Stan,
just wondered if I could use a Dorado to power my innous zen mini mk2 streamer?
are you able to supply different size plugs.
it is 12v dc center positive but the plug measures 5.5mm in diameter.
thanks

The existing Dorado design is mainly aimed at the DACs, phono amps, and headphone amp that I have released over the years. One reason for that is that I first want to test the commercial waters with a new concept and see if users find it suitable and beneficial or not. The other reason is that the higher the amperage of the equipment, the more "beefie" the mains connected PSU needs to be.
So I am working on another design for things that are not my own products, and need anything up to say 2A of current. It will be connected to the mains via the existing power supply of whatever you are currently using, and a set of adapter plugs are part of the package.

Stan,
I reckon its worth a go on the the server (1.5a draw) ...linear psus are 400 quid for that implementation.
ive been toying with the idea of going back to battery ....many moons ago you helped me go off the grid-so to speak!
if the dorado is 12v dc but done really well...im in!
Rpi's are higher at about 2.5/3amp so wont be any use there alas. There is a market for that too tho. 5v too..

I'd be interested in 5V Dorado too for my Raspberry Pi's.
I run two old Model B Pi's in different rooms. Both have attached Wolfson Audio Cards which feed via a digital coaxial lead to a Creek 50CD Dac in the lounge and also to my Caiman SEG in the bedroom. It is possible to run them via a 5V 1amp supply
The lounge Pi is currently fed by a 5V 2amp Ifi iPower supply. The bedroom Pi and SEG use one of those Chinese Linear 5V + 15V supplies to supply the Pi + SEG.
Any thoughts on whether a potential future Dorado 5V would work with and improve either the Chinese Linear job and iFi iPower supplies for my Pi's

From playing about, the RPi can be anywhere from 1A to 2.5A, depending on what hardware boards are bolted onto the main board. But for best sound the better audio boards have a separate DC voltage input. One of the reasons for that is that the RPi consists of a noisy digital circuit that even the best linear PSU can't cure completely. So by inserting a clean supply directly into the audio PCB on the RPi a lot of the noise from the main PCB etc is bypassed.
I am working on something, thanks to the help of someone who has lent me his RPi and audio boards to play with. So stay tuned...

I have been listening to a Dorado with a Bushmaster MKII this last few hours, just to make sure that the Dorado is a good match for it. That also gave me the chance to check out the functionality of a firmware mod that goes with this combination. The good news is that the combination actually works, and works extremely well. Bass is now very much more solid and firm. Vocals are clearer. I need to do some tidying up of some of the firmware code before I can get back to the listening test this evening.
Is my understanding correct that the Dorado psu needs to be powered/connected to a linear psu and that the stock psu that originally came with the SEG will not work with the Dorado?
StanleyB

The SEG upgrades are based on using it at 15V, and preferably a linear one at that. The stock PSU is not a linear PSU.
The Dorado can be bought with a very low cost linear PSU charger that can produce a 12V or 15V output that is suitable to energize the Dorado. Or alternatively you can use your own linear 12V or 15V power supply.

When I get the Dorado im hoping to try it with a Stan modified seg/standard seg and a caiman mk2.
my thinking is the dorado is like a fancy battery supply-super caps holding a reserve of power like a hydro electric system....doesn't matter what the river feeding it is like, just that the loch is full of water to run down the mountainside to drive the turbines...if that makes sense!
its quite an exciting new take on power supplies....will post my impressions on what it does both with cans and a full rig.

Good stuff Tony, interested to hear how you get on.
Need to get over for a listen, sounds like you’ve took quite a step up.
Computer power supplies can be funny things.
The normal operating current can be a specific value, but on powering up it charges it’s power factor controller capacitors, which can cause a current inrush of far more amps.
Which is why you need a beefier supply than what the specs might tell you.
Anyways, welcome to ‘propa’ computer audio. :)

If you can charge up the Dorado with your original 12V PSU, if it has a higher current output than the charger I can supply with it, then it is well worth giving it a go. I have tried it on the phono preamps that I used to sell, and I was amazed how much of an upgrade in sound I got.
Money back guarantee as usual if it doesn't work for you, but be prepared for a big grin on your face.

