The early 2000's Fiat 500 is quite a reasonable looking car, especially in black with siver tailgate and wheel arches (either a special or customised). It happily accommodated a Dad who's 6' 4" with no trouble. Wonderful for pootling locally and for the school run.

I have to admit I'm a Jag and Bentley man. The "Double Six" my then manager had was an awsome thing to be driven home in - far better than the Roller of the period (I went in both) it was whisper quiet and supremely smooth, but VERY thirsty.

Another old favourite (I owned two) was the Rover P6 3500"S" manual one. A gearbox was irrelevant as you could pull away from rest in third gear. Later ones were de-tuned a little for 4 star petrol, but the originals pre '73 could be animals if the suspension had the "Police" rear springs and dampers.... Not one for hurling around though when compared to the SD1, which was heaven or hell depending on which sample you owned.

Those were the glorious days before CAD (Computer-Aided Design) robbed all vehicles of their individuality.... :(

Now everything looks the bloody same.... Another example of freakin' computers eroding our 'human-ness'! :rolleyes:

Yup - but CAD has got a lot to do with it, too... I don't see why they can't combine good aerodynamics with genuine individual design flair, though - and I'm talking about 'ordinary' affordable cars, here. Basically, everything looks like it's come out of the same (boring and repetitive) generic mould. Modern cars simply lack 'soul', and the 'fun factor' has largely gone out of driving.

There's no arguing however that today's cars handle eons better, are much more economical and vastly safer than their vintage counterparts, but where my 'beef' lies is in the almost total absence of individual design flair, and the use of bloody moulded plastic and cheap materials everywhere (even in many 'luxury' cars) - I abhor this with a passion!

What happened to the likes of solid walnut fascias, real leather seats, and chrome bumpers and wheels as standard? Of course I know, but you can see what I'm getting at - declining standards.

All we get now is cheap mass-produced shite in all but the most expensive cars! :rolleyes:

agreed ... as i said before both me and hannah prefer older cars (although she does want a new fiat 500) id rather have 5 "crappy" old cars than one new nice one!

How about a Triumph TR7 V8? Very reminiscent of the Fiat X19 in styling. They used to build these down the road from me in Liverpool whe I was a kid so you'd see a lot of them about. You can buy them totally restored - the original electrics were the worst problem with 'em. Classic crappy British seventies sports car. But it does have pop-up headlights. Every car should.:)

The styling may have been (I had a mk1 1800 model), but it was a crude and noisy thing inside, despite the great cabin ambience in the early ones before they "normalised" it.

My first car was me dad's old Triumph 1500, replaced with a 1500TC, replaced with a Dolomite 1850, replaced with the first Rover...

I still had a craving for a Dolly Sprint after my fondly remembered 1850 Dolomite, so I got one - RKR488R in the same colour as in the pic (it lived in Harpenden for years before it eventually fell apart in the mid nineties as I recall). I HATED the bloody thing after the Rover and discovered you really had to drive it in anger to make it go - ie, thrash the thing! My Sprint had a whiny diff, which was judged normal (cured if you got the much needed Salisbury limited slip one) and the handling was as twitchy as the motor press said..

I still love the triumph interiors from those days. The Shag (apologies), 2000/2500 and Dolomite style inside was really cool IMO. i still wonder what fuel injection, modern construction of engine and body and bigger wheels and tyres, as well as a wider track which would modernise the styling a bit, would do to a Dolly...

Ah, rose tinted memories........ Like the HiFi, I've had a car or three, none of them really class leading except the Rovers at the time..

Crap build quality but once you got over the 'whacky styling, everything had its purpose. The early CX had revolving drum instruments behind lenses, which looked a bit odd, but the clever bit was the eye focussed at exactly the same distance as the road in front, so no waiting for the eye to adjust. Similarly, half the switchgear was hidden, but once learnt, totally intuitive. Fully powered steering and the ability to change a wheel without a jack, too! Those cars breathed and occasionally bled - fantastic things. I now want a C6 after suffering the awful ride quality of an otherwise excellent BMW.

Actually, a BX GT was good, keeping the finger controls and non-cancelling indicators, but with conventional dials and the lovely supple suspension. You need a Citroen enthusiast nearby though and I'm out of touch with cheap suppliers of recharged suspension spheres etc...

Lovely cars though and the steel was a basically non-rusting quality if looked after.

Ashley james had an XM prestige for a while and the way that thing handled in his hands on Gloucestershire lanes was amazing for such a large car.

I've had 3 Dolomites - the second one I had I bought from a guy called John Lennon (not that one!). The Sprint was bought from a guy who'd spent many thousands restoring it including putting a new (not rebuilt) engine in it. He even took it to Morgan for them to put new vinyl on the roof.

