View Full Version : Vintage Pioneer system in Sofia
After spending 25 years without any tapes and cassette decks 2 years ago I decided to by a modest vintage Technics system. So I have bought a deck, integrated amplifier and some basic speakers. The initial enjoyment ended pretty fast. The sound was far away from acceptable quality according to my ears. So I started upgrading. When I got a decent Technics system with SB-5000 speakers I saw a picture of vintage Pioneer rack. It looked gorejeous. So I took a decision to have a similar Pioneer system dated 1979 - 1981. Step by step I have reached the present situation.

Creating this system was quite a fun and excitement. It brings me joy. Even only the look brings a smile on me:). The sound is decent. I'm looking for a proper turntable - Pioneer PLC 590. I really hope that when I got it i will stop buying Pioneer equipment. It's a nice hobby but a cost centre too. The future will show...

The cassette deck and graphic equaliser above the left speaker are real man sized bits of kit. You got something for your money back then, not a microprocessor and intellectual property like now.

Wonderful collection of equipment from the greatest era. Some great albums on RTR their as well although you could tape something good over the Diana Krall.

The Pioneer tapes (OEM Fuji and TDK) are another passion of mine. Some of them are realy rare and difficult to find. Still missing 6-7 tapes. The CD player is a rarity as well. Made for Japan market, series Z components in black, with vertical loading mechanism. I got lucky to obtain it.

I much prefer vintage hifi , it comes from a era when companies were proud of the items made , Modern hifi is designed by accountants , Max prophet minimum cost :( ( Bulk / volume made items that is )

Yes, I find some special charm in vintage gear and media (cassette tapes, reel tapes, records).
But I use HiRes files and DACs as well. It's less charm but more convenience. And the sound quality could be impressive (which might be valid for vintage too).

Embrace the temptation - buy a Nakamichi for SQ and Pioneer CT-F1250 for the eyes:)

I will try to answer in a few words:). I have started my vintage project with Technics because this was my first HiFi brand back in the day. With the innocent intention for something small and basic. It was a mistake. I didn’t know how big is the vintage bug. Technics has some serious vintage bits but on very high prices. For serious collectors. My SB-5000 speakers are looking very attractive, to me at least, but they are no match for Pioneer HPM 100. Not even close. On the other hand I find the design of Pioneer CT-F 1250/950/900 extremely attractive. So I wanted a deck like this. After I bought the CT-F900 the desire to have other matching Pioneer bits became irresistible. So step by step I have acquired what you can see on the pictures in the first post. I still have to find a Pioneer PLC-590 though...

Thanks for a great explanation, much appreciated. The bug is big and is growing ;) The PLC-590 is a beauty - good look in finding one in great condition. There isn't many showing up for sale in Europe unfortunately.

I used to have Tanoy Mercury 4 but older than yours. My first HT system was based on Onkyo and Tanoy.
I'm really proud to present you my last vintage acquisition - the Pioneer PLC 590 direct drive in very good visual condition and technically perfect.

This is a long desired TT. Almost 3 years I was looking for the right chance. Today I got lucky. And I came home with the PLC 590. It's with the Pioneer PA-1000 carbon fiber tonearm. The shell is Pioneer PP-312 carbon fiber headshell (the one in the plastic bag above the original manuals). The shell on the arm is a borrowed one from a friend of mine. A temporary solution until I find a proper MM cartridge. The Pioneer SA-7800 amplifier has only MM lines. There is a cleaning arm as well. And some original mounting plates for other arms. So I consider this TT as a top component in my vintage system. A 15 kg of beauty. And I'm happy:):):). I will post more pictures after I connect it to the rest of the system.
On a later stage I could start looking for Pioneer H-Z1 MC head amplifier or some other brand, vintage of course:). That's for now.

Would you share some opinion regarding your Denon HA-500 Head Amp please? And what kind of MC you would recommend?
my head amp has recently been upgraded,its miles better than the standard ha-500. i bought it to run a denon 103sa which it kinda was designed for. since then i now use an audio technica art-7 cartridge and the ha-500 also works well with it too.
as regards to what mc i would recommend? well thats a tough question to answer,depends on your budget,your arm for matching etc plus i can only really talk about what ive owned which isnt a great deal of mc experience.

if you arm will cope with it,a denon 103r would be a great choice for dipping you toe in,but without knowing the effective mass of the pa-1000 its hard to say. if its 16 grams or over it will be fine

I have the carbon fiber shell PP-312. I still have to decide about the cartridge. Most probably I will start first with a MM one.
At the moment I’m testing the aluminum one with MM Grado cartridge taken from a friend of mine.

