One of the best decks ever made as far as the sound is concerned. It's the matching deck to the Aiwa amp that I have, the 8700. I cam close to buying one, but funds prevented me doing that due to the mortgage on the flat that my then girlfriend decided to buy.

I’d best dig out a cassette tape then and give it a good clean .

So not so smart arse here thought “ I’ll do the belts meself.... Jesus!!
I have the service manual and it still looks impossible. A service centre said it took their engineer 5 hours !!

A friend of mine who is a truly gifted repairman and loves cassette decks the way I love turntables, serviced one of these once and said it was the most horrific experience of his life and never wants to see one ever again!

However, I’m a glutton for punishment so if you do change your mind about selling it, let me know as I’d be happy to buy it.

Yes its the tank like build and features like a back lit cassette slot that attract people to decks like this. Looking inside the different areas dont look easily accessible for servicing though.

I wouldnt go mad in terms of price and found that a late 90s early 2000s Denon suited me just fine. I have remote control, three heads and it sounds as good as I need given the limitations of an obsolete format

Servicing and a lack of parts puts me off anything older. I only dabble in the cassette medium so its not a format I would go all out on now.

You might like to delude yourself but it is officially in the museum of obsolete media. Yes it is capable of good results if you put your rose tinted specs/hearing aids on and think of pro decks and reel to reel equipment.

However its limitations and all that dolby malarkey mean that Currys dont sell them anymore or hadnt you noticed :)

I did the belts on my teenage yrs Triumph made (Currys -Hitachi made ) Cassette player . Part of a stack system they sold !
It wasnt a job I want to do again in a hurry either ,and despite me etting it up and running with some belt selection pack ,I have yet to record anything on it !
All my pre recorded cassettes are about goosed too ,so apart from feeling I have done a good job , I dont quite know what comes next !!

The Aiwa looks dead sexy mind . I have an old HMV stack I need to sell ,but its in my bookcase and I would love to just illuminate the meters just for effect and decoration . Looks are its best feature too unfortunately :eek:

Yeah do it for a bit of fun but you soon learn that pre recorded cassettes are goosed or need play trim away from the original deck. I dabble and have a bit of retro fun making my own recordings on TDK tapes. I like the ability to play tapes that turn up

I just like to see the meters light up and keep my TDK MA tapes factory sealed :D
