I need help......I'm an addict

I can't help myself. Sometimes I relent and feel a sense of pride, a sense of achievement and promise myself I won't do it again. A few weeks pass and the urges come and go but the addiction is always there. Nudging the impulsive and teasing me to throw caution to the wind.

It's been a few weeks since my last relapse. It was costly and completely irrational but it was a minor slip and completely justified in the end result.

However, today.......... I lost control.

I've bought another amplifier.

A Luxkit Z504 power amp.


I heard one of these at the Penkridge bakeoff and to be honest, I rated it.

No Krell for me at the minute but I'm more comfortable trying this out. If it doesn't work out, I'll move it on and wait for the right Krell.

I have a sneaky feeling it could be quite good.

It's a proper amp, no bodgers been in this!!!!!

Much the way I'm steering my system (eventually). I'm aiming for high efficiency speakers and modest amplification. I already have all the bits I need.

Anybody thinking of bunging a great sounding little system together on a shoestring should listen to a vintage Trio KA-2000A integrated amp. Only 12 watts, but they're good ones, the sound quality is quite remarkable.

I know, 'cos I've had a few of these. I'd put the sound as being quite similar to the Sugden A21 for purity. Match them with a pair of vintage Wharfedale Super 8 RSDD full range drivers in good boxes and you have a really nice setup.

If it's better (IMO) I keep it, if its NOT, it gets sold on.

I've had multiple TTs, Phonostages, carts, arms etc and the bits I've got now are pretty safe in their position. There's only two cartridges I'd swap the Kb for and they NEVER come up for sale and the only other bit in question is the amplification. Due solely to the fact that the Monarchy is so good, I wondered if there was any value in trying a few Class A bits. The Monarchy is quite sublime and I'm not looking at selling it.

I'd be surprised if you find an amp that sounds better overall than the SM-70 mate. You'll find different and also more powerful, but what it does, it does nigh on to perfection.

I have an ebay watch on Monarchy Audio products and there's not been an SM-70 for a long time. Even SM-70 Pro's are getting scarce. As are the DAC's.

It was one amp I always wanted to try. Think it would have been perfect. They come up on eBay from time to time so you might get its twin OliIt's certainly a keeper mate. I would dearly love another to run in bridged mode.

I've not seen one advertised, ever. Only Geoff's when it came up. Saying that I wasnt on the lookout but think I'd have noticed.

I can confirm from experience that those Lux amps are quite special, A close friend of mine still owns a few of them, and I have had many a listening session with them over the years, they can be run in class A, or AB, depending on how you bias them, and which voltage rail tappings you use on the transformer etc, the output devices have now been discontinued though, but still plenty of them out there at the moment if they need repairing etc.

Agreed - I'm registered only as a buyer and have no wish to be a seller.

There is just too much hassle IMO in being a seller: full and accurate descriptions required including multiple photographs; risk of unjustified buyer dissatisfaction and poor feedback, and the risk of damage during carriage.

Not that I have anything much to sell: camera gear is usually given to others, or if 'vintage/classic' I will take it to a specialist camera shop that deals with professional film-based cameras; and any audio gear will get put up for sale here in 'Private Exhibitions' (typically for a price half that of eBay).

I’ve got 3 amps laying around myself. The thing about being able to purchase used audio is that as time move forward, there is more and more great used gear on the market! Gear I never thought I’d be able to afford has suddenly become available used! And all the great gear I fawned over all those years ago is now old enough for me to afford, the temptation is great!

What we need is a house with about 6 rooms large enough for a system, and have a different kind of stereo in each of them. A giant solid state rig in one room, a single ended tube rig in the next, etc.

A very clever cooling system on this amp! I can’t say I’ve ever seen one like it. Are those copper tubes filled with oil? Or some such fluid to transfer the heat to the fins? They look like galvanized sheet metal heat sinks? Ingenious.

RussellIt's great isn't it. It's a side of the hobby I really enjoy. I love trying different things and it's nice to be at the point where improvements are less like a leap and more like a small step.

