I do some woodturning , This is my latest creation,

Small salad bowl made from walnut and finished with walnut oil ( Squeezed )

That is a beautiful bowl, and exactly my taste. Is this a hobby you could make a bit of money from? I for one would buy something like that, and walnut is my favourite wood. :)

As to making money I would say NO unless you are one of the turning elite , I have sold some items but being realistic what would you price the bowl as , It starts with the cost of the blank £25 and moves on what price when ? My woodworking workshop is at least £10K plus :eek:

I know it sounds stupid, but I've looked at that blank over and over and just can't see that bowl in it, if you know what I mean? It really is amazing that you can make something so smooth and clean cut out of that rough old lump.

Good Idea Al. I did a bit of wood turning at school and thought it very enjoyable and therapeutic. Alas i have not had the chance to do it since, and i doubt i will now, but would enjoy a walkthrough.

Really nice work Al, glorious colour too. I loved turning wood but not done it for years. I made this fruit bowl at school in 1978 or 9, can't remember exactly. Nice to have hand made items that you can look back on .

I made my mum 2 copper ash trays when I was about 10 yo at school , I still have them now 53 years later :)

It was part of my O level course. I made the bowl, a coffee table and some salad servers. We had a choice of designs but the teacher encouraged us to personalise things. God knows what happened to the table and the servers but I rescued the bowl when we cleared my parents house.
I still like using wood but not much opportunity now, I did veneer an old turntable plinth this year and I'm currently bringing my speaker cabs back to their former glory.

Wow, I didn't realise lumps of wood cost that kind of money, but then you're not likely to find a walnut tree while out walking the dog.

Agreed, it's hard to put a price on hand-made stuff, as what you've made is unique and even you couldn't make one the same no matter how hard you tried.

I will say it deserves to be displayed well - don't let your 'guests' chuck their car keys in it when you have one of those parties :D

A good starting point would be the cost of the materials plus an hourly rate for yourself. I've no idea how long something like that takes to make, but if you can make a bit from something you love doing, that's a good thing. Most hobbies just keep costing money.

that is a stunning piece of work....I'd like to see the stage by stage making, fascinating work....I think my arm could easily be twisted to buy something of this quality...