If I've already had my SEG supercapped will the Dorado provide any further benefit? I'd be using it with a 15v MCRU linear PSU which I bought for the supercap upgrade, so I'm hoping that will still work.

The Dorado has to be heard and experienced in action before you get the idea behind it. I remember when I first demonstrated it, nobody took it serious when I showed it. But that all changed when I switched the SEG on to let listeners judge for themselves. And with my no nonsense money back guarantee you won't be left with an unwanted item if you are not 110% satisfied.

big upgrade to seg,now waiting for the new seg30 firmware upgrade,i use it with th a 15v linear psu,i seem to be hearing things that i have never heard before or were not as clear in the music mix
I got my Dorado and SEG-30 firmware this morning and left them running during the day. I have been powering my SEG from a 12V Tracer LiFePO4 battery, which I also use to power a pair of Temple mono blocks.
First impressions with the Dorado/SEG-30 combo set at 15V and powered by a 16V switching PSU are very good - more open sound, better separation of instruments, detail I had not heard before, more controlled bass... As before it sounds best to me when the SEG is set to one "flash" compared to three flashes, but the latter now sounds more open than it did before.
I then tried the Dorado set at 12V and compared it against the 12V battery. Frankly I could not tell any discernible difference. This is still a very good result since the battery costs about 3 times the Dorado/PSU combination. So for me, the 15V (and probably the SEG-30) is making the biggest difference which means I'll have to try Stan's superclock/supercaps upgrade next...
I'd love to have something similar to power my RPI 3+ instead of from the USB output of a 5V LiIon battery.

The 12V setting on the Dorado is for the Caiman MKII and the Bushmaster MKI & MKII ( I am still fine tuning the firmware for each if those). At 12V the SEG is not firing on all cylinders. At 12V on a battery things get even worse when used with the Dorado. On a battery with a low ampere per hour discharge rate the 12V battery is just not fast enough in its ability to supply energy to the Dorado for the Dorado to do its stuff. So the Dorado doesn't get activated properly when used with a 12V battery.

Hi StanleyB. My Dorado is en route. I was going to use it with the supplied PSU for my Caiman II GFU. I also have a Hynes 15V supply available. Could I use this, or does the Dorado negate any differences in upstream PSU?
Cheers, Simon.
I just got the SEG-30 firmware chip and dorado.
Just trying the firmware upgrade chip out on my Caiman II and massive WOW...
It keeps what I love and prefer about the Caiman II (tonality and bass and smooth undistorted treble) and adds more definition, clarity, ambienc and scale.... wow, just WOW!
Listening right now and it is making it hard for me to type this on my iPad.
AND YET I HAVE STILL TO TRY OUT THE DORADO!!!

I personally don't recommend that the Dorado is used with a switched mode power supply, which is what I normally sell the standard Bushmaster and Caiman DACs with. But some people have given it a try with the SMPS on the Bushmaster and Caiman MKII, with no ill effects. I do offer a linear PSU to go with the Dorado, and that is definitely the absolute minimum to use if you have an SEG.
The reason I mention not to use the switched mode PSU with the Dorado is because some of the micro detail in the high frequency are masked by SMPS noise. Mind you, many people would probably not be listening out for detail at that sort of low level.
If the Hynes is a linear PSU, then give that a try with the Dorado.

If it is the Caiman MKII that you got, then you can use it at 12 or 15V. Some people say it sounds better at 15V. It won't damage the Caiman MKII since that it was designed to be used at 12 and 15V.

I've just ordered my Dorado and I'll see what it does to the SEG in a day or two :)
If I have a 12v regulated LPSU feeding a 12v Netgear switch (for the network), would the Dorado set to 12v work in between those two, or does it require a component with the firmware to do anything useful? I can obviously experiment, but I don't want to break anything. I've discovered the quality of the switch is important for my Bluesound Node 2, although it makes almost no difference to my Oppo BDP103.

Try the info at http://www.homehifi.co.uk/S/tc-7320%20qa.htm first. It will take at least two minutes before the LED might start to come on slowly. And then it can take another 30 minutes before it ever makes it to green.

