View Full Version : Wanted : Conrad Johnson PV12 - Croft 25R - or similar
Still on the lookout for valve pre to pair with my Primaluna power amp and Tannoy Berkeley speakers.
Currently using a Promitheus TVC ( which will come up for sale once I have replaced it) but looking for something else.
Have tried various passives including Tisbury, BTE, as well as Pass DCB1 none of which I liked.
So on the lookout for a Conrad Johnson PV12, Croft 25R, Herron VTSP or of similar quality/spec.
Listen to Classic/Prog Rock, Electronic ( Berlin School ), Female Vocal and acoustic.

www.radlettaudio.co.ukThanks, but looking for something a little cheaper, last 25R that sold went for £700 over on PFM and just as I had decided to buy it, it sold [emoji849]
So looking for around the same budget or less of course [emoji6]
Hi Mike, have you considered a cheap valve buffer along with a passive pre?
That's what I use with my Primaluna Prologue power amp and Tannoy HPDs and it's great.
Just a thought.

Just a thought.No I hadn't but I will now [emoji6]
I'm a noob when it comes to HiFi gear and all its mysterious options, but I do know what sound I like and want and the TVC is just not quite there.
Mind you it was only bought as a cheap temporary pre amp anyway and it's done well so far, I just want more lol
I just want more lol
More what Mike? what do you think the current set up is not doing well, are you finding it all a bit "thin"? or is it something else?
I have a selection of passives and actives with an 845 power amp and Tannoy GRF Memory's and every time I have a swop around I always seem to end up back with the passives (Glasshouse TVC, nva P50sa.)
I tried a Croft (the basic 25 and it lasted 25 minutes before I sold it, it just did not gel with me or my system)
I too had not thought about a tube buffer after the passive so I will look at your progress with this if you try it with some interest. :)

I just don't get you Mike, or rather what type of sound you are after.
When you had the Pass DCB1 did you have that wired in after your Promitheus TVC? I would have thought that would sound very good.
Do you still have the DCB1? I can suggest a remote control passive that sounds excellent, indeed stellar when rewired with OCC wire. This followed by the DCB1 or similar is the business.

This is the online shop for tubecad
http://tubecad.com/
It's an extremely informative website with some serious engineering analysis - though a bit of a heavy read at times. The whole site is well worth exploring.[emoji106]

I may try one of these remote control passives in place of my Tisbury.
Which OCC wire do you suggest for the rewire.
Also thought I might remove the transformer and mains from the case and feed DC in.

The Dc is totally unconnected with the audio path, so IMO is not worth removing the tx and mains.

Didn't you like the AD Satchmo, Mikey? I had the same unit on demo recently and thought it was very impressive. in fact hard to imagine a better active pre, if that's what you're looking for. Bit pricey tho', considering your stated budget.
