Borrowed a signal generator to test my system and inadvertently discovered I'm deaf as a post above about 12.5KHz :doh:

I'm not sure of the unit's calibration but my wife and children could clearly hear up to 17Khz. So even assuming the generator was 3KHz out (highly unlikely), and they could hear up to 20KHz, I'm still 4.5Khz down.

I guess that's 27 years in industrial maintenance for you despite being pretty careful to use hearing protection.

Thing is, I don't feel I'm missing anything, so what *am* I missing?

What sort of sounds are above 12KHz, on recordings or otherwise?

I have hearing aids but still love music ! They were going to fit me a pigs ear but in tests there was a bit of crackling

I wouldn't worry, but just so you know, Hidden Hearing and others do free tests. Your quack will refer you to a hospital test as well. However, all of these tests go to around 8 kZ only (which is pretty high).

Having suddenly lost half the hearing in my right ear as a direct and almost immediate result of my first (and last !!!!!) flu jab, I've had lots of tests. Oddly, even when it was at its worst, it didn't seem to unduly affect my enjoyment of my hifi (cans or speakers). My hearing is, regardless, age related, poor, but nothing yet has impaired my musical enjoyment.

If you are at around the 12.5 kZ (kilohertz; I forget the abbreviation), I'd just thank your lucky stars.

Wow, that's a shocking result from the flu jab, not be going for that again then. Glad to hear (sorry) musical enjoyment stays high in spite of failing hearing.

Yes, no matter where we are there are always worse off people.

When listening to the tones at 12KHz they were super high, squeaky and squeely so I don't think I'm missing much worth hearing but thanks for the encouragement Mike.

The answer is: Not a massive amount. But some. It's crap but what can you do, we all go deaf eventually.

The unfortunate 'effects' on hearing attributed to the flu jab may be coincidental and not due to the vaccination. Possibly just caused by something else.

I've had the jab every autumn for about fifteen years and not experienced any untoward effects at all. Neither have I had flu.

I started having it in my fifties, due to being prone to catching every bug about.

Flutes and clarinets are up there, really, that's surprising. 12KHz didn't sound like any woodwind to me, except maybe when my son had to learn the Eastenders theme tune on the recorder for school. You could charge folks not to hear that.

Yea, it's crap but there's a lot worse (losing your hearing that is, not EE repeatedly on the recorder, that's probably as bad as it gets).

Yes you will. Upper end hearing loss, unless extreme, has little effect on music enjoyment or perception of sound quality. I hear little above 10kHz, but can tell when tweeters are sounding rough at the top. The whole of the audio band, even that not audible, affects the sound heard.

I doubt the Tannoys will give anything above about 20Khz myself. So it doesn't really matter what's outside the audible band, it isn't coming out of the speakers.

What's the red to yellow differential on the chart? Does the red denote fundamentals and the yellow show harmonic output? Acoustic instruments can produce loads of harmonics.

Seems that even if they are not "audiophile" then they may still have a niche in giving those with hearing loss a chance of improving SQ by boosting the higher frequencies.

You can download plenty of frequency tests. It is best to test your hearing using headphones as these often have a more extended frequency range than speakers.

It is interesting to rotate your head left-right when listening to a tone generator to try and detect differences between each ear and also (perhaps?) the interactions between stereo speakers.

I can hear a tone at around 17Khz (albeit at a lower level) but I can detect a tone close to 20Khz when I move my head left to right. :scratch:

There are test CD's available that are damn useful (assuming you have a player). I have one, it's handy for checking speakers etc. It can also show you how your hearing is.

That's quite likely the limit of the speaker, Tannoys don't really go that high in the top end.

But don't stop shouting at them. Children today don't get shouted at anything like enough.

That's a very handy site :) 12,900 Hz is my limit on that, my teenage son max'd out at 18KHz.

Not in my case. I succumbed to my sister's insistence to have one and wished I hadn't. This was 3 1/2 years ago, and I haven't had flu since either. Flu jab together with pneumonia jab mid Saturday morning. Within two hours I was losing my balance and shortly after realised I couldn't hear much from my right ear. Consultants at hospital and my doctor were totally nonplussed but when my wife Googled it, she found a number of similar incidents. It did improve over the next 6 months or so, but was certainly 40% down at all my tests. Down on what, though, I've no idea !:) Maybe it was the pneumonia element? Who knows?