Lots of firsts in the Sprint - alloy wheels, alloy engine, 16 valves.......and a very clever engine design. A proper wolf in sheep's clothing.
I hate cars, but I can't help loving old Triumphs!

if the Sprint engine was built now, it would have been extremely reliable. I'm told that the Stag should have had the Rover Buik derived engine in it, but the engine they used was an eight cylinder Dolly engine instead. Madness and typical British Leyland at the time.

I thought the Dolly 1850 the best of this model myself, and the 2.5PI was awsome once the injection system was sorted (needed a specialist though).

There is a theory that they were going to try to put the big Triumph engine under the Dolly bonnet because all the right wrinkles are there in the bodywork for it to fit. One or two people have done it & drops straight in. It's apparently a bit of a ..............well you can imagine, can't you!

I actually liked the Montego and its smaller stablemate (forget the name right now), as they were very light and bright inside (the Golf was dark, hard and dingy back then). A shame they were so badly made and unreliable..

A Stag engine in a Dolomite body - Oh gawd, it's almost as bad as the Ford Escort RS1600i or the yuppy deathtrap that was the Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 - a truly ghastly, noisy and uncomfortable car that lurched in traffic and went its own way on windy rainy days - often into the paths of oncoming vehicles.....

TurdelTurdel...The Pacer looked like a tarareum on wheels.
The AMC Gremlin was much more fun,I had a crazy freind who's father owned an wrecking yard.
He put an independant Jaguar rearend,ford pinto independant front end M22 rock crusher 4 speed tranny and a pollished and ported,blue printed and ballanced 327 with 4 duces and cable linkage.with a very stock and miss matched body in sevral differant shades of rusty primer.He even had stock rims.The only give away if you looked closely where the speed rated Goodyear Eagle GT raceing tires and duel exhaust.
His car looked like a $200.00 reck but could take a new Corvette with ease.

My first car was a Alfasud like this one, it rusted as you watched and eventually caught fire in the middle of Queens Road in Brighton, the drivers door didn't work so i had to climb over and undo the window on the passenger side and let myself out as the bonnet bubbled and turned black as the flames grew bigger :eek: it popped back through the carb and set the air filter alight, luckaly a passing taxi put out the fire with a fire extinguisher put it out but that was the end of it.

I first saw one of these in the flesh in about 1973/74 in Clapham Junction where I was dragged up. The one I saw was in red and looked like it had dropped from outer space. Imagine the dagenham dustbins that were around at the time that looked like they were a 100years old in comparison. I missed being an owner,when I was 18 years old I fell in love with the town Barbers Hudson I saved the $1,200 but missed it by 2 days I didn't know he lowered the price and sold it for $1,000 to a guy before I got payed,he would have gotten his full price and I would have been happy .It was a 1950 and had the big 308 with the twin carb pack seen in the you tube video.The car was dark green with moehair seats.This was a true Hemi before Dodge.

My memory was wrong though they where all streight 6 but the motor went way up in cubic inches and horsepower after 1950.
I always liked the chopped upside down bath tub look and the Hudson was nicer than the 50 Merc.

I like the Rover P5 but have only seen one here in a car show a real trailer qween,guy never drives it .
I also love vintage Jaguar's like the E and C type.

A mate had one. It was ex-French army with 24 volt electrics, mounting points for radio set & machine gun! He couldn't get anything other than 3rd party only insurance because it couldn't be made secure & if it caught fire it would melt!
No seat belts, but that was OK because he reckoned your best chance of survival in an accident would be to be thrown as far clear as possible!!!!

Actually, the Maxi was sort of so uncool it was cool (it wasn't really, was it?!) but it was so comfortable! (I had the HLS with velour seats and a teak dash!) Luckily I never had any street cred anyway, so my car was the least of my worries! :lol:

(I learned to drive in a Series 1, and have a Defender 110 now as a toy, so Landy's are in the blood - I'm always on the look out for another Series 1 and have "permission" as long as I sell my motor bike...)

It's a 1947 Rover 12 Tourer, a very rare beast, since only 200 were built.

A lot of the immediate pre and post-war output from the British motor industry was pretty hum-drum, but I always thought the P2 Rovers had a nice understated elegance. The first car I ever used regularly was a 1947 16 like this: http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh90/1947rover/DSC00385-1.jpg , which I loved dearly (so did a number of young ladies, but that's another story), but the 12 Tourer was a little more rakish. My brother and his mate had 7 different P2s in the 60's; the 12 was the most expensive, at £12/9/6d. I saw one advertised a while ago at over 10 grand. Ah me...

Here's one that fits the thread title. Ford Scorpio Ultima Cosworth. 2.9 litre chain drive. Very quick car. Back when I worked in vehicle leasing a mate asked me if I could sort him a decent motor to commute up and down to London in. The next day a bloke who owned one asked me if I could find a buyer...

