My father was an early adopter. He had a Grundig Portable Reel to Reel, and I recall him bringing back the first Philips Audio Cassette player just after it came out. I caught the bug too, and remember getting a Ronco (or equivalent) portable record player just after starting secondary school. One of my first albums was a compilation original artists volume from around 1972. I recall that it had "Schools Out" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". I know that it's a long shot, but did anyone else have that same record and can they save my sanity by pointing me to it?

In desperation .....

That sounds like it could be a K-Tel album. There are quite a few to look at but not so many with the original artists. Might be worth a Google.

Yes it was of that ilk! Either k-Tel, Ronco, Hallmark ...

Spent ages on Google already. It's becoming an obsession.

Most compilation albums covered a fairly short period of time, which kept them fairly current (like "Now" compilations). "Dixie" (Joan Baez) and "School's Out" were released about Sept '71 and April '72 respectively, so probably too far apart for many compilations. Sorry that isn't much help. Hope you get to the bottom of this, as it's now doing my head in too!

Yes, it's driving me off the edge. I can't be certain, but I think the album also included this ...

Although the sound quality of those compilations was not great, they were great value for money. Twenty songs by original artists all on one disc!

I've looked at the Hallmark (Pickwick) Top of The Pops albums for that year, couldn't see Joan Baez or School's Out on any of them. Also, they weren't recorded by original artists, just crap covers by unknown folk. Some of the album sleeves were quite good though.

Yes, mine were not covers. They were original artists.

Never knew that. But didn't buy them or the otters, as wasn't into pop music at that time.

Ah well as schools out was mid 72 and the Baez one about 12 months before your looking for a special that covered a few years I guess

My thoughts too, an album covering a particular theme rather than a point in time.
