View Full Version : Beresford Caiman SEG with Supercap and headphone upgrades + optional LDA PSU
I bought this from Bill (Bourneendboy) a couple of months ago, and it is not for me. I was hoping to get rid of another box with this, but prefer my Graham Slee Solo Ultra Linear headphone amp.

Basically, Stan has upgraded the key areas with super caps, and added the Capella headphone amp chip. It was a special order and quite expensive.
It is still in the same unmarked condition and has seen very little use here.
I am after £250 posted for this.

This is a very special SEG having recently been back to Stan Beresford for the Super Cap upgrade and also to have the Capella Headphone Amp chip fitted. It sounded fantastic before and has now been transformed into something very special indeed! It also has one of Mark Grant's 'Caiman' fuses fitted.
It's only a few months old and is in immaculate 'as new' condition.
Included in the sale is the original 12v PSU, box and instructions.
This package would set you back £320.00,
I made a mistake on the price - I paid £240 for this, so would quite like to get that back form it.
Bump for a nice DAC with headphone output.
Quick question, does this need the Supercap PSU or just a linear supply to get the best out of it?
I'm assuming the internal Supercap upgrade is the same as what Stan is about to produce as a PSU?

I think that is a question best answered by Stan. I have never heard the super cap PSU.
The MCRU LDA PSU is a quality PSU (as you are probably aware) and I do not know if the Supercap PSU will make the DAC sound any different.
I have just read that to make the most of the Supercap upgrade in the SEG, ideally you need a 15v PSU. Just as well I have one available as well...

I can't believe this hasn't sold, everything I've read says this is a stunning Dac with plenty of options to mod.

I could be interested in a swap for a valve based DAC, depending on the DAC.
DAC now £220 (£100 cheaper than the purchase price). I will do the DSC + PSU for £400 posted.

Have you checked the list price of the new Cayman Seg? I know, I know, yours have the supercap + headphones upgrades, still... This might explain the lack of takers. ;)

expensive part usually. i feel your pain.
Yes, relatively expensive but needs to be treated as a consumable these days.
The sale SEG won’t cover the cost of a new flywheel.
Last offer - £375 posted for the complete package.
If it does not go for this, I will keep it and see if I can mate a nice CD transport to it, or try a few upgrades.
This is still sat around, looking lonely.

I am selling this as it is basically not to my taste in my system.
Offers around £200 for the DAC posted (Yes I know they are cheaper new, but this one originally cost £320 with the upgrades).
If you want the LDA/MCRU Linear PSU as well, I will do the bundle for £350 posted.

What does the Capella Headphone Amp chip change? How does it alter the headphone output?
Better sound or higher gain?
Does it effect the preamp fuction? I'm planning to use with some active speakers as well.
Can i upgrade the firmware chip/is it independent of the Capella Headphone Amp chip fitted?
Having received a couple of messages from other parties today, I thought I would update this sales thread.
It is no longer for sale, as I had it upgraded further, having decided to keep it.
Having acquired a new DAC, this is now back up for sale.
A few changes since the original advert have happened:
1. New clocks have been fitted by Mr Beresford.
2. Upgraded RCA sockets have been fitted by Mr Beresford.
3. I have noticed a small scratch on top of the DAC.
4. Brexit - so any goods imported into the UK are subject to VAT and customs duty. As such, this is probably best as a sale restricted to the EU.

This is being sold with the original packaging, an SMPS and a Dorado Mk1 PSU enhancer, which is switchable to 12V or 15V.
It also has the SEG42 firmware.
I am looking for €250 posted within the EU.
Yes, I know you can buy a new one for £180, but that won't have the super caps, the Capella headphone amp chip, the better clocks or upgraded RCA sockets.
The original purchase price was £320, since then I have spent about another £140 on the Dorado and further upgrades.
I don't think you will find many better performing SEGs than this one. This also has the Dorado, which is difficult to buy right now.
To get the best out of it, you will need to add a better PSU.
