View Full Version : Bigbottle MC Phonostage

Earlier this year, I embarked on a little project to build a DIY phonostage. I picked a PCB off the internet and stuffed the board with good quality parts. The "Wizard" Phonostage was born BUT it didn't sound as good as i had hoped. After a little bedding in period, i decided to get the main man (Firebottle) on the case.*
Alan and i sat down for a little brainstorm about what i liked about the phonostage and ultimately what i didn't. The soundstage was all central and there was little to no width or depth. There wasn't much scale either. Almost like listening through a little tunnel.
We listened to multiple phonostages we had around at the time and picked what we liked about them. Eventually Alan got his soldering iron out and set about the board, changing values, components, layout and adding some of the circuitry from his own Vivant phonostage. Once he'd finished, the board barely resembled what it had started out as. Mounted breadboards on top made it look like a multi storey Car Park, a proper DIY job! but the sound now was where i wanted it to be. Over the last few months i have been comparing the Wizard we made, to as many phonostages as i could get my hands on. I wanted to see how it fared and whether id wasted my time and money.
I decided a few weeks back that it was something i'd like to get "out there" but didn't really know what that could look like or even where to start. My plan was/is to provide it as a DIY project for people like me, to be able to have a go at this sort of thing with relative simplicity. I wanted to make a full BOM, provide assembly instructions and share the joy i felt when i got it up and running.*
One of the big worries i had was to construct the PSU for the phonostage. I needed help with that as i had no idea what i was doing. Stuffing a board is like painting by numbers but creating a PSU? No way! I then realised that if i made a PCB, it could have the PSU components all on there as well as the phonostage components, and it could be just as easy to assemble as the main board.*
The first port of call was to see if Alan would allow me to use his linear circuit in any plans i had going forward. Thankfully, he agreed and did me a hand drawn circuit diagram. GREAT!! But wait, What do i do now. I was lost and had no idea what to do now. I downloaded multiple bits of PCB design software but quickly realised i was way out of my depth........I needed to recruit some help.
I managed to get a top UK designer on the case but a few personal set backs for him have slowed progress to a stop (Understandably, All the best to him too). I reluctantly accepted that i was an impatient sod and needed to get this moving at a rate i wanted, so i found a really good fella in Germany to take the Project on.*Within 24 hours he had converted the Hand drawn Circuit diagram into a digital file and sent me a copy for my perusal. It went straight to Alan for approval.*
Another 24 hours passed and i got a 3D rendering of the proposed Circuit board!!! This is the pace i like lol.
Hopefully, before the end of the year there will be a "Bigbottle MC Phonostage PCB" a BOM, and an assembly guide.
There is also the possibility of a MM PCB version and also a Head Amp PCB but this is something I will look at once I've got my head around how everything works, how much it costs to manufacture the PCB, etc.*
This has been a great learning curve and I have to say, there are some really great people out there who are willing to help and offer support and advice. This project has brought out the "good eggs" in the HiFi community. Without them, it would still be a circuit diagram sat on my table.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180811/a531722629cd02d971961ba2ccad041a.jpg

yep, very cool, stick me on the list to hear it please, did you sort the valve/pcb problem out?Yes mate, the problem I had was that I couldn't find any free software to create the Circuit diagram as none of the free stuff contained a Valve as a drag and drop component. The fella who's done all this for me had the necessary software and has flown through the work.

After a couple of months of hard work and my gratitude to JP of D.I.YAudio, the prototype PCBs are here.
A couple of members here are going to undertake a build of a board and have a go at putting together their own phonostage.
A BOM is now very close to completion and parts have been ordered.
Ive made a start on my board and am currently awaiting a delivery of resistors to do a bit more. I'll add the progress as I go for anyone who may be interested in following the progress.

Cheers mate. It's still got a way to go. Found some errors in the BOM tonight so redoing that.
Only found it when I'd soldered some resistors in [emoji23]
Looks like minor typos buy that's what building a couple of prototypes does, iron out the wrinkles.

