduce a membership fee for the freeloaders as well. I have happily been paying my share of the money required to keep AoS online and add free since that option was introduced several years ago. But with the new GDPR laws it's a bit of an unequal burden on the paying members if people don't want adds.

Personally, I would rather have a few adverts than pay a subscription fee.
I think there'd have been less of an issue if the change had been announced in advance. When all those ads started popping up yesterday I thought AoS had been hacked!
Agreed. The first thing I did was launch a malware scan.
as i said, ive no idea why some folk are getting ads in the post area. most are not, and with an ad block dont even get the banner ads.
Its not all to do with the new ads imo.

Rest assured that, as Grant has said, we weren't selling anything, least of all any personal data. Before the recent changes in GDPR took place, Skimlinks would simply process the 'credit' for purchases made as a result of links (such as to ebay and Amazon) hosted on the forum.
What's happening now, if the end-user has made such a purchase, is that a prompt/pop-up will appear first asking for consent for affiliate and advertising purposes. If the end-user accepts, Skimlinks stores a record of that consent, and we get credit for the purchase. If the user does not, they still continue onto the merchant (such as ebay or Amazon), as usual, but AoS doesn't get any credit.
Obviously what's been happening, and why revenue from Skimlinks has rapidly declined since the recent changes to GDPR, is that folks have been declining consent, because of being cautious about sites 'tracking' where they click, which is understandable. However, providing consent does mean that the site costs are covered, and ensures that AoS is able to support itself.
We would of course leave it up to the individuals concerned whether to give such consent or not, but it's worth considering, especially for those mindful of the site continuing being able to generate the income necessary to pay for itself.
As a point of note, in that respect, a donations tab will be set up in due course for any members who would like to make a voluntary donation at their discretion. Thanks again to all for their understanding in this matter:cool:

I am on an iPad right now, ads top and bottom of page, nowhere else. On my PC, no ads as I use ad blocker. For myself ads are fine, things need paid for in some way.
Marco put a post up explaining why more adverts, might be an idea to read why [emoji6]

I still think forum users should have been informed in advance , rather than after. A sticky or a post would have made a big difference to the frustration and to a computer numpty like myself the fear that my computer has been infected by a virus type of thing...

One possible solution is the standard notice that surfers get when accessing most sites these days, such as on the TAS forum, or the Guardian news paper website. That way you have the option to go and join a different audio forum where there are no adds. I haven't found any myself yet, so some people might well have to give up visiting audio forums and stick to xhamster etc instead.

Point taken, Dave. However, it would've been impossible to predict the impact of the changes on each member, as people use different browsers, some of which are more affected by the changes we've implemented than others, and also, like myself, use ad-blocking software, and so would've encountered no issues - and indeed likely been oblivious to what's happened.
Also, we didn't know exactly how the software would work, in terms of how and where it would place ads (a process which is completely out with our control), until it went live, as we hadn't used it before. However, had we known that it would've caused some members the distress and inconvenience it has, then we would've given prior notice, so please accept our apologies for that:)

Yeah, I'm not shaving down there, not with winter on the way. And Mrs. P does my head every 4 weeks, whether it needs it or not. Bit depressing how the clippers go silent when they pass over the top of my head though. :(