Sadly reliabilty is an issue with certain key parts especially if you thrash it continually and my mate thrashed it continually (he had it up to 150MPH) and killed it in six months.

At number 5, I always thought the design of these deserved more attention than they got, the wedge shape being quite advanced for the time: I would definitely like to own one, but would have to be a) cheap b) brown or bronze and c) a Vanden Plas! (I wonder when brown/bronze will come back again for car colours, like white suddenly has?)

This has to qualify as slightly crappy but also awesome in a total failure kind of way, the 1966 F1 BRM 3 litre H16. Essentially 2 1965 1.5 litre V8s flattened out and joined together, never really worked, way too heavy and complicated, totally unreliable but what a fabulous idea.

As a kid I lived next to Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool and every Tuesday evening the West Lancs Motor Club would meet there and run their sports cars on the club circuit, you could just walk in and hang round the paddock and look at all the motors close up, there was everything from Lotus 7s, Jag D-types, Rochdale Olympic (!) etc. there.
One early spring evening, a big dark van turned up and and there it was, the new F1 BRM, no security or anything like that, and away it went, out onto the far straight and the test driver floored it, what a noise, fantastic.

My History teacher first had a Bond 'Equipe' but later bought one of those Simca 1100's....I actually know a lad who has one of those DAF '66's in brown he has an old Singer 'Gazelle Arrow' aswell..They may have been crap cars to some but they have a hell of a lot more character compared to the shit you buy/see today. Character has nothing to do with crappyness although they do coincide sometimes. I like character - that's one of the reasons I still own a 1973 Triumph Dolomite Sprint, but I still recognise it has certain crappy traits.
Modern cars have almost no character, but they start in cold weather & you know you're going to get where you want to go unless you have a prang. In which case you stand a better chance of surviving. That's the reason I also own a characterless crappy modern car.

i had two NSU prinz,
the first was the four cylinder model, the last one [i still had it in the early 1990's] was the two cylinder one,in the end i gave it away to an organisation who were helping people get back into work by training them to be mechanics.
the NSU RO80 had the wankel engine fitted [rotary valve] which was a good design but very problematic due to rapid wear of the rota tips. however, NSU gave 100% guarantee on the engines, so it meant that as long as you owned the car, if the engine failed they would replace it! aparently when RO80 owners used to pass each other on the road they would hold their fingers up, indicating the number of engine replacements they were on!:doh:

Rose tinted specs mate - in the case of hi-fi. You're only recalling the good stuff but there was plenty of very dodgy stuff being sold then. Do you remember, (to take one example) hardboard rear panels on some amps in the seventies? I'm sure it was very highly specified hardboard, but it was still hardboard! Most of the crap largely ended up in the scrap pile where it belonged.

Our Focus will be ten years old next year (still with less than 50K on the clock) and I remember most 1970's family cars (except possibly Volvos) being riddles with rust spots, either from stone chips or rusting from within, after six years or so. I have one rust spot on the Focus and that is due to clumsy replacement a few years ago of a side mirror.

An ex had one of these. It was a total nightmare - to keep working - Favourite trick - stalling on busy roundabouts. It used to get stolen all the time until the joyriders discovered it was a piece of junk and ditch it. Not burn it out or ram it or anything so we could get the insurance - no - just ditch it and then the Police then rip you for £30 notes to get it back (this is twenty years ago god knows how much now).

In thew end it died completely - not worth the scrap - and so I got one of these for her at the auctions £170 (what a man:eyebrows:) Previous owner - British Army Of the Rhine, came with only the military docs had to send off to DVLA to register it.

70K on the clock would cruise for hours on the motorway and do a ton up no probs.
Only issue was because it had been some sort of undercover military police car they disabled the doorlocks and new ones cost more than the car. So we were never able to lock it but no-one ever pinched it. Nissan Sunny Coupe:

I did Brighton to Stoke one time as a passanger in an old mini. Properly old with 240,000 on the clock. I couldn't fall asleep because if I did then my legs would start to dangle through the enourmous hole in the passenger footwell. I saw bits and peices of that film but never the whole thing it was on a cable channel late at night.I remember them in the rain pretending to be in love because the owner of the house was a homosexual but wouldn't hit on them if they where a couple.

I don't get how you guys can make the best HiFi in the world but can't seem to make a switch or light socket for a car or bike,or make a wireing harness that isen't 6 inches to short,I had to extend the harness for my bike every time I made a couple of turns the huge harness of wires and plugs inside the headlight bucket would pull till they unpluged.I extended evry wire 4 inches and it solved the problem, brittish rubber is very soft and will rot fast,I replaced it all with Domi Racer and it all fit perfactly and no oil leaks,I also had to regasket the whole bike.Some day Id like to build up an old Norton 750.