Ironing out the wrinkles as I go.
Decided to abandon the "smallest components first" approach and just solder in the bits I already have available.
Progress!!!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181017/43d080811f6a186a79e8f3ad4f393cdb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181017/4358c221d46b8e418abd50aa3c81935a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181017/02a00a6ccbe6bba5fe8737bb6f79b030.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181017/736d22b6c6e20ffc7db3ed4aef2b5b40.jpg

Hi Oliver
Apart from a few minor but very frustrating position and value issues this board is quite straight forward.
I'm really looking forward to building it and hoping it's as good or better than your original Wizard phono stage
Like you i have very little knowledge but can stuff a board hence me building my dcb1 turbo which Firebottle finished for me
Think i can finish this one myself,,, hopefully...
Great post and photos mate

Steve...Hi Steve.
The goal is to have an easy to follow build guide and straight forward parts ordering process. Everything comes from Farnell and is readily available and if you follow the part numbers on the BOM, you really shouldn't get it wrong.
Obviously, there is the option to put your own choice of components in the board and that flexibility is fine as long as the values are the same.
It's aimed at the beginner so even the PSU is catered for. The only difficult bit is building it into a case and making sure you wire the Traffo the right way.
Once I've picked the Traffo, it should be easy enough to sort out and that will be included in the build guide too. Along with how to test it before you attach it to the system [emoji50] [emoji38]
It's an exciting time.
Looks great , sounds very promising!
Wow, just found this thread, great project Oliver!
Watching this with interest as it develops.
Have to say, you've given a lot to this forum, as this testifies

The forum has given back in equal measure mate. There's no way I'd have the system I have now if it weren't for this place.
There should be some more updates in the coming days but I have a little bit of work on the Krell tondo tomorrow if the new bits arrive!

Didn't get much time yesterday so no soldering. I did stuff the board to see how everything is looking. Noticed the big green caps were a bit too wide for the space they need to go. Fortunately, I have a couple of spacers that should lift them off the board a little. Just enough to clear the resistors it's sitting on.*
Making a list of minor revisions to the board as I get to anything I'd like to change. It's mainly spacing on the board.*

Are you soldering the parts on the top of the board? Assuming its a double sided board its better sdeted from the bottom, cleaner, better mechanical integrity, easy to fix mistakes. Looking good though.
What valves will it use Oliver? Great to see it coming along.

I have only don't them from the back side previously. Looks a bit prettier but adding time and using more materials.

Nice combo. I am currently using the part PCB part P2P wired prototype with that combination and it sounds great. Has very low Miller capacitance and good gain figures. Impedance is good too but can't remember the figures off hand.

Sorry, the reason is simply to ensure the most consistent and thorough connection. As SQ states (and as I know you are doing), the primary solder point is on the rear of the board. If I’m being very critical, some of your solder joints look like they could do with just a touch more heat to allow the solder to flow more tightly to the pad and component leg (I’m assuming you are using 60/40 solder?).

Yup, more heat flow! I'll apply it later.

I've gone off using silver solder because of flow issues even with a proper hot iron. In most situations it is of no advantage in any case.

I've gone off using silver solder because of flow issues even with a proper hot iron. In most situations it is of no benefit in any case.To be fair, I had it lying around after I built a pair of SPOTFIRE se (silver edition) for someone. I don't generally use it either but might as well! I use Loctite 60/40 usually.
It's actually pretty good stuff and bonded really well with the cable and plugs. My suspicion is the problem is my concern of ruining the PCB with too much heat. I'm still new to PCBs so am still learning. I'll apply some more heat later on and see what happens, I'll probably re do a couple as I got a bit carried away and they look blobby.

