View Full Version : What turntable floats ones boat?

I know similar threads have been done on a few occasions so could be told off but thought I would run another as its a subject that always fascinates me as we all like different things, I run three turntable at present so dont believe there is a single solution but if one were to choose one what would it be.

Cost is is not to be a factor as I know many freinds who just dont like some of the hi end offerings as they feel they are too complex and OTT. Its more to do with what designs appeal and what would one be more than happy with as a final statement. Personal experiences on what one has heard is always a good thing.

Denon DP80, copper mat, Stax UA-70 12" arm, does it for me. Cannot think of a reason I would change it.

I have my modified Vantage Audio 1210/SME 309 /AT33EV.
But if I could I would have my Voyd. 5 reference back but continue to run the Technics as well, two very different sounding decks and I like both.

I have done that many times missed something I sold and on occasion bought the same back, I wish I still had my Goldmund Reference I had from new in the 80,s always nice to have variety. I owned Voyd Reference with Cylene and I0 LTD too great deck indeed wish I had that today The Voyd Reference with noisy motors and once a psu issue gave me a bit of trouble had to have it changed three times, still loved it. I also owned a oxford crystal Reference never liked it at all maybe as I had a sme V on it did sound good with the Air Tangent but was beyond my budget at the time and the air pump scared me off back then. There the so many interesting deck back then which one could aspire to own these days one has to take out a second mortgage and still not sure if one would really get real pleasure from the purchase.

I've lived with a Townshend Elite Rock II + Heed Orbit PSU for the past few years. After the ins and outs of a Xerxes, 401 and PL-71 I think she's the best all-rounder in terms of sound, maintenance and value.

This has been my vinyl playing chum since I rescued it from a junk shop and brought in back to life back in the early '80s
As I fell in love with the Dieter Rams design long before I found it, I have never felt the need to replace - just repair and apply TLC when needed :)

Those TTs of which I have direct experience, that is, use in my system:

EMT 930st
Thorens TD124 Mk.II

Those TTs which I have borrowed and tried in my system:

Linn LP12 (Basic model without upgrades)
Goldring G99

Pickup arms used by me in my system:

Breuer Dynamic Type 5A
Brinkmann 10.5
Ortofon 309i (improved by Ikeda)
EMT 929

SME M12-R
SME 3012 Mk.II
SME 3009 Mk.II
SME 3009/S2 (Improved)

Infinity 'Black Widow' Mk.II
Audio & Design (later known as Keith Monks) M9BA
Decca ffss Super (only used with Decca Mk.III and Mk.IV heads).

But regarding your question as to which decks would interest me today, well I would be interested in the following:

EMT 938 (modified to take an SME V)
Denon DP100 (with the integral arm removed and arm mount adapted to take a 9" arm)
Technics SP10

and possibly

EMT 928.

I have a 1986 Rock II that I have owned from new, I have had to swap out the sorbothane blobs underneath as they squash over time and I have serviced the bearing a couple of times. Other than that it has been a fantastic TT, it has a moth RB250 fitted that has the OL structural mod and has been fettled by Audio Origami (rewire, foam fill and earth mod).

2nd TT that I also like and use is a Luxman PD264 that I rescued from going to the skip, it had no arm or perspex lid and the base was warped, I replaced the base with 6mm MDF and fitted a Hadcock GH228 that has been rewired with VdH wire and now has a Shure V15/III with a jico Neo SAS/SS fitted.

I like both of these TTs although they sound very different.

I also have a stock Planar 3 from 1978.

Which Micro Seiki deck? A picture would be good ;)

How do you like the SME V-12?

Micro Seiki 8000 mkii I have owned three V-12 arms the fisrt was purchased in 2009 with a sme 30/12 this sounded a bit flat and boring and could not align a cartridge using anything but a sme protractor I sold it and bought a thales, I bought another v-12 new and it sounded totally different much more open I had it kondo wired later, I then got the Seiki and put the arm on there it was great but came across the Kondo badged v-12 while in Japan which was double the price and this sounds way way better than my Sme v-12 kondo wired arm. In my opinion sme arms are a bit hit and miss like most things hand made to be honest as I know others who say the same. I once owned two graham phantom tonearms and they sounded so different. I am convinced with sme arms its down to the sample.

Thanks I like the 8000 alot it proved to be a good buy very big and powerful sounding, I also have a EMT 927 a bit overated but still a nice bit of kit and my trusty sme 30/12 thales simplicity combo which is a good match the sme sme combo is a bit much in my opinion the V-12 it should be warmer and fuller sounding than a 310, the 310 will be a bit more dynamic. How old is your V-12? did you buy it new? again comes down to sample. You have a lovely turntable will certainly be a interesting combo with the V-12.