I hate repeating myself, but I am having to. The SEG should be used at 15V with the Dorado.
I think that I am going to change the sales option on my site, thereby forcing everyone to buy the optional charger for the Dorado, whether they need it or not. The charger will give you 15V if you don't have a 15V power supply.
The 12V option on the Dorado is for the Bushmaster and the Caiman MKII.
The Dorado has to be plugged in to the DAC directly.
I posted this review to the other Dorado thread here late last night but on reading this thread I think perhaps it's better posted here. Mods please feel free to delete either of them if considered to be inappropriate double posting.
I fitted the SEG 30 chip today and also installed the Dorado. I now use my “Chinese” 15v LPSU to power the Dorado which then powers the SEG releasing the much better LongDog MCRU 15v LPSU to power the Capella. Prior to the arrival of the Dorado it was the other way around. I left things a few hours to warm up before any listening,
Anyway, despite suffering the tail end of a head cold the improvement the Dorado brings to the table is IMO immense.
Earlier in the day I had a quick listen to Thea Gilmore on CD through amp and speakers. My first thoughts were “clarity”. The music just seems so “clean” with a much larger dynamic range. A bit like back in the day playing the half speed master version of your favourite vinyl album compared to the standard pressing. Simply more of everything and more musical.
Earlier this evening I put a DVD movie through - I had to reduce the volume from my normal position because the bass was so powerful!
I posted this in another "Dorado thread" here yesterday but on reading through this thread I think maybe my review is better here. Mods, feel free to delete either if considered an inappropriate double post.
I’m currently streaming my favourite iPhone playlist so I know it well and listening with Beyer Dynamic DT990 600 ohm headphones (it’s late) driven by the Capella. Not the easiest ‘phones to drive properly. But they have never sounded better. This is what they should sound like but previously have come up a bit short in the all important “foot tapping” area. The dynamics are truly impressive. Bass is incredibly deep and controlled yet the really fine background detail like snare drums or shakers is not drowned out - these aspects of the mix have more clarity than pre-Dorado. There is no over emphasis of any particular instrument or frequency. Tracks I know well sound the best I’ve ever heard on my system. Clearly, some of the improvement listening through the Beyers will be down to the LongDog LPSU replacing the "Chinese" one driving the Capella but I'd heard all of these differences earlier through the Crofts/Epos M22i's.
TBH I am finding it difficult to describe the finer points of the music because I keep getting dragged back to just listening. It’s a big bold statement but the addition of the Dorado really does allow you to just listen to the music and not the kit.
I have no idea what the little box is doing or how it works but at less than £100 including the SEG 30 it’s arguably the best, most cost effective upgrade ever.

My SEG runs off a 15v LPSU already. I was just wondering if the Dorado had any wider uses or if it should solely be used for the DACs? I have several 12v items I could try it on, but no idea if it would work or provide any benefit. If that's not advisable then I'll stick to using it on the SEG.
Edit: I've quoted the post I was replying to now.

I myself have not tried it with anything other than on the DACs, some phono preamps that I sold, and the Capella HPA. One of the reason for that is that the Dorado is in its Version One state. So it has some safety circuitry that limits the current flow between input and output. That current limiter will trip in if the current load exceeds its set value.
I am however working on some prototypes to extend the principle and get people to try it out in other applications. Best that you email me about this so that I can put your name down as a potential beta tester. As long as you don't double cross me like some did with the Dorado prototype. I hate spending ££££ on research, only to see people copy me to make a quick buck.

Thanks Stan, I'll drop you an email. The limits of my DIY skills are plugging a PCI card into a computer, so even switching firmware chips in the SEG is making me slightly nervous. I won't be disassembling anything - at least not deliberately!

Oh goody. They are bound to sound better if they cost a couple of grand :hmm:
FWIW - it took about 5 minutes for the Dorado to power up to “green led” status on first use yesterday. I turned everything off at the end of the listening session (LSPSU & Dorado). Today, on powering on the LSPSU the Dorado went to green in less than a minute. That suggests to me the Dorado circuit is able to store a huge amount of power for instantaneous delivery. Just saying.