Ordinary lead based solderered joints will be far more conductive than the spindly component wires simply because of their size. If I recall, lead is about 30% less conductive than copper so a soldered joint needs only 30% greater cross section than the copper wire being soldered to match it. (roughly, I think, bearing in mind that lead solder is an alloy :))

No problems with standard 60/40, just didn't see me using the silver for anything else so decided to use it on this.

A few pics from tonight's efforts.
Blobby Soldering fixed [emoji38]
Capacitors raised due to fouling resistors next to them (next set of boards to be slightly larger for more room)
Heatsink fitted with regulator
Polypropylene caps now soldered in place.
Zener diodes and diodes soldered
B9A valve bases soldered in.
There will be a break for now as I need to order more bits but it'll have to wait for a while.

A few pics of tonight's work. Board is now completed and ready to be transplanted into the casework. Won't be for a few weeks though [emoji19]
Valves inserted to check the overall height of the board on 10mm standoffs.
Very happy with the board so far. A few revisions of component spacing and a couple of missing identification numbers for resistors and wire links need to be addressed but generally, the board is nice and rigid and is high quality. There are a couple of capacitor spaces with no requirement of a capacitor so they will need to be removed. A couple of spare resistor spaces too need to go but that's about it. No lifted tracks from soldering with too much heat, etc.

So much misinformation. It’s silver loaded solder not silver solder which is quite different. Silver loaded solder improves the wetability of the joint allowing for a better flow at a lower temp. The eutectic point of the solder is extended reducing the issues around dull or dry joints. Silver also adds to the strength of the joint and it may if you believe in it “sound” better.

Yesterday saw the Prototype PCB go for testing.
With the board completely finished, the total cost for the PCB and Parts came in at around £145.
They are high quality parts. All Vishay resistors and Vishay 1% tolerance Capacitors for the critical sections of the board. All polypropylene capacitors where film caps are required with a maximum of 5% tolerance and Panasonic Axial capacitors.
Time taken to populate the board is probably around the 60-90 minute mark.
Silver solder from Shockwave was used for this board. I have no idea of the % of silver content but it is a nice solder to use.
The Transformer for this unit will be provided by Toriody.pl and costs around £70. Airlink will do the same TX for around £50 but I prefer Toriody.pl
Next will be the build!!!!
that all sound affordable!

After what feels like an eternity of waiting, the first ever BIGBOTTLE phonostage is up and running!!! [emoji4][emoji4][emoji4]
I am grinning my head off [emoji38]
The case is a bit big but it's a good one and I used for the Wizard.
All the components are of very good quality, unlike the Wizard which I built on the cheap as I had no idea how it would sound.
This Bigbottle is certainly demonstrating the worth of getting HQ components.
More to follow.

I'm still way off completely understanding what everything does BUT I've managed to put it together and it works which means if 'I' can do it, anyone can!!
That was the goal, a phonostage that anyone can build.
I can't believe it works [emoji38][emoji38]

I'm listening and it's certainly turned out better than I hoped. There's also a real gratifying feeling that with Alan's help, I've driven this project to a finale.
A few refinements to the board layout, a little adjustment to the BOM values and this is ready to go in terms of a DIY project for people. If any one is interested. I'll probably do the first 3 boards as non profit too just to get some feedback.
Just need Steve and Jamie to build theirs now, not that Jamie will be in a rush. He's bought a Paradise [emoji50]

Hi Oliver,
I've been following your progress and its great to hear that its up and running successfully, be interesting to know how you find it from a SQ point of view.
I am very interested in building one myself, just need to get some pennies together.
Well done!!

AdrianHi Adrian!
Well, straight away it blatantly apparent that this is a step forward from the previous Wizard phonostage that I built from a kit online and got Firebottle to bless with his magic.
The thing is it's a little unfair because I literally bought the cheapest components I could for the Wizard because of its unknown ability. The Bigbottle isn't a 'no expense spared' version but I didn't skimp on the components. I went for as high quality as I could afford this time and I am being rewarded with a sound that was beyond my expectation.
Personally, I believe in 'burn in' and if it sounds like this now, I can't wait for it to be run in.
Obviously, I'm going to be entirely biased about SQ because of my heavy involvement with its design and creation so my opinion should be viewed as biased.
However, that said, if the build cost is what I expect and is no more than £350, I doubt anything will better it at that price.