I have an EMT927 too, although I don't use it a lot. I also have a grease bearing Garrard 301 serviced and rebuilt but still boxed up and waiting for me to get around to building it up again.

The deck I've been using for the last year or so is a Thorens TD124 Mk2 with a Mission tonearm modified to use a Decca Mk4 head. I like it very much although I think the 301 is slightly more dynamic. I'm wedded to Decca cartridges now but I'm still looking for the ultimate tonearm for them - was considering a Graham Phantom so would be interested to hear your thoughts on the two you owned.

Apart from a static issue which I need to get to the bottom of, the thing that bothers me most is the 'vinyl roar' I get with the Decca. But I wonder if reducing it would just mean getting less of the music too? I am convinced that the Deccas just get more out of the grooves than anything else, although they don't sugar-coat it.

EMT decks are in my opinion limited by the 929 arm, or in the case of the 927, the Ortofon RF arms supplied to EMT before they developed their own. I wouldn't describe them as 'agricultural' but they are unsophisticated and are certainly not versatile (I own and use an EMT 930 with 929 arm and various TSD cartridges).

Most of the time I use one of three Thorens TD124/II decks, variously fitted with Breuer, Brinkmann or 12" Ortofon and SME arms.

Decca cartridges must be the most cantankerous cartridges ever made. I have five of them, of various vintages, and they all have to be pampered. The most 'trouble free' arm to use is Decca's own, but others can be used if you take care and experiment with the arm wiring, as well as SRA (difficult because the Decca has virtually no cantilever to speak of).

So have you used a Decca with a Phantom? Or even with a Mission 774?

I've used a Decca London in a damped Mission 774 and it's a great combination. But not a straightforward one as the Decca cartridge mounting block is threaded, as is the 774 arm head, so one set of threads or the other has to be drilled out. Fortunately, one of my Mission arm tubes has a head block that is drilled through, allowing bolts down into the cartridge mounting threads..

I have had few Graham Tonearms over the years going back to the 1.0 than a 2 and 2.2 a few phantoms and a phantom supreme and a Elite and still have a phantom 111 that I am about to sell.

I quite like them but have found the sample variation great and not so great build quality so would only buy new and expect the dealer to send back if not right the Elite and phantom 111 are great arms very open and great air and space, I still like sme arms again a bit hit and miss the good thing with sme after sales and easy to get sorted out sme are superb to deal with. I have the axiom arm that works well with the Decca london reference I have but hardly use also my V-12 sounds great too.

Thanks for expanding on your thoughts. Big and powerful sounding is a good description of the TTS-8000. As you say it should be interesting to hear the Sony/V-12 combo. I bought my V-12 from a dealer a couple of months ago. The story was that the original owner bought it for a project that never came to fruition and so the arm was never mounted or used. It certainly looks totally mint. I'm not sure of its age but it has a 59xxx serial number so must be relatively recent. I should be getting the plinth in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed that my V-12 is a good example and I get a good outcome in terms of SQ.

You are lucky in a sense you don't have another V-12 to compare so should be fine and am sure you will love your new turntable. I am currently considering a new turntable as I might be downsizing my house so will have some spare funds. :lol:Think he's his biggest customer and she says the Rockport are his personal collection, he does have many other regular brands such as sme, kodo, techdas and others which he sells. Not many dealers these days seem enthusiastic to have a system at home so good on him I say.

I used to visit Branko of audio freaks at home some years back. I always admired him for having a system consisting of many items that he did not stock and of course a few he did.

So have you used a Decca with a Phantom? Or even with a Mission 774?

No. I have only used a Decca Mk.III and Mk.IV (H4E) in a Decca ffss Super arm, and the SC4E, three Mk.Vs, as well as a Mk.VI in an Infinity 'Black Widow' arm, as well as various SME 3009s (all fitted with a damping dashpot). And briefly in a Keith Monks M9BA arm (a unipivot design, which of necessity is damped).

Of all these arms, setting up a Decca cartridge in the Decca arm was the most 'straightforward' and trouble free, but probably not offering the most optimum operating environment. Acoustically, the best arrangement in my experience was with a 'good' sample of a Decca Mk.V ('Blue') mounted in a heavy Sumiko headshell and fitted to an SME 3009 (non-improved) arm with light damping.

I’ve been quite happy with my VPI Scout, but one turntable I’ve been looking at lately is the Scheu Laufwerk. If I could find a used one for a reasonable price I could see me buying one. Even some of the less expensive Scheu ‘tables are quite impressive.

I’ve always fancied a Triplanar tonearm, but used ones are rare and new ones are expensive! And Reed is also very appealing, again, expensive. But when I win the lotto look out!

The Sheu turntables seem to make nice music compared to many of the german manufacturers who tend to err on the lean and clean side of things but always superbly built.

I heard the Laufwerk with the Reed tonearm and a Airtight cartridge sounding very enjoyable indeed.