Sorry to hear about your hearing loss, but it is not uncommon for many medical procedures to have harmful effects. I contracted severe malaria whilst working in Malawi. I ended up in hospital four times and was put on an intravenous quinine drip. I eventually responded to treatment but it was a pretty toxic treatment. It affected my vision which showed up in an eyesight test a year after I was infected. Two years on, another eye test showed my eyesight to have improved significantly over the previous test. Probably back to pre-malaria levels. In any event, I don't need glasses yet, even for driving.

I hope that your hearing loss proves to be temporary and reversible.

Depends how you read the chart - it doesn't mean that when you are at age X you won't hear a certain high frequency, just that it will be less obvious than when you were younger.
The chart just indicates a kind of 'roll off' curve.

Also, although I definitely can't hear higher frequencies as well as I used to, my brain does quite a good job of adjusting the frequency balance so to me it isn't as obvious as the chart would suggest ;)

I've done a few online listening tests but they can be really deceptive. Only real test where it has shown up for me was the audiology one at Hospital - mainly because that involves a tester who doses out the different frequency tones at random so you have no idea what you are listening for and when.

I diagnosed myself, being deafer in my left ear for 30 years.

I attribute that to factory work when I was younger.
Had nothing to do with putting speakers on the floor, lying between them, and blasting them!

But, hasn't stopped my music enjoyment.

Bought a pair of ATC SCM19 speakers in March.
Also got the 40th Anniversary Edition of 'Crime of the Century.'

Throughout, was in a state of bliss.
Hearing the album presented in a way I'd never heard. The minute details where audible.
Embarrassingly, even shed a tear.

However, someone mentioned getting your ears cleaned as a system mod.
I think I'll do that next month!

Thanks for your sentiment, but my hearing is a bit cream-crackered; by age more than anything else. Was referred by doc. for hearing aids over a year ago but haven't yet taken this up. Everybody on the ball games courts can hear me shout and I ignore anybody who can't speak up ! Such is senile citizenship protocol.:lol: As long as my music thrills, all is well with the world.

I have used one of those high frequency mosquito deterrence devices. Don't know what frequency is used but I could hear it - and very annoying it is too.

If you listen to music you like and introduce a 12kHz low pass filter you will immediately notice the difference, irrespective of your response to a sine wave signal. I'd suspect you would hear the effect of a 15kHz filter as well. I can hear to a bit below 15k, can remember hearing to 20kHz using the Science museum gadget when young, but still want speakers to reach up to 20k.

Our ears have non-linear characteristics and were evolved for a purpose which was not listening to sine waves, more like survival. So these effects should be looked at as interesting characteristics rather than anomalies.

BTW I personally believe I can differentiate a 10kHz sine from a 10kHz square wave, which should not be theoretically possible if I can't hear even the second harmonic. If you try this keep the volume down, hearing damage can still result even if you can't hear anything at all!

GeoffNot had a scope/sound card on it but I wonder what sampling rate the tones are generated at?

I used an analogue sig genny for my test. To be fair at first I equalised peak amplitudes and in a thread way back on the 'Wam Serge told me I'd screwed up my method. I did try again using equalised power signals and the difference was a lot less, but still audible I thought.

Theoretically if I can't hear 15k then any square wave above 7.5k should sound the same as a sine wave. I've got posher equipment now so if I get a moment I'll try it again [emoji3]

It's a very sensitive part of our auditory spectrum so small differences should be easier to discern around this frequency. On top of this we can clearly hear the first and (possibly less clearly) the second harmonics so we really should be able to tell the difference. On top of this I've checked the sine and square at 4kHz and there is an appreciable difference between the amount of energy in the two samples. If I were to hazard a guess did you find the square wave louder? It has higher amplitude and RMS values than the sine, and the waveform is somewhat closer to a square wave and less similar to a sine wave than the 10kHz samples.

I have read that these online signal generators usually display high levels of distortion and noise. This one certainly does.