Need to get some hours on It and see if there's any change in sound. Was pretty impressed with it last night to be honest.
It's been a good learning experience and hopefully, will provide a positive experience for anyone who wants to try and build one.

Well it's finally ready for sale as a DIY project. JP finished the manufacturing files, I have finished the BOM and Firebottle has checked everything and we are all very satisfied with the final result.
I have a thread over on DIYaudio in the Group Buy section if that's of interest. If you want to take on the project, you can get in touch here too.
This project is to allow access to a very good valve based phonostage for realistic money. If taken on as a DIY project, i expect the total cost to be under £350 for the finished article. If someone wants one building, we can discuss that too.
A BOM will be provided and if you follow the build guide (nearly finished) it should be within the ability range of most DIYers, after all, i built one lol.
PCB's are likely to be £30-ish plus postage. If you are interested, get in touch!

I'm not saying this is as good as ABC because to be honest, I'm completely biased but if we can get together, I'm happy to bring it and see how it fares against your gear.
Hi Oliver
Now the DCB1 is complete Ive started on the Bigbottle phono stage.
Really looking forward to getting this complete. The board is stuffed with all the resistors and most of the Diodes,
the capacitors are on order and ill fit when they arrive. So far its been an easy job, hope it stays that way fitting the caps...

You may need a spacer under the caps in 131/231 if I remember correctly but on the new board, this should be fine. The spacing looks better.
I really hoping you like it too, I'm loving mine but like I said, I'm gonna be biased.
New boards red or blue??
My preference would be blue mate but i don't mind either

I settled on blue so I am looking forward to getting them and having a good look at them. These are of a higher quality to that of the original prototype boards I had. I will be building one myself and fitting it with boutique parts. This isn't going to be any time soon, just as an ongoing bit of fun.
I will have a couple of spare boards so if someone does want to build one, let me know. They are £30 each + postage.

A little more on the board.
Put the jumper wires in. Added a bit of red sleeve to highlight their position on the board. I don't normally bother but not a bad idea to try and protect a wandering finger.
A few resistors and Zeners on order from farnell. Should be here tomorrow so hopefully I can get a bit more done.

Been away from this project for a little while with illness, making cables and sending Bigbottle PCBs to the UK, USA, Singapore, Germany, Netherlands, South Africa and more.
This is now truly a worldwide product, that I hope will be thoroughly enjoyed. The best bit for me is how cheaply this can be built and that is making a valve phonostage available to those with basic DIY skills.
I'm very pleased that the DIY community is having a go!
Caught up a bit on my own board today. All the parts are now in place and that includes the little SMD FET. Sweet Jesus, that took some effort.
A top tip: get some reverse tweezers.
I am now waiting for some isolation pads for the heat sinks and then it will be ready to go in a box.
In the pics, there is a resistor standing on end. This is the loading for my cart. I know what value I want because I've already done the hard yards on the original. If you don't know what you want, run some wire to a pair of RCA sockets and make loading plugs. Basically just a resistor of whatever value you need, soldered between the live and ground on the plug. Then you can either make multiple pairs or just change the resistor in your plug.
You will need loading plugs or resistors for this phonostage.