I owned a Triplanar in the 90s with a Kuzma reference I was a Audio freaks customer back then I found the build quality a bit flaky the I could never tighten the VTA tower enough it would wobble I was always convinced if that was a bit more solid it would improve things greatly. The midrange was very enjoyable but the bass being very soft and rounded indeed very spacious sounding. I reverted to a Kondo wired Sme V with Kondo arm lead which maybe not as spacious and open the overall sound was more even and solid with a well founded bass that I liked without being aggressive.

The more recent Triplanars have improved greatly in terms of build the new owner has put in so much attention to detail the arm feels much more solid, much easier to adjust and the lift lower now works flawlessly I still continue to hear some of that that softness in the bass its kind of rounded but still enjoyable.

I heard the 12 inch model recently in a system I am familiar with, and it was interesting it had a huge soundstage with solid vocals and lots of weight maybe still lacking a bit down bellow. Turntable and tonearm combinations are so interesting but so so difficult all about compromise getting the right cartridge to work is not easy either.

My current deck is a Nakamichi TX-1000 with SME 309 and Clearuadio MC Essence and it's very probably the best deck I have ever heard overall, although the Sony PS-X9 I also have runs it incredibly close, and betters it the bass.

But if I really had to keep only one, it would have to be my Garrard 301. Still sounds wonderful and it's a treasured possession as well, as it was bought new by my late uncle in 1964.

I have owned many in the past but then after a long break from Hi-Fi decided to come back into the fold, and having researched this table 3 years ago I decided to hunt one down and so built my current system around it.
In my search I signed up to 10 Hi-Fi forums both here in the U.K. North America and Germany, All the Auction websites, and many search sites, In 3 years had 4 possible's, 2 of which turned out to be fake, One had already sold just as I made the enquiry, and the last one was a link to a Canadian site which turned out to be the one, to say that I am happy with it is an understatement and well worth the effort.

A guy at this year's Wam Show at Kegworth had one, I think an Acutus. I recall he brushed it slightly with his hand and the suspension was so fluid that it mesmerised me by taking about a minute to settle down again. Could have been the choice of music but it had a really entertaining sound, one of those moments where you forget there's equipment involved and just get lost in the music.

It has to be admired that Avid own the engineering business where there turntables are made everything is in house and after sales support is excellent.

Maybe your right mark I thought Jack reduced the price at one point as he had no dealers to generate more sales, it then became a interesting proposition. I kind of remember him starting at the 9k mark but found them hard to sell. One of those and a sme m12r with a nice spu and bobs your uncle.

Mark,

I suspect that it was probably due to the fact that few people in the UK are prepared to buy brand new high end hi-fi from a dealer, preferring instead to scour the second hand market. I doubt that many people on this forum or indeed any UK hi-fl forum would be willing to spend £9k on a TT motor unit. I bought mine as an ex demo unit from GT back in the 90s. The agricultural looks of the motor unit probably don't help either in today's WAF stakes. If Nari is serious about a PV, I imagine that GT might be able to supply a new PV and instal it in Knightsbridge (you need to make sure that the magnets are set up properly).

Perhaps he did - I know he offered interest free credit on it and he must have paid that interest (so essentially a discount). With the remote motor pod it does need quite a lot of space and for some this would be a deal breaker.

I am already heavily invested with my three decks the Micro Seiki 8000 and the EMT 927 and the sme sme 30/12. If I were in the market at that level I would consider one strongly as its a fine deck for the money.

I suspect that in the 90s and early 2000s when GT audio were selling them for £5500 the market was hard for turntables I know quite a few who have invested in serious rigs here in the uk. The gt battery power supply for the turntable certainly made it interesting. I am sure with the right kind of clients and enthusiastic approach they could be sold.

I would be quite happy with a Denon DP-100, but with a different arm.

http://www.thevintageknob.org/denon-DP-100.html

Although developed for the domestic market, the Denon DP-100M (a Denon DP-100 fitted in a bespoke plinth) was intended to be a valid competitor to the EMT 950 in professional broadcast studios.

Or, as mere caprice, I would try to seek out an EMT 927D (a precision built 927 for laboratory use with a glass slip platter, replacing the acetate slip platter) or an EMT 929F (capable of supporting two 12" arms); both with modern arms of my choosing.

Hi Barry,

I have the Denon DP-100M variant, which came with the tonearm. You are right about the unit in the Hifido link; the oil filled shocks and springs are missing, which is a pretty significant omission. The 40mm thick top plate sits on the spring/shock arrangement, to improve damping and stability. Over time, the shocks can leak, which I'm guessing is what happened here...worth trying to fix, I would say, as a DP-100 without this is severely hamstrung.

