View Full Version : Broken Big Toe ??

Ninanina

I don't know but I think I might have broken my right big toe... nightmare

I slipped on the bottom stair last night and it made my toe double over and it's soooo painful. It's also a very strange colour at the moment and I can't really walk on it

It must be an age thing I reckon..

I'll see how it goes tonight but might have to visit my, so called, "Walk-In" Centre tomorrow... I think I'll call it the "Hobble-In" Centre actually

Been using ice and pain killers to relieve the pain a bit

Get it checked promptly Bev. Strange as it may seem, foot injuries can be dangerous.

Exactly,

peripheral injuries need to be treated urgently. Hopefully, it is just bad bruising but better to get it assessed ASAP.

Thanks for your concerns...

However I'm pretty sure they don't do anything if, indeed, it is broken; it's a bit like broken ribs, they can't actually do anything for them

It's certainly painful and I have a fairly high pain threshold

It's a very odd colour at the moment

I must be getting old I reckon....

That's the potential issue. Bloodvessels can be damaged and local circulation compromised leading to nasty problems.

Don't think A & E is the right place Al.. I'll leave it until tomorrow and go to my local centre.. I'm sure I will be fine ;)

Just as Geoff says. Maybe they can't actually do anything with it, but it still needs checking out.

Must admit when I saw the thread title my first thought was she's dropped her purse on it. Wouldn't have happened if she'd shelled out for the 1.7's :D

Tip for your hospital visit: take a book with you.

Big toes broken can cause lots of issues if not sorted, balance/walking etc can really be affected. Get it looked it properly, ASAP. So sod the walk in centre, it needs to be A&E/hospital & x-ray’d etc

Other toes are like you said, strap em up & forget about them. Can’t do that with big toes usually...!

Do it.

It's not unheard of for a little knock to lead to the loss of a toe........or a foot.........or a limb..........or even a life!

A bit of Googling and you'll probably find what I'm talking about.

As the sort of accident prone person who puts visits to doctors and hospitals off as long as possible, I have to point out I'm still alive complete with all extremities.

A n e is the right place for it. Your balance comes from your big toe, being set straight is critical. As someone who broke his, and had to have it reset weeks later after a kickboxing accident' I'd advise you to get it seen. You're unlikely to have broken it without a direct impact to something hard, probably dislocated or soft tissue damage. But all the same get it looked at.

You should have had that bang on the head seen to though :DHow did you know about that? I assume you mean the time I missed my stop and jumped off a Routemaster doing 30 mph and got a little bump. Managed to get to the bar where I was meeting people ok. Head was stuck to the pillowcase the next morning though. Still got a bald patch there now :)

A doctor would have advised you to leave the pillow attached until the wound healed. But they don't live in the real world do they?

BEV,

I'm a foot specialist so listen carefully. IT IS IMPERATIVE YOU GET WEIGHT BEARING X-RAYS! You are LEGALLY ENTITLED to a copy of your X-rays, so ask for a copy. I would counsel a weight bearing lateral and DP view, alongside a non-weight bearing oblique. I'm happy to assess your injuries if you can get some photo's of your X-rays. I see X-rays every day. Tomorrow I'm doing some consulting work looking over X-rays.

Regards

A

PS Don't panic, the foot is a pretty robust and well engineered piece of kit.

Yep, the guys are right Bev, the big toe is very important to the way you walk and balance so make sure it is treated properly.

I busted one of my metatarsals a couple of years ago just by walking down 2 steps and my foot twisted sideways on the bottom step. Went straight to A & E and had it X-Rayed immediately, the technician sad it was a classic "Dancer's injury" which I wore with pride for 8 weeks while it healed. Imagine that, a fat old fart like me having an exotic bust bone to brag about LOL

I broke mine but I never considered going to emergency. Or the vet. I didn't think they could do anything for it. Just drank some brandy to dull the pain and had the day off work. It hurt to walk on for a few weeks but then it was okay.

Well I've been to the 'hobble-in' centre..

It looks like I've done a right number on my toe as it's broken in three places but luckily the other toes are ok which they said is unusual for this type of break. It's the first thing I've ever broken

I've now got a really sexy massive boot thingy to wear for two weeks so no driving and have a follow up appointment in two weeks time... nightmare :mental:

Thanks so much for your comments and offer Andrew

They didn't take a weight bearing X-ray, just one with foot flat and another with it on the side view :)

I did ask for a copy of my X-ray, as the breaks are pretty impressive looking!, but they said they can't supply them which I thought a bit strange but I didn't question it

Do you think it's worth going back and asking again for a copy Andrew ?

I'm also glad to hear the foot is pretty robust as well :)

Yes it's worth getting a copy, probably cost you a tenner. Call the access to medical records dept, all hospitals have one. I need to know which bone you've broken. I'd have considered getting it fixed with a "K" wire to maintain joint alignment. You may have some problems with the propulsive phase of gait when you get older, I'm just finishing off some consulting work on a medico-legal case which sounds very similar to what you've done. Non-weight bearing is ok, probably an air cast walker you've been dispensed .Keep me posted.

Bone heals in 6-8 weeks, depending upon your health, immune status, skeletal health, and other things like drinking/smoking. Your already 10-15% healed. Make sure you have good bony alignment on the X-ray and ask about the possibility of it being pinned.

Thanks for the information Andrew. I will definitely ask them about the need for pinning it when I see them next week.. :)

Do you think I could get rid of the boot next week and just let it heal for the 6-8 weeks without it ?

I used to drive with my leg in plaster after Achilles tendon surgery and when I busted a fibula. It would no doubt be illegal now, it was a long time ago :).

I did try Geoff but the boot is just too wide so I hit both pedals

My car is automatic so if I'd broken the left one there would be no problem

Apparently as it's now on my records if I drove I would not be insured anyway..

The boot is off and I can drive again :yay:

Saw a lovely lady in the fracture clinic today and she said to leave the boot off as and when the pain would allow. The strange thing is she said it would do my toe more good to walk on it, with care, than have it in the boot which surprised me

So no problem driving for short journeys and I will walk on it as and when I can as well but if it gets too painful I will put the boot back on to sort of rest it if necessary

No more taxis for me :D