Got the last bits done that I can while I await a delivery from China.*
So far, everything has gone very smoothly. Board layout it very good and the quality of the PCB is far better than I'd hoped for.*
The Jfets are now in place, thankfully. A magnification lens on my helping hands really came in useful.*
I added some solder to the board first, on one of the pads. I then managed to solder the Jfet in place and then solder the other two legs. I then re-did the first. I suppose there may be a better way but it worked.
I've now just got to save up for a new case and wait for the bits from China and it's gonna be done!*

Just had an email to say things didn't quite go to plan for the Bigbottle at the Bakeoff. Apparently some sort of matching issue with the cartridge led to a different cartridge being used, then alignment was off and then an issue with loading?
Seems like it was up against it from the off.*
The bit of feedback I did get was this:
"The owner advised the audience he had exchanged the original valves for a pair more to his personal taste.
The forward projection was very evident and the cohesiveness of the performers was a strong perception, I was trying to gauge the width and depth of the soundstage but the forward projection was masking the sense of space. The forward Projection was becoming a detractor to the balance of the overall presentation"
I've been a little surprised by this as the phonostage didn't present forward in the three systems I've tried it in and the width of the soundstage is usually more evident BUT it's feedback and I accept good and bad.*
This was the original prototype PCB version, not the new one. Hopefully, when mine is built, I can get it out and about for some more feedback.
I was at the Yorkshire Hi-Fi Club do yesterday and heard your stage Oliver. The situation was much as you describe but specifically:
Dave had two cartridges, an optical design that requires a custom stage to power it and decode the optical signal and a high output MC. Obviously the optical design couldn’t be used. Briefly the high output was used but it was immediately obvious that this was overloading and distortion was obvious. Another member had brought a recently rebuilt Ortofon and this was pre-aligned in his own SME style head shell. The deck in question had a 12” Jelco arm on it and the head shells were swapped and the tracking reset to 1.8g. After a couple of tracks I asked Dave (Brooks) if he could raise the arm height as it was obvious the cartridge was very down at the back - he made the required adjustment (I think even a bit more could have been done but he was running out of arm pillar adjustment) and the sound was more open - clearly better. The chap who had brought the phonostage (your design) said be normally ran a Benz (wood I think) and liked it with no additional loading so that is how it was run initially. To be honest, I didn’t find the sound at all ‘forward’ and I am surprised you have been told so. In fact I found it overly relaxed and rather dynamically flat :(. We then tried adjusting the loading with some plugs the owner had brought - this made next to no diffference to me. I’m sorry, but in this case the cumulative sound left me entirely unengaged. However, what the cause of this was is very difficult to say. It could have been the cartridge, the setup of the arm/cartridge (very easily), your stage, compatibility issues (though it seemed to work fine in a technical sense with the amplification) etc.

On one hand it's too forward and on the other it's lacklustre [emoji38][emoji38]
I've had a few folks here who've listened to the vinyl and their comments were different again. I certainly didn't feel Macca felt a lack of dynamics or energy from it.
I honestly think something wasn't quite right. I know the owner uses Amperex valves, whether that was a factor, I don't know.
The loading is a strange one. Ordinarily, I load the Kb at either 220 or 470 so if there were no plugs in, that's 1k IIRC which I don't see as ideal for the Kb.
All ends up, I think it's been handicapped a little but the massive difference in comments just shows nobody really knows anything [emoji23][emoji23]
If Macca was one of the blokes there yesterday I cannot imagine how he arrived at the conclusion that the sound was too forward - he must have found some of the other gear unbearably so!
As I wrote before, different loading was tried but to little effect.

I'm almost finished my Bigbottle build ( my second build ) and have been following this thread with a great deal of interest.
I'm really quite shocked to hear 2 conflicting views on Oliver's phono stage, I cant for the life of me understand how you could have complete contrasting results??? My first build was the red board and was still going through development but it was incredibly detailed and most certainly NOT bright and over forward and definitely not lack lutre.
The soundstage was probably the best I've heard upto date.
When my (blue board, final revision) is complete I will give my views as to how it performs.
I would also say i found the final Blue board really quite easy to build, i got a full list or parts with part numbers and a diagram of where to put the parts on the board, much easier than a jigsaw puzzle.
The only skill required in building is learning how to solder... PROPERLY...