I designed the Dorado in such a way that it stores any unused energy. The energy will dissipate over days. The main reason behind the idea of storing the energy is to improve the speed to get a fully charge state. And that in turn also reduces the carbon footprint.
The 12V setting on the Dorado is for the Caiman MKII and the Bushmaster MKI & MKII ( I am still fine tuning the firmware for each if those). At 12V the SEG is not firing on all cylinders. At 12V on a battery things get even worse when used with the Dorado. So the Dorado doesn't get activated properly when used with a 12V battery.
Just to be clear - I compared using the Dorado at 12V supplied by the 16V PSU against my battery at 12V. I have not tried supplying the Dorado from the battery at all since I really wanted to try the SEG at 15V, where the Dorado has made a great difference.

should get mine in the next couple of days...will see if it plays nice with a innous zen mini mk2.
Stan suggested i try the zen on battery power...he wasn't wrong-another incremental gain across the board!
It has been a bit of a busy weekend, but I managed to get some time to further listen to the SEG-30 and Dorado upgrades to my Caiman MkII DAC.
A bit of background. I run both a Caiman MkII and a kit version of the Audio Note DAC2.1. Both have different presentations on offer, the Caiman has more resolution and precision and the Audio Note has more tone and ambience. Having said that, for a solid state DAC, the Caiman MkII from stock (Rev 1.3 and no upgrades) has a great deal of tonality and body, to a point where it is within reach of me no longer justifying the Audio Note, and I can look towards downsizing to just one DAC.
Recently I have changed from Volumio on the Raspberry Pi to Volumio through an Asus Tinker Box - similar to the Raspberry Pi, but with a improved sound, particularly as the built in regulators are better and its USB does not share the same bus as the Ethernet. The Tinker Box is not without its technical difficulties, including an incompatibility with my Musical Fidelity USB-to-Coax converter, so I am not yet able to compare directly the Caiman MkII updates with the Audio Note.
The rest of the system is a self designed and built pair of 300B SET amplifiers with interstage transformers (no decoupling capacitors in the signal path) - the design has been carefully optimised and I would equate its performance to being world-class. Highly transparent, involving, yet with great bass, tone and body. The loudspeakers are a pair of Q Acoustics 3050 floor standers - brilliant value for money, doing all the stuff you would expect at way above their price range.
The first upgrade to the Caiman MkII was the SEG-30, which was fairly easy to do. My advice is to add a small bit of masking tape over the pozidriver bit, in order to reduce any scratching when undoing the screws - to keep the nice look of the DAC. Some gentle coaxing of the top revealed the gorgeous interior of the Caiman MkII.
24400
My advice is to follow the instructions in the firmware area on the Beresford website, but this photo should help to give you a good idea of where the firmware chip is behind the blue LEDs. A few alternating coaxes of the chip at either end of its DIL socket, with a small flat bladed screw driver, will easily allow you to take out the chip.
I also took the photo to make sure that the replacement chip is aligned in the same direction as the old one. That and placing the chip on the table in the same alignment helps. The whole process is not difficult, and you will see below that the minimal effort translates into an inordinately huge upgrade.
Yes, the upgrade is HUGE. I would go as far as to say that the upgrade on the Caiman MkII is the most significant ever. What it does is it keeps the same tonal performance of the Caiman MkII (which I preferred over the Caiman SEG), and greatly improves the timing and tunefulness of the music. This is a MASSIVE musical upgrade to the DAC. This is mainly due to two things - 1. it improves the detail and edges of the sound, without introducing any distortion, and 2. it improves the coherence of the sound. That coherence adds delicacy and a sense of correct placement to the harmonics and start/stop of musical notes, while also improving on the intelligibility of different instruments. Sound stage also increases, with better resolving of instruments at the far left and right (without creating any hole in the middle of the stage).
My first choice of music was deliberate. Brendon Benson's Metarie is a very tuneful song that delicately begins with guitars and male and female voices, with further instruments building up the mix and drama along the way. It is also nicely recorded without being a super-audiophile recording that would distract from isolating the capability of the DAC upgrade. This first track was conclusive, and the effector the firmware upgrade will immediate for you (no warm-up required).
You know how a great system makes it difficult to play music and read at the same time, because the music takes over your concentration? Well this £8 further achieves that. This upgrade is a no-brainer - if you haven't done it, JUST DO IT.
The Dorado itself is a bit more difficult to evaluate and write about. Mainly because, and correct me if I am wrong, it seems to require some warming up and running in.
24401
I have had two listening sessions with the Dorado, one at five minutes after charging, and another at one day after charging. Between the two listening sessions the Dorado's impact seems to evolve.
The improvements, SO FAR, are quite different from the firmware. What it seems to do is work on the tonality and presence of the music. The bass has more power and texture, the treble is more rounded. The first listening, minutes after charge-up, and the treble seemed too reticent, after one day it has opened out a bit more and I suspect that after further charging it will open out further - already it gives a more turntable-like presentation to the sound. So far, the Dorado makes the Caiman MkII into a beefier sounding DAC, which is a good thing. From a timing perspective, the Chinese linear supply on its own with the SEG-30 update was astonishing; whereas adding the Dorado gives more tone, and still very good timing, the SEG-30 on its own had better timing and transparency. Overall the Dorado does make the Caiman MkII into a more expensive sounding DAC, and further running-in may yet further improve the timing and transparency.
My overall thoughts are that:
1. The SEG-30 update is absolutely essential, particularly in terms of increased musicality.
2. The Dorado puts a luxurious jacket on it.
3. 1 and 2 work nicely together.

