black ash..partial sand and refinish?

I have some an/k speakers in black ash.
Sound excellent but not my fave colour.

Now i realise i can't sandncompletely.

But could i partially sand, leaving the low points black and the high points lighter?
And the restain in a rich color, to have a sort of streaky dark grainynaffect.
Maybe a reddish wood tone.

Anyone done this?

What you need to bare in mind is the veneer would probably have been only .5mm thick when applied to the cabinets and then sanded by the manufacturer so will be quite a thin layer. If you sand them carefully you will take the surface off but will be left with a black filled grain effect, could look very classy with a mahogany or rosewood stain and then lacquered with a good quality water bourn varnish. Guitar manufacturers have been using this technique for many years.
