View Full Version : The Utterly Ridiculous Prices being asked for GL 75s

Given I used to buy shedloads and have built and sold quite a few, you could say I'm a long time convert. A few of my d.i.y. efforts haven't given that much away to my Oracle. Horses for courses. However I find it ridiculous that I used to be able to buy them for a tenner of Ebay and rail at the shipping charges, which were inevitably more. Looking at the prices now, wish I still had a garage full of them:doh:
Once got offered as many ex Beeb 301's as I wanted for 70 quid each and a shedload (literally by an ex employee) of STD's for 200 quid, hindsight is a wonderful thing (which pillock coined that one, I wonder)

In 1993 I was shown into a room full of Lenco Gl75s and told I could take them all for nothing. I declined because at the time that was all they were worth. The folly of youth. At today's prices there was at least 2 grand in that room.

When I was a nipper, I had a full set of 'Mars Attacks!' chewing gum cards, including the banned ones. My sister was so horrified by one of these, showing a dog being burnt alive by an alien, that she tore the whole lot up and threw them away. At today's prices, they'd be worth a few bob. Not that I'm bitter, or have never forgiven my sister or anything. That would be ridiculous.

75's can still be had for <£100 which is a bargain. You try professionally making the motor, bearing and pressing a top plate for under a ton. You'd be politely shown the door.

On Lenco Heaven we have a thread called "Watching the price of Lencos" where we used to moan at being asked £80 for a Lenco! Prices have gone up but as Andrew says, at £100 they are still a bargain. Not too sure whether the prices being asked for 88's and 99's are though and don't ask about the price of the P77 tonearm. there's one on ebay at the moment for $3000  but of course it hasn't sold.

So do you think £10 is a reasonable price for a Lenco GL75?

It amazes me that a common or garden record player like the GL75, which I had in '64/5, should not only be coveted but spawn a forum ! It was okay, but way behind the 401, 301 and TD 124, the former of which I had later. The G75 (?) arm wasn't up to much, and the G88 (?) I had afterwards seemed a better deck, on which I put either an ADC wooden arm ?) or a Decca FF or International.

However, if you consider £500 + new as the base point for an acceptable deck, the old 60s stuff does look like good value.

How much do you think it would cost to build a GL75 nowadays?

Think my point was instead of paying the silly asking prices these days, you could buy something perfectly acceptable plug and play, without all the faff of new plinths, rebuilt motors, better bearings etc. I used to bin most of the parts from the ones I bought as all I wanted was the platter, bearing, idler arm/wheel and motor.
Took to buying just these bits as it was way cheaper until you realise half the folks selling them were binning wee important parts like motor springs, idler arm post which became like Hen's teeth

Lenco: Still the best bang for the buck though! :)

I had a 301 and my Lenco GL75 was not way behind, in fact I thought it was better!

Just bought a GL70 for £25, a going over and lubrication and it will be good. I've removed the arm as its not the best and will make a decision whether to mauler the plinth or make a subtle change to the arm mounting hole to mount a Stax 9" arm I have. I've been down the " throw money " at one and yes it was as good as my 401 but won't get your money back. It's very rare that examples around £1500-2000 will sell. Even at £500 you will struggle to get a sale.

Well its 2022 and prices continue to rise, I paid £200 for a working GL75 and that was at the low end of the pricing.

Lets face it, the older things get, the rarer they get and with something of interest, rarity itself spurs things along.

So yes, prices will continue to rise.

Lencos still make the basis for a good quality TT project though.
A bit of TLC and attention to the aging cosmetics is quite often all that is needed, as the stock item is pretty good.
But if you start looking at different arms, plinths etc, it has great potential and luckily, there are still plenty donor decks and parts to be had.

Before I realized this potential, I saw a lot of three GL75's plus spares, go for a fiver at an auction house in Hereford, that was 2018. Doh!

I have just picked up a GL75 a couple of days ago. It wasn’t working, but a bit of tlc and a new idler wheel rubber and it’s spinning like new.
Sounding fantastic hooked up to my Scott HH 299c.
Not using an external phono stage and i cannot be happier.
Time to release the paradise phono stage I think.

The Scott will be a fair age, similar to the Lenco?
Looks cool.

I've been happily using my GL75 everyday for the past 8 years or so. It was an very nice upgrade from the Linn LP12/Lingo I had before.
Upgraded main bearing, custom plinth, stacked platters, new lengthened spindle, upgraded arm. (shown with Ortofon Cadenza Black).

I use a 35w EL34 tube amp for mids/twts and a 700w class D for my 12" bass drivers, works well.
The PrimaLuna Tube amps are superb, great sound and good value. Designed in Holland, built in China, with point to point wiring.

Dave could you kindly put up a pic or 2 of yr upgraded L75 ( or is it just me that cannot see images)
me looking for ideas for my L75 project.
Lencos fetch good prices out here in the East too
i ve scored one recently in decent nick. would be nice simply restored but i have been influenced by a certain fella here so i am embarking
on a 'full' upgrade with new plinth, plates and arm.