I've just had a go at a couple of online tests, with my AKG K550's plugged into my laptop. First test did a frequency sweep gradually moving up over the course of a minute, and you were supposed to click the mouse at the point where it becomes inaudible. to be honest, it all sounded a bit quiet, so I turned the sound up and off I went. It became inaudible at about 3.5kz :eek: I thought, that can't be good, I'll try another.

The next test included hearing a series of numbers spoken against a noisy background. The conclusion given at the end was that I may have hearing loss, and gave contact details for someone who presumably would charge an arm and a leg for some new ears.

At this point I hadn't heard any music playing (my defence), so when the next test I tried had Rick Astley singing, it was than that I realised that my headphones weren't plugged in properly and all my listening had been from my laptop speakers and through a rather expensive set of ear defenders. I'm not sure if I was relieved by this, or worried.

I think your post highlights that we don't all have 20-20 Khz hearing. I am fortunate in that my hearing is holding up pretty well as I age (better than the rest of me). Having less than perfect hearing does not necessarily reduce our listening pleasure, though it may influence our choice of hardware. Many people are cynical over full range driver speakers since many such drivers have a HF roll off above 15 Khz or even lower. However, if your HF hearing is reduced, does this matter.

I think many people do not have a sense about what a high frequency note sounds like. I am sure that many people would be absolutely shocked as to how high a 10 Khz tone sounds like.

I downloaded the nch tone generator some years back, and in my setup it was full of similar glitches to those you are reporting. An oscilloscope confirmed what I feared: rubbish software. And no response to my emails from the developer.

No such horrors from an old analogue signal generator.

It's all quite baffling. What Barry says makes perfect sense to me, and I've been aware of harmonics for a long, long time. Goes back to when I used to go on ride-outs with a friend, and when our bikes were running at a certain point in their rev ranges, a third note could be heard. Then if one of us accelerated or braked, the note would disappear.

Why then would manufacturers of full-range speakers not be all over this? Surely they would be aware of this. maybe they think that losing these harmonics is compensated by having the advantages of a single driver, whatever that is. (technical bods, feel free to weigh in here).

My own speakers each have two full-range units, complemented by a tweeter that runs from 10kHz to 25kHz (I'm told) so I should be ok. :)

Don't worry about it . If your above 55 it's completely normal . With age our HF hearing diminshes . I can hear to 14 k cycles and I could swear I'm hearing as I always have . Above 14 k all we have mostly are harmonics and even then most of the upper range of harmonics are lower the 14k cycles . If you can still hear a bright recording sounding bright your ok .

As a matter of fact my wife is 59 and can only hear to 8 k and even then she can hear subtle differences in the sound of my system when changing components

dont know how far up and down my full range ones go but its pretty good. i did have a graph once but seem to have lost it for now... supposedly pretty flat from 35 to 15k. certainly sound good.

Interesting as it all is, at the end of the day it's all numbers, and I doubt that missing the highest frequencies is a real barrier to our musical enjoyment. Apart from my rather dull sounding Pink Floyd remasters, which I posted about elsewhere, everything sounds fine to me. Even though bats can hear extremely high frequencies, I certainly don't envy them. And definitely not their diet which is mothy in the extreme. :(

My right ear now only goes to 5K, due to BTs insistence on my using a headphone which produced up to 131.5dB, this necessary when trying to identify bleeps in a noisy environment of 105dB.

Anyway I bought my Betas with the litigation money.

The brain adapts its software to what the transducers are doing, and the real musical info is centred around 1K, maximum intelligibility vocally and I think musically being commercial speech bandwidth; 300 - 3400Hz. Mostly above is 'sharpness'.

Borrowed a signal generator to test my system and inadvertently discovered I'm deaf as a post above about 12.5KHz :doh:

I'm not sure of the unit's calibration but my wife and children could clearly hear up to 17Khz. So even assuming the generator was 3KHz out (highly unlikely), and they could hear up to 20KHz, I'm still 4.5Khz down.

I guess that's 27 years in industrial maintenance for you despite being pretty careful to use hearing protection.

Thing is, I don't feel I'm missing anything, so what *am* I missing?

What sort of sounds are above 12KHz, on recordings or otherwise?

You really need to do these tests on good headphones. Did you use your speakers?

Using a laptop or computer and one of many available online audio clips would be sufficient.