Steve...Steve,
There's always going to be polarised views. I've heard stuff that people rave about and been underwhelmed. That's hifi!
Ultimately, the only view that matters is that of those of who own one. If they build it, learn something, improve their system and then enjoy it, I am more than happy. That was the objective when I set out.
Also, the PCB DIY project was a not for profit venture. It's been a success AFAIC, (30 sold in two weeks) and given me the opportunity to work from concept to completion.
I am happy.
Hi Oliver
A polarised view is one thing but both views were at opposition with each otger .
One saying too forward and one saying lackluster and laid back.
How do you figure ????
One with overly sensitive ears and one deaf ????
Dont make sense!!!

It's just HiFi.
I asked for the one fella to have a listen and he did. He gave me the feedback and that's all he can do.
Whether we agree or not is another thing.
I guess your right mate!!
No, he wasn't, he heard it at my house.

No need to ‘surmise that something wasn’t optimal’ as cartridge setting on its own definately wasn’t optimal and experimentation with loading was cursors at best. No need for your ‘pals’ to rush to your rescue with slurs.
Steve, perhaps you are deaf!

Steve, perhaps you are deaf!Mark,
There's no rescuing required either!
As you say, it definitely wasn't optimal for its performance and I am ok that the feedback reflects that.
I certainly don't want any negativity around this project due to disagreements, especially when it hadn't been heard as I would've hoped
The Project is there to engage the hifi community, not divide it.
Admittedly, the accounts of the performance are quite polar but it's ok. Like I said, that's HiFi!
I also received reports of a hum issue which was solved via some form of earthing. The idea of getting some feedback was for that purpose, to iron out any wrinkles.
Let's not fallout. Also I want to pick your brains about the Monoblocks you and si took. !

You have my apologies, my comment wasn't ment as a slur.
As for me being deaf, possibly but the phono stage really didn't sound lacklustre or forward and i don't understand, both comments were at odds with each other.
Once again you have my apologies

OK, it time for said owner of the phono stage to put his perspective on Saturday's events. Firstly there was the usual initial problem with hum arising from an earth loop when earthing the phono stage to TT. In all honesty it did not perform to its best, and was uncharacteristically smooth and laid back, which is not how it sounds when played at home or in Alan's setup, but that's the fickled world of hifi.
I did find the speakers at the venue had a more forward presentation if you sat at the front of the room, their sweet spot, for me was standing up at the rear of the room. This may account for the difference in perception of sound presentation.
I think the issue of the phono stage's lack luster performance laid more with the shortage of time to set up a rebuilt cartridge of an unknown quantity, it just how bake offs go sometimes.

Thanks for adding your comments.
Look, we both *know* from listening to it, in our systems, that the phonostage certainly isn't lacklustre. It's just one of those things that happens sometimes.
I've heard things at Bakeoffs that made me sit up and take notice, bought one and under real scrutiny, been left underwhelmed.
It's quite obvious that it didn't work at MCRU for *whatever* reason. The only thing I don't understand is the ground loop issue. Do you have any issues at home? Or is this a known venue issue?
The bakeoff doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. As long as, when you use it, you enjoy it, I'm happy. Customer/owner feedback is the real measure, and from our conversations, I don't worry [emoji6]
There will be other opportunities for people to hear the Bigbottle and see what they think. Hopefully in their own system, where all things should be judged!

Managed to get a bit more done. It's not easy with one hand!!!
Bought the RCA plugs from Valab (Taiwan) and Smangus kindly sent me another couple. Superb value at £10 for two pairs from Valabs eBay site. Gratis from Andy!
Thanks Andy [emoji4]
I've measured all of them and they are uniform in size. Fit and finish Excellent and the RCA plug fits very snug.
The IEC inlet is a Viborg gold-plated copper jobbie. £9. Delivered from China. Again, looks and feels very nice indeed. No complaints here!
In the fuse holder is a bit of Foo. A silver alloy Valab fuse lol. £2. I thought it'd a bit tongue in cheek so in it went.
No more now until I get the front plate off to fit the power switch.
Transformer still hadn't arrived. 31 days since I ordered. I'll be emailing soon!