Andrew, do you need a linear psu to power the dorado or can it be used instead of/as well as? I too have Caiman mk2 but currently just use the standard wall plug which it came with.
Just ordered a Dorado to go with my Bushmaster II.
The SEG-30 will slot nicely into my modded SEG.
Almost two for the price of one!

You can buy the Dorado with the low noise linear power supply charger to charge up the Dorado, and keep it topped up. If you already have a linear power supply that you are using with the Caiman then you can continue to use that. But if you don't have a linear power supply, then the one that can be bought together with the Dorado is an alternative option.

Thanks Stan, much appreciated.
I upgraded the SEG firmware and installed the Dorado PSU with charger tonight and one word. Astonishing!
Has to be heard to be believed. I'm gobsmacked.
Anyone considering these two upgrades should beg borrow or steal the dosh to buy them.
Thanks Stan.

I plumbed in the fettled seg with the new firmware and dorado yesterday.
Sat with my son last night for a few hours, we were both genuinely taken aback at just how much of an improvement they have brought.
Im using one of Stans power supplies with the dorado so no fancy linear supply BUT...Stan has enabled the dorado to be fed charge via this supply and still output 15v reaping all the sonic benefits.
I then plumbed seg/dorado into my av set up....boy oh boy-John Wick 2 the opening sequence with car crashes and fights!!!
Really rather special imho.
will endevour to get listening on cans to work out whats going on sonically.

The science behind how I designed the Dorado, and how it does what it does is complex. But what matters is that it delivers the goods Far too many people out there only know how to copy things. I am kind of proud of myself to have once again made another breakthrough in the design of a product that is giving so many music lovers great pleasure :).

Couple of things I'm noticing is that the bass is really well defined and low.
I'm using Spendor S3/5R2s which are just bookshelf speakers but the bass now is pretty deep compared to before the upgrades.
Also there's clarity or more of it than before, especially with voices and the sound is even more analogue sounding than it was before.
My main digital source is an old-ish Denon streamer, a DNP 720-AE, which sounded fantastic with Stan's SEG but it's sounding even better now.
Probably the best £70 odd that I've spent on my hifi.