As for the turntable itself, it is quite a remarkable unit. The motor is the size of a sandcastle bucket, and handles the sprung/damped platter with ease. I built a surround for the turntable, as mine did not come with the optional DK-1000 surround. I used a Macassar ebony veneer with a deep gloss finish. It makes the turntable an even bigger beast, but there is no getting away from its size anyway, so in for a penny! :)

Sound - of the decks I own, it is ***probably*** the most accomplished, but I've never done a bake off using the same cartridge on the different tables, so I'd have to hold off on a definitive answer. Each deck does its own thing, but I like them all...the DP-100M is a pretty special beast, though.

I can't comment on the arm as such. It is beautifully made and has a more rudimentary (than the Sony Biotracer) form of electronic vibration damping , which I find has worked wonders with a Decca C4E I have on the deck at the moment. I have no doubt that a top modern arm would do pretty special things...or even something rare and beautiful like a Breuer...but the Denon arm is more than adequate for my needs. If I did change it, I would make sure it could be re-fitted properly. I found some images of a 100M, where the arm had - it would seem - been ripped out; wires cut in such a way as to make a reverse very difficult if not impossible. That said, if that's what you want to do to your own deck, then crack on!

I'll try to get an image uploaded...been a while since I've done it, so I need to refresh my memory.

Enjoying the thread immensely...some beautiful decks out there!

Best Wishes,

Paul.

Barry

Hi Paul,

You are fortunate indeed to possess a Denon DP-100. Yes, we would love to see some photos of your DP-100.

When I said I would replace the arm; I would of course do it sympathetically as well as bypassing the built-in phonostage, such that both could be restored at a later date should I wish.

I have owned many of the Tom flecher turntables mainly in the 90s always enjoyed them I had the the Space and Hyperspace the mentor and a mentor reference I also owned a anna which I really loved, I remember fondly meeting Tom at the Penta Shows which then became the Ramada with martin bastin. During that period there were so many great turntables one could aspire to owning such as the Pink triangle anni and the rock reference the Alphason sonata. I remember Max townshend demonstrating a Rock Reference being played at 90 degrees. The turntable that sticks in my mind was the Goldmund st4 with a kisiki lapis lazuli it was truly glorious. These days because of such a small market the prices are insane.

Not sure about the first one, but the others are:

EMT 950 (narrow consol version)

EMT 950 (narrow consol version)

Gates CB-77 turntable with Gray research arm (a 108/ or one of its many clones)

BBC RP consol using a Garrard 301 and another BBC design arm

Denon (?) - now that one has me stumped. The TT looks it's based on the DP100 fitted with a stand-alone Denon arm.

A man with taste I have had the pleasure of listening to one against an continuum at a dealers place, its an extra ordinary beast so effortless the finest turntable i have ever heard. I found the Rockport with the same cartridge in the same system to have quite the edge over the Continuum arms were different so to get a clearer idea would. Unfortunately only 30 were ever produced and the price went crazy. Sadly don't think its one I will ever own.

Would like to oblige, bit of a hassle with the IPad though.
However, a trip (involves registration) over to www.tapeheads.net ought to provide many images of contemporary turntables etc., just go to the pair of turntable galleries, #2 is the most up to date and there are tonearm and cartridge sections as well.

I prefer the look of a turntable that has a compact footprint and is understated, so my choices, both Swiss designs, are the Lumen White Mystere with either a Bluelectric Altair or Breuer Dynamics 8C tonearm. Alternatively, the Thales TTT Compact II sporting their new statement arm would do just fine. The De Baer Saphir/Onyx combination looks intriguing too.

Larger tables that do not look as if they’ve been to the gym but still hold great appeal are the Swedish Disc Rotator deck and the American Wave Kinetics NVS Reference

Also have a hankering for a new idler design and the British made SMD Acoustics V2.0 fits the bill very nicely.

chrome switches etc. And best of all its in mint condition with the wood and lid looking particularly stunning. I also have a chopped up version with mayware tonearm and Decca cart.

An early Verdier Platine with the composite base; after the granito and before the MDF. If you defeat the suspension you can mount the motor close to the platter. I had purpose made feet but you can use some wood blocks to see if it works for you. The motor is battery driven. The composite and granito bases are drilled for one arm, whilst the mdf base can cope with two. It is similar to Charlie's but with upgraded baring etc. As I noted in a previous thread I have had it for a number of years now and do not see the point in changing it

i have it going through a paradise phono stage and for me its end game now,the pioneer just sits sadly in the corner unused which is a shame as its a great tt in its own right,it may be for sale in the new year.

Looks fab Jamie, bet it sounds great ! :) remind us of the cart you're using ?

Thanks, It maybe the only one in existence with the factory wall mount, I think only 3 were made, I may be wrong

I think there were more, as I am sure there are a few here in NI, plus a few floor versions here as well.
