Just thought I'd share this with anyone thats remotely interested...
I bought a pair of Mansfield cabinets a few weeks back, they were in pretty poor shape but still sound enough to work withhttps://i.imgur.com/pa9yCPYl.jpg
so a little bit of joint glueing and cramping was required
https://i.imgur.com/8XUkRZnl.jpg
then fabricate some new plywood baffles
https://i.imgur.com/O7xkeAul.jpg
now glued & sanded so laminating the cabs with a high gloss olive wood
https://i.imgur.com/YazwB5el.jpg
cabs with new baffles fitted
https://i.imgur.com/m6WnQMRl.jpg
now fully clad in olive wood and the original black beading re fitted
https://i.imgur.com/K8gTs2bl.jpg
fabricated some grille surrounds
https://i.imgur.com/xGGQuqpl.jpg
fitting new crossovers
https://i.imgur.com/bQdJnwLl.jpg
fitting 12" golds

not far off now

grilles fitted

Just the badges to fit (still in the post) but quite chuffed with how they look, giving the Mansfield/Lancaster a more contemporary look.
I have to say I'm thrilled with the sound of these, I think the extra thick 1 1/2" front baffle combined with the laminate has given the old cabinets a lot more rigidity, well worth the effort:cool:
Just superb work Rodger, thanks for posting this.
I agree that it brings them up to date cosmetically. I think I'd prefer a full-face black grille rather than the little round one just over the driver though, but that's nit-picking I know.

Nice job Roger.
I agree with Martin about the grilles though.
(by the way, I wanted to buy those Chatsworth boxes you had on ebay the other day, but they got too dear :))

They look stunning. I'd love the skill to be able to do something like that.

They look really good :) (also agree regarding grills though)
Great work and photos Roger, thanks for sharing.

top quality workmanship and nice grain pattern! Not so keen on gloss finish though!
Beautiful work. The Mansfields were designed to be sealed for both the 12" and 15" HPD but the Lancaster was ported when the 12" Monitor Gold was used.

Is it a formica type laminate, or a tru-wood type pre-finished?

Beautiful... Very professional.
I know exactly how they sound, totally magical.
Thanks for posting

Thanks for the kind comments everyone, interesting regarding the grilles though, I will probably fabricate some new full length grilles to see how they look :hmm:

Yes its a true wood veneer that is bonded onto laminate backing and pre finished with a high gloss phenolic resin for durability

Thanks for the info Frank, I was initially thinking about front porting these but I like the tight bass these currently have, In your experience would porting make much of a difference ?

If you are happy I'd stay where you are, the 12" MG(not the 12R(rubber) has a Fs of 49hz and worked well in the Lancaster but without knowing how your driver has aged I'd leave it be and be content ;-)

Stunning. Congratulations
Those badges look mint.
Mind me asking where you got them from Roger? And how do they fix on?

Those are available on ebay, but the price is extortionate: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-size-2-MINT-TANNOY-lightning-badges-badge-logo-emblem-STOCK-LOW-Grade-A/152668913691?hash=item238bc6c01b:g:OqoAAOSw0cZZlyg V:rk:18:pf:0
I bought some a few years ago for about £17!

That's a bit pricey. £4 for postage too!

Yes thats the place I got them from, genuine Tannoy badges apparently. I got the cheaper "grade c" ones that had the rear pins missing and then used double sided tape to fix them on.
Well they look great, might have to get some despite the price.

Actually, against your choice of cabinet finish I think the gold badges may look a bit lost.
Perhaps something more modern might suit better? Like these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-stick-on-TANNOY-badge-badges-logo-good-condition-246137-/162905355698

You're right. Good spot.
Super nice old school & modern all in one
Super finish and I think your old school badge is “the ones” especially since it’s Tannoy gold
I to would prefer the full front cover “grill”, but hey I’m old school
Great post really inspirational
Great job and certainly an option/inspiration for my Tannoy project