I know this arm Jamie. A friend of mine has a PLC-590 with it. I like it a lot but will stick to PA-1000 for a time being. So far I’m happy. I’m curious to see the amount on which the deal for PA-5000 will be closed.

No I bought the 590 without an arm,the arm came about a month later from Japan.
A friend of mine surprised me today with this gift - Pioneer SA-500 (amp) and TX-600 (tuner). I have a suitable deck for this duo - a Pioneer CT-F750. Maybe my Technics SB-5000 speakers and SL-23a TT will join the group.

Oooh, those 305s are gorgeous, Ivo! I love vintage headphones, both in looks and how they're voiced, generally, which is rather different from how modern headphones sound;)
I have some Koss PRO/4AAs and love them to bits!
Oh, and your 'Christmas presents' don't look too shabby either!!:eek: All gorgeous, and that Pioneer cassette deck is well cool - never seen one like it before. I suspect it must be rather rare?

The T-C3 is from a Collection X-C5 series including CD, tuner, amplifier and speakers, year 1993-1996. I have only the deck for my kitchen system. It's nothing special as parameters but is interesting as a design.
Regarding the vintage Pioneer headphones - my interest start very recently. I'm not a head fi guy for now at least. But this didn't stoped me yesterday to buy another cans - Pioneer Monitor 10. They are made very serious - leather and steel. The speakers are 57 mm. But I hope I will stop here...

I didn't make a dedicated listening session so far. Just brief comparison between the SE-305 and Monitor 10. The latter has more details. Quite analytical.
Regarding SE-32 I have to find new ear pads first. The original ones are gone. But I have no high expectations.
I still prefer music from speakers but being a vintage Pioneer fan I had to have some cans:)
Now I'm looking for Pioneer JB-100 headphone adaptor...

Are they glued on? On most headphones, the pads are removable -- they are simply stretched onto the cup.

It's really beautiful but I have only the CD player.
The other exotic line of Pioneer is the series 20. Matching it with HPM 150 / HPM-1500 speakers would make quite a system.

The 'Elite' series is the North American term, The European one which I believe is referred to as the 'Reference' but I think they are all the same anyway.
I am now on the lookout for the Pioneer Exclusive M8 or M7power amp and the Pioneer Exclusive C7 preamp, but these are very rare to find in Europe.

Pioneer Reference Music CD collection, Limited Edition, for my vintage Pioneer P-D1 CD player. The CDs are recorded very well. The music varies in terms of genre. All the CDs are made in Germany by Pioneer Electronics Deutschland GMBH. All booklets are in German. These CDs were not for sale. They were made in order to support Pioneer dealers when testing HiFi gear with clients.

Yes, you have sold very interesting CD.
I have some serious bias to vintage Pioneer stuff like compact cassette (blank and demo), limited edition CDs (not for sale) etc. Have one demo LP as well.

I have discovered recently that I'm not able to buy goods from USA. The eBay is restricting Bulgaria never mind that the seller is willing to send the good to Sofia. I have bought a lot of books, DVDs, CDs and tapes in the past but not anymore... And right now there are two Pioneer CDs for sale which I'm interested in.

Ivo, looking on Ebay, there a few copies of the Pioneer Superstars Super CD, all from USA, starting at about £17 inc. postage. Depends how badly you want it, and how much you were thinking of paying, but what's to stop me getting it and posting it on to you? Just a thought.

Just read this thread from start to finish - what a lot of lovely equipment you have there !!!! :thumbsup: I also have a vintage Pioneer system aswell - if you look at bottom of this reply, you can see the equipment I have. :) The equipment that Pioneer made back in the 70's were absolutely solid quality and I love em !!!! You might want to check out the Pioneer SPEC range - they really are nice!!!! Love your system !!! :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Just come across this thread and read it with interest, you reeealy love the Pioneer and it looks awesome btw. My interest in the thread was sparked by my recent acquisition of the SA7800 integrated amp which i believe you have, i'd be interested to find out what you think of it.

I know the SPEC but never had a chance to listen. The blue indicators line is not bad either.
Another interesting line is Pioneer series 20.

I really like the SA-7800. It’s the core of the system. And to me it is enough from HiFi point of view. I hope it will work for you too.