I had a look at the order list and couldn't help noticing that some of my sales were going to places where I know specialists take things apart to have a look inside to see how they are made. So expect to see some over engineered copies at hugely inflated prices.
Well said stan not before time!we know who they are.
I installed 2 Dorados and firmware upgrades on my SEGs today and I’m delighted with the results. Everything sounds cleaner and more defined. Music sounds more three dimensional. Instruments have more sparkle to them. TV and DVD Dialogue is clearer and sound effects are more realistic.
I use Maplins CB radio linear power supplies. I had to tweak the trim pot in one of them to get the voltage high enough to turn the Dorado’s light green. Installing the firmware was pretty straight forward. Just take time and care with the legs on the chip and it’s fine. :-)
Well worth the upgrade. Thanks, Stan!
I too received my firmware upgrade chip and Dorado yesterday. All very easy to insert and set up. I let it 'burn-in' for a few hours and then settled back to listen to a few test tracks I always use to assess any difference in SQ.
I endorse all that's been said! An excellent upgrade. An increase in clarity across the whole audible spectrum -but especially noticeable at the treble end. Voices and instruments seemed to have moved further forward towards the middle of the room.
I have a CD player, Apple Extreme and Logitech Touch connected to my SEG. The upgrade certainly has breathed more life into the Touch - which I hadn't used for 6 months or more.
I have a Caiman and Bushmaster in a study connected to my Mac. Shall I upgrade there too I wonder?
Thanks Stan.

Stan, are there any benefits to using a higher quality linear psu with the Dorado or does the Dorado do all it has to do with whatever power is supplied (so long as it's within voltage tolerance obviously)

The Dorado doesn't need a higher quality linear power supply, but a low noise linear power supply, which is what is offered as an optional extra on my ordering page. I have power supplies ranging from £1.00 to £300 odd, and I have tried them all with the Dorado without any issues. At the end of the day it is the Dorado that is powering your equipment, not the power supply that is connected to the mains. The mains connected power supply merely keeps the Dorado topped up with energy. So spending big on a PSU is not going to reward you with a better performance, which is already stratospheric with the Dorado in circuit.

I have been using the Dorado a while now and thought I would let it bed in before commenting. I also took the step of removing the Dorado and listening to the system again without it.
The results are not really what I expected. There is no question that the Dorado further improves on the performance of the SEG. However, I was not expecting the sound to be leaner. I have determined that this change in SQ is due to the removal of noise mush. The bass is clearly now much more extended, but it is the quality of the bass that has improved most. The texture of acoustic bass instruments is now better resolved. Transients are also improved. My Maggies are very good in dealing with transients and this aspect is now even better. Perhaps the biggest difference though is a further improvement in smoothness. Even more analogue sounding, especially in conjunction with Audivarna using upsampling to DSD.
I am now waiting eagerly for Stanley to produce a new DAC with a built in linear power supply and the Dorado technology all in a single box. Ideally, the new DAC would also have balanced XLR outputs. I reckon there would be a huge demand for such a unit amongst forum members, particularly if it could come in around 350 quid or thereabouts!
Geoff
The 12V setting on the Dorado is for the Caiman MKII and the Bushmaster MKI & MKII ( I am still fine tuning the firmware for each if those.
I am confused here. The Bushmaster MKII requires 11,5V to 15V input your website and the device itself states. Then why would I set the Dorado at 12V when powering my Bushmaster MKII?
StanleyB
04-11-2018, 08:25
You can set it to 12V or 15V. But quite a few people bought a 12V linear PSU over the years. And since the Dorado can be used with any of those linear PSU, the Dorado has a 12V option so that the LED can show when the Dorado is charged up.
Ok thanks., I thought you meant that the Bm MKII should always be powered with 12V.
I will hook it up @15V later today. Am breaking in the BMII-20 firmware upgrade right now.
Is the Dorado designed to be left powered on or does it prolong its lifespan when it’s turned off after each listening session?

The Dorado is so new, I haven't got any long term operating experience on the benefits of leaving it on al the time, or switching it off when not in use. I myself switch mine off.

Hi,
Just had to post re the above service i received from Stan when purchasing a Dorado, low noise psu charger and BMII-20 for my Bushmaster2.
Enquired about it yesterday morning. Invoice by lunchtime and delivered today!!!
What other manufacturers can offer this sort of service.
Pm'd Stan this evening to say I would check out tomorrow but impatient me made the simple integration this evening and am currently enjoying the subtle impact it is so far making.
My BM2 had already been fully modded by Stan earlier this year (another quick turnaround) and was running off batteries so I thought it couldn't get any better!
Even after short listening the sound seems so much more detailed and full bodied. I predominately use headphones out of preference and I am already suitably impressed.
Very satisfied customer and can wholly recommend the Dorado.