The amplification is probably the most fun to try and improve on. There is SO much choice and nothing has really turned me off. They all have had something I really enjoyed, Unlike when I've put a new phonostage in and instantly disliked it.

Not sure how the heat pipe works but yes, it seems impressive from the pictures. I'll put some much improved pictures on when it gets here and I get the lid off.

I experimented thoroughly with speakers. Wharfdale, Missions, Monitor audio, Celestion, Frugal, Ruark plus more have all been through here.

Admittedly, not many of those would be classed as "Hi-end" but there are limitations here that I cannot get around.

Any speaker with a rear firing port is always going to struggle due to the confines of space.

Front ported speakers all caused standing waves (except the Mission) because of the Glass doors behind and big window at the end of the room the speakers fire at.

It's a frustrating problem but not many speakers come here and sound good so why waste money trying to find something better than the Pioneers (Which for some reason NO ONE believes are actually superb)

The other thing is, I've only heard one pair of speakers which made me think "oh, I like these" which is solely down to the excellence of the Pioneers. I can't buy the ones I liked though, because they are much too big for the room.

I've heard a great deal of them too so im Pretty satisfied in that area.

Great that you're kinda there with your Pioneers, I feel the same about my Ushers after years of changing every month or two. I've tried most of those brands and tried not to be snobbish and gave them a chance. Interesting point about the ports, I always thought the same but found speakers with big ports at the back sound ok in my room at moderate volumes near the wall. I put this down to the smaller port resonant frequency exciting the standing wave in my room which the bigger ports (Celestion A3s and my current Ushers) didn't, which is a very good result :)

What were those other speakers you liked then, do tell?

Great that you're kinda there with your Pioneers, I feel the same about my Ushers after years of changing every month or two. I've tried most of those brands and tried not to be snobbish and gave them a chance. Interesting point about the ports, I always thought the same but found speakers with big ports at the back sound ok in my room at moderate volumes near the wall. I put this down to the smaller port resonant frequency exciting the standing wave in my room which the bigger ports (Celestion A3s and my current Ushers) didn't, which is a very good result :)

What were those other speakers you liked then, do tell?I am "there" with the pioneers in as much as I just love what they do. Wide baffle but have fantastic imaging, big bass driver but still very very tight bass lines, the mids are clean and the treble from the super tweeter is amazing.

The only problem I have is I know I'm not getting the best from them. Not for lack of quality in the chain before them but because I haven't got any proper stands.

I am going to either commission a pair or make them myself but I want to decouple them from the stands as much as possible. The suspended floor does sometimes create a bit of bass lift and I found that putting some packing foam (good suggestion Steve) under the speakers reduced this massively. I want some heavy duty stands that will further improve things.

The thing I really like about the speakers is down to the sealed cabinet. You get the initial attack from things like the kick drum and I've never found that to be the case with ported speakers. It may just be a coincidence but IMO it's clearly apparent in a these sealed cabs.

The only other speaker to "float my boat" is the JMLabs that Macca has. I thought they were as good as the Pioneer but being much bigger, they had substantially more scale.

I've never heard any Tannoys so this is something I'm going to try and rectify at some point. I've heard a few say recently that they don't rate them yet they are still very popular so I need to see for myself.

Big Tannoys will work fine in a small room, heard that many times, most recently at Cooky's place earlier in the year. Not to say a bigger room isn't better, because it is, but they do work fine. They don't boom because they don't have 'stunt bass'.

It refers to the size, or quality of the change: 'sea change' being perhaps a change from being in a ship sat in the doldrums to one where the ship could move. 'Step change' is one where there is an abrupt change, with no in-between state.

It's a bit like the oft-quoted "quantum leap". The 'leap' implies it is large, whereas quantum leaps are very, very small - the adjective 'quantum' implies it is a sudden step change, that is: discontinuous.

RussellI've tried mate. It's just a non started. Her mom bought her the piano. She hasn't played it in 7 years!!! I understand the attachment though so I'm ok with it.
