I've got a new Technics SL1200G turntable.

However, the earthing wire that came with it has spade lugs that aren't big enough for the post on my Lehmann phono stage.

I'm loath to snip the Technics wire, so can I just use any old piece of cheapo wire from my spares box? Or does it have to have some fancy shielding or something?

No it's just copper wire.

But make sure you get the direction of the cable correct, otherwise the hum will get worse...

And make sure the wire is near vertical: it helps if the electrons can go downhill!

Any wire will work. I have soldered many Technics earth cables to extend them. If it doesn't hum afterwards all should be ok.