what tabs are they feeding you oliI'm currently taking 30/500 Codammol with 500g of Naproxen.
Whilst that may not seem large to some folks, I think I've only taken paracetamol on a hand full of occasions.
I'm basically off my tits most of the time at the minute. Either that or be stuck in bed.
used to take naproxen. good for inflamation, but didnt work on my hip. have to use diclofenac. dont take coocodamel, but take 6 paracetamol along with 6 tramadol, plus 2 or 3 diclofenac for pain... it takes the edge off but doesnt kill it. can take a little while to get used to a lot of meds, so know what you mean :eyebrows:
6 tramadol !!!:stalks::eek: 2 a day was enough for me.
Alas i need em. cant take codeine types or morphia. you get used to it when you have to. first day or 2 i was a bit tired but been on this mix for quite a few years now. at least your pain will get better fortunately... hopefully soon as well.... and sell that bike :eyebrows:

So I am not even one fully finished unit into this venture but.........
The Bigbottle MM/MC switchable phonostage is in development!
After being asked numerous times about a MM version, I decided that we would provide one.
Same circuit as the current MC version but with a few changes to the front end to get the MM capability.

was the logical way initially, but a straight MM only sometime might be a good idea. where all the money goes into making as good an mm as possible. you could always design a mc ad-on later for it. its all good practice and might get you ahead of much of the competition. not many make really good mm's that also look good.(which to many is as important)

was the logical way initially, but a straight MM only sometime might be a good idea. where all the money goes into making as good an mm as possible. you could always design a mc ad-on later for it. its all good practice and might get you ahead of much of the competition. not many make really good mm's that also look good.(which to many is as important)The stage was initially a MM circuit. We added the MC later on when if got fed up of being unhappy with head Amps and suts.
It's just a case of incorporating the switch to put the MC side into the circuit. When it's switched to MM, it's in its original form.

ah, ok, good stuff... alas it probably comes too late for me as i have something coming. That's ok mate. It's a way off being ready. That's only the initial mock up. It needs loads of refinement. Won't see these boards for 3 - 6 month's, need a prototype to check all is well before committing to a group buy.
It's all money too.
Admittedly, can be done in a cheap wooden box but even the parts cost

Steve...Hi Steve,
Ok mate. Thank you.
Minimum order will be 5 boards so I'll definitely have one knocking about.
Hi Oliver
Thinking about parts etc , looked at the build guide and the
Transformer spec is:
• Primary 230V (or your local rating of supply 110v/220v/230v etc), SEC1 = 165V for the HV, SEC2 = 2x 9v
Which is fine but what about the Amp ratings?
Cheers Andy

Hi Andy,
It's this:
Primary: 240v
Secondary: 1x 165v 0.08
Secondary: 1x 9-0-9v 1A
great thanks

Alterations to BOM have been made to provide better performance in the RIAA figures. The changes here are essential to the performance of the phonostage.
Here they are:
Alterations:
R113.213 = 68K
R121.221 = 180K
R122.222.= 27K
C131.231 = DO NOT FIT!
If anyone requires a new copy of the BOM, just drop me a message.
This is the last change to this PCB.

Today finally saw me fit enough to pick up the soldering iron with intent.
Intent to put my desired Capacitors into the phonostage. I'd been using some JFX caps bought from HiFi Collective. They are very cheap and quite honestly, they are probably the most revealing things I've put in the position. However, they had very little midrange. Something I'm noting a lot recently is the Mid-bass area. I decided to try a firm Favourite of mine. Mundorf EVO aluminium in oil caps.
I've used these a few time now and I am always very happy with their performance. It's a very balanced sound and exactly what I'm looking for.
Had to re locate another cap to fit these monsters in.
Hopefully when they've run in they will be the final little mod I'll be doing to this box.
Not the neatest job by any means but being well and truly inhibited by the soon to be re-broken hand, I am happy it works at all lol
I'll tidy it up when I'm finally better. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190301/71cf5b98c449d57fc3bcf91546c51e74.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190301/fce5228353def46c28aba999f2c7c20a.jpg

Yes, I believe so. It was suggested by a couple of guys over on DIY. Just make sure it's not vibrating in the chassis!!