Also just posting about my experiences---
As above, the service and support from Stan has been great and very much helpful (especially since I am not too well knowledgeable in Hi-Fi!)
Ordering was quick and painless, the shipping speed was ridiculously fast (Australian) and the items well packaged.
Coming from a Caiman MKII to the SEG and now as of 2 days ago the Dorado and SEG-30 Chip (I had the SEG-8 chip installed I think from memory) I honestly did not really think there would be much improvement as what I had was already awesome...
But the sound is now much clearer and it is noticeably easier to determine individual sounds and the soundstage seems to have expanded to the sides some more (I mainly play video games and movies, not much music).
Although the Missus couldn't tell the difference, I can and now know a new standard of listening that I cannot go back from.
Many thanks Stan, much appreciated, happy holidays to you all!

As a very delighted and hugely impressed user of your 12-15V Dorado for the SEG, I'm eagerly awaiting a 5V RPi version. Any view on when it's likely to become available? Also, do you anticipate that a standard switching (wall-wart) USB 5V PSU will be a suitable candidate for providing the RPi Dorado with power, given how it effectively decouples the power source from what arrives at the RPi? If so, I'd say you'd be onto a winner
Keep up the great work, Stan!

The idea is that the original RPi power supply is used to power the Dorado.
Hi all, and Stan especially.....hope this gets to the correct thread, not very good at this stuff,no hum!
Hello from sunny Dublin, have been into Beresford gear for a while now and really appreciate the sound. Have been running a SEG for one or two years now (forget) and thought I'd get me a stocking-filler this Xmas so had a word with the man who suggested the Dorado to complement the setup I have...no probs I thought, but, was not expecting the ENTIRE improvement in sound from a power supply. It is night and day.I was running off an ankaka thought as I was off the grid the improvement could only be small if at all,but it's Christmas huh?
I have been so gobsmacked it's absolutely delightful ,to hear details in stuff I am so used to critically listening to,and have never heard, and more than just extra detail but the musical presentation is just jaw-dropping.
I have an old arcam cd player which I love, but actually listen to streams and my own flac collection on a NAS and stream to a Chromecast. Ok, I'm a detail man, but hope in there I'm getting the musicality, but at 63 my best listening years may be behind me??Who cares, I've a huge smile on my ears today thanks mostly just to a selfish urge to treat myself as I have been Xmas shopping for a while now and just went for it on a whim....Thanks so much Stan, hope Brexit and stuff allows you to continue bringing this priceless joy to as many people as possible

Ive been very surprised with the sonic abilities of the google chrome cast audio utilising a good quality optical to the seg.
Reckon a 5v dorado feeding it would reap huge benefits....could be a blinding bang for buck streaming combo.
Rest assured when Stan gets time to get one developed and manufactured the raspberry pi mob and CCA users will form an orderly queue.

Reason I ask it the system is going to mostly be hidden in a server rack, I can however just make a 12v switching trigger unit to turn both items on from the mains. I can’t see an issue with that unless anyone else can?

I've emailed you Stan - but could I purchase your Dorado TC-7320 for an Auralic Aries Mini?
It looks like the TC-7320 Dorado supplies 15V - will this do the trick?
Thank you.
In the last month or so, the Dorado bright green light once it has charged has become pale green or even red when I switch-on my Caiman SEG. Has anyone else noticed this? It is as though it is struggling to deliver enough current to the SEG. I use the 15V output setting. It is fed by a 90W power supply. I usually leave it on all the time unless I am away for a long period.

It seems the issue with the light not coming on was nothing to do with the Dorado. A few minutes with a multimeter revealed the output from the PSU was only 12V so even on the 15V setting the Dorado could only generate 12V. I replaced the PSU with an identical one I had kicking around and all is now fine.

I am waiting for the metal case to arrive from the case manufacturer so that they can then be sprayed and the various texts printed on it. At this time of the year it is a bit of a struggle for small manufacturers like me to get production time slots for just a hundred units. The big boys tend to tie up the case etc manufacturers for weeks on end. So I end up having to show some patients and wait my turn.
