I am going to try and babyproof my front room, so i am thinking about a little (sprout/amptastic) amp, that can live under the 1210. by under, i mean between the feet, facing out through the front. if i got one with a remote, it could live under the tt cover and be operational. the main rig would then be moved to the gentleman's quarters.

is this a terrible idea?

also - how short can a tt lead be?

Try it and see. Many amps push out too much 'hum' for this to work and if your TT isn't well screened this will give you trouble.

Usually I keep other equipment away from the TT and I make sure that the phono amp and head amp are away from everything too. However, I did attach a small SMPS to the TT, close to the tonearm for a small USB lamp that sits over the record, for nighttime listening and it made no difference in noise, as far as I can tell. It would probably be a different story with a linear power supply though.

Sticking a metal sheet or some copper tape to the underside of the TT and connecting it to the mains earth would act as a shield. This could be an option, if you did hear an increase in noise.

Would lead not work? Or is that just for radiation?

I really rate those little Amptastics, have one myself. Dunno about remotes though - maybe other makes come with one. Will the ir signal pass through the T/T cover?

My office set up is on a glass rack and the '80s jap crap amp is too wide to go between the legs of the rack, so it's on the top shelf with the tt perched on the amp. No hum issues here. Maybe more luck than anything else.

Placing the ‘table directly on the amp may or may not cause an issue. But if you had a shelf, something to suspend the ‘table several inches over the amp. I’m sure 6 inches would make a real difference in hum potential.

Unfortunately I only have about another inch clearance from the top of the arm to the cover.