I have had good results with R cores in the past and I will mount it on a sound deadening sheet and bond the frame to the transformer if it is noisy

Good morning all.
I've Nearly completed Oliver's Bigbottle build and will soon be ready to order the transformer. The rest of the parts have just arrived and will be fitted the weekend.
Can anyone supply a link to the ones you have used please as I'm struggling a bit to find a suitable one as I'm a complete noob.
Anyway here's a pic of where I am upto at the moment.

http://i66.tinypic.com/opr6ex.jpgHi Nathan,
Looks great! Did you get the revisions to the part values earlier in the thread? IIRC those green capacitors have been emitted and a couple of reisitor values have changed slightly to provide a more accurate riaa curve.
There is a link to the Transformer DIY Audio which costs about £20
I'll try and find the link later.
Hi Oliver,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes I did see the revisions but thought I'd try getting this up and running first then make the changes at a later date.
If you could find the link I'd appreciate it.
Nathan.

Good morning all,
Would the power supply in the link be suitable or is there another you would recommend.

Yes that transformer is suitable, I have used the same one myself.
However there is a caveat. The tx isn't a toroid so the magnetic field is greater, unless you shield it very effectively or have a large case so it can be positioned far from the MC inputs you may have problems with induced hum.
Also with the construction a lot of these examples have a low mechanical hum/buzz to them. If you want silence then look elsewhere.

If you want total silence, you must either use Toroidy.Pl or similar custom toroid manufacturer.
Avoid Airlink. the last three I had from there have a mechanical hum which I hate with a vengeance.
The one in your link is fine but as Alan said some shielding will be required. Loads available in China for £10 and they work really well.

I got a potted one from toroidy for about £60 more expensive than some but good quality and good service from them. You have to email them and they'll send you a quote etc as it's not part of their normal range.

Hi Sharin, Oli is no longer posting on this forum.
Is that a bit of a Christmas flounce over the “Boris Big Win” thread? Another reason why (IMO) discussion of politics (and religion) should be banned...
Oh dear sorry to learn that . I hope all s well ...
Alan, the phonostage is your design i believe.
I m looking to upgrade from a Project job with 2 valves sticking out of it.
My soldering skills are not bad. Feel this device would be something I could build.

Me too., It's a sad day when we lose guys like Oli.
Way too much emphasis, time, energy and passion spent on those emotive other things, politics, Abstract chat etc - It's a hifi forum.....
There was a time when this forum was a really special place to be, focusing on what you expect to find in the tin - hifi, now I feel we've lost our way a bit - shame, hopefully we'll get back to that.
I learned so much invaluable hifi related stuf, over the years, through joining here, lets get back to basics and the fundamentals of what this place is meant to be about and built it's reputation on, as a great place to be for lovers of hifi and music - please ! otherwise I sense others will depart too, out of sheer frustration, lack of interest and due to that not so nice feeling you get when someone who's contributed greatly and felt part of the AOS family, aint gonna be around anymore, what ever that reason might be
I am now the proud owner of this Phono Stage and its a great performer in my system.
Project Perspex 6SB, Yaqin MS-30L , Tannoy Revolution XT-F6.
Quite a simple unit to use with limited tweaking but the sound is just right. Nothing emphasized and vey smooth to my ears.
Room is 4m x 5m approx and it works OK although I am considering some treatment when I've read up a bit more.
Any advice on room treatment would be welcomed.
Did you buy from Oliver?
I am still weighing up my options so thank you for posting your opinion of yours
