FS: QUAD ESL 63 Loudspeakers (refurbished by Quad in 2014)

I’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to sell my ESL 63s. They are in many ways the best speakers I have ever owned; their clarity, cohesiveness, scale and lack of colouration is simply sublime. However I just don’t get to listen to them as much as I’d like to. Positioning them optimally means they infringe upon the entrance to my 4.2m x 3.8m listening room, and as someone with cerebral palsy and walking difficulties this makes my access difficult.

They were serviced by Quad at Huntingdon in January 2014 where they replaced all panels at a cost of £1,037.66 (see invoice in last photo).

They are in good working order and excellent cosmetic condition and come complete with Stand & Deliver open-frame stands (worth around £125) which are essential for raising and tilting the speakers to ear height.

Priced at £795 including stands.

As I no longer have a car that’s big enough, the speakers will need to be collected from Glasgow. :)

Had 2 pairs of those in the last 30 years, first pair with the stand and deliver stands, the second pair with the Icici stands. For fully overhauled and in mint condition they are a bargain at the price, wish I had a room big enough to do them justice, GLWTS.

Thanks for your interest, Dominique, I tried to reply to your email but it didn't work (I think you need to turn on email contact in the Setting section of the Forum).

I appreciate your interest however I would prefer that the speakers are collected in person. Without the correct, original packaging, I would be concerned about them being damaged in transit, especially if being shipped abroad.

Yes I sell quite a bit of stuff on eBay, but for higher value items I generally prefer hifi forums as, with likeminded folk, there is usually less risk and hassle involved. However if there are no takers for these then I probably will have to put them on eBay...

TBH I'm surprised someone hasn't bitten my hand off yet for these, Alan! You'd be hard pressed to find a lifelike, transparent and uncoloured loudspeaker for £800...

PS - Scottish Independence hasn't yet happened folks, you can still cross Hadrian's Wall freely and collect these magnificent speakers from me without having to pay import tarrifs! ;)

They are rated as in the top 10 speakers of all time by Stereophile I think.

Location will be a part of it, as will their size/shape. Price is good so dont see that as an issue for a fettled pair with stands. Will go at some stage tho I'm sure. Not so many members up here

Bide your time, they will sell at that price, location for collection and size of vehicle to transport them is the problem, to anyone knowledgeable they’re a steal at the price, good luck.

3 options , Contact a packing specialist and have some boxes / crates made or contact Quad and see if they can sell you some boxes.

Second option , more longer term , Arrange a weekend away with the partner and attend the Wam show at Kegworth and take them with you

3rd option , Offer to travel 100 miles from Glasgee to meet up with a buyer

The only real problem is that of transportation. Quad, I am sure, would sell you some suitable cases for the Quad 63s, but they won't be cheap. There may be a packing case manufacturer near you who perhaps could make something similar (I approached one to make me a case for a very heavy amplifier).

Don't give up - at the price you are asking they are a steal! Someone will buy them as a Christmas present to themselves.

As of yesterday my ESL 63s have a new owner not too far from me :). I had a last minute wobble and questioned whether selling them was the right thing to do, but then came to my senses and accepted that sometimes hoarding hifi is counterproductive to enjoying the hobby, especially when it means playing musical chairs with items that take up a considerable amount of floor space! I hope they give their new owner many hours of pleasure...

Completely understandable last minute wobble - which may turn into regret when you hear just how much the new owner loves the ESL 63s! Great that you managed to sell them to a happy new owner!
