View Full Version : Vacuum cleaners an antidote to Brexit.
I have had about 5 vacuum cleaners over the last 30 years.
First up was a Hoover upright which had a bloated bag strapped inside a pouch dangling from the handle. It produced more dust than it sucked up so it was sent to Hoover heaven.
Next up was a second hand Hoover floating ball. It was a bit like a hovercraft and floated around on a cushion of air that was cunningly engineered from within the beast itself. I liked this. Ancient pedigree from the 1960's but attachments became scarce especially the hose which split and gentle covered the house in dust. Sent to Hoover heaven.
Third vacuum cleaner was another upright, again from the house of Hoover. This was an update of Hoover one with bag of dusty entrails but encased in hard shell. Probably due to EU regulations this device was throttled back so failed on its principle function. It could not suck up anything bigger than a grain of rice.
Frustration and motor noise sent this to Hoover heaven.
Fourth machine was a red bucket device with a smiling sinister face. This machine was the opposite of machine 3. It almost removed the carpets and was dangerous if the suction tube came near to anything delicate:eek: sent to hoover heaven as it created havoc and could not be controlled.
Finally a posh German device built like a tiger tank with a controllable motor. Ear defenders need to be worn on high settings. This device is still with me and seems to be in for the long haul as it shows no signs of breaking down or misbehaving.
Anyone got any Hoover horror stories they wish to share?

It is John. Nice machine.I inherited mine from my mum after she died. No way I was letting that go to the tip with most of the other stuff. At one time she had six cats and it was the only hoover that could get the carpets hair-free.

I had a few decent vacuum cleaners, including the 'aquavac' sort of thing, but these days I'm using an ultra cheapo effort from Tesco. It works brilliantly, bags of power, compact and light. The only negative is that removing the filter for a clean could be easier, but no big deal.
not heard of john vacuums.... ive currently got 3... upstairs is a hugely powered panasonic that is so powerful the cable gets hot, but is pretty poor at sucking via the bar, which is its main job, but from the hose you could hold a kid over a precipice safely lol..
main duties is my vax cylinder, which can wash too.. its very good for the money. third is an electric hand held for stairs etc and has a powered belt bar, and is very effective. had this for years and it looks like it will last forever. cant remember the make, but got it in argos in linlithow one winters day. does a great job of the car too..

lol, yup, but it wasnt an active decision; just worked out that way. the panasonic is well designed it everything bar its main use...hoovering carpets;) other than that its a work of mad genius. Put it upstairs to save me having to wait on someone heaving a hoover up for me. i got the vax in a swap with son as he had it for washing but it was too complicated so i swapped him my bissel. i dont wash much as ive no pets etc now, so use it downstairs as its remarkably good with the power head i bought from lidl for it. the stair one was got due to frustration of having to do stairs with a normal vacuum. this thing is great and the brush has a flip up window bar shield to allow brushing in to vertical or horizontal.
I've had a Miele upright since 2005 and it's as good today as it was then. Expensive to buy yes, but quality remains long after the price is forgotten :)

Anyway, hoovers. Can't remember how many, or which ones we've had. I have vague recollections of a cream-coloured Electrolux that didn't last long. We've had a Sebo Felix for about ten years.

Actually we had a Vax. The motor failed; we had a new motor fitted, and then that failed too. As W C Fields said: 'If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then give up. No sense being a damn fool about it'.

I now use a Miele vacuum cleaner. Quiet, powerful and efficient - and not expensive. Only disadvantage is the dust bags are a bit pricy. Best vacuum cleaner i've ever had, though a friend speaks well of VAX. Wouldn't touch a Dyson: over-priced, over-hyped and not that reliable.
Before that I used a couple of upright Hoovers, did the job but the dust bags would often split with unfortunate results.

I picked up a Miele C3 earlier this year and it's definitely the best hoover I've had. I've got 2 cats and it gives the carpet a good deep cleaning. I didn't find it to be too pricey either, it was under £200 and my old Vax was still around £150 and it packed in after 2 years.
The bags last ages too. I hoover the whole house once a week and a bag will last a good 6-8 weeks. It has stayed clean too, the Vax I had was bagless and it got so dirty all over.

I keep hearing this, and it puzzles me. I’m on my second Dyson and I wouldn’t buy anything else. Note, the first was only replaced as I had a typical hi-fi geek ‘need upgrade’ moment when faced with a half-price DC14! ;)
We have two cats, one long haired who moults everywhere, and I have eczema - the Dyson is the only thing I’ve ever used that properly picks his fur up. In fact it has so much suction it’s actually a struggle to move it on our long pile bedroom carpet!
Never had any major problems, although I will admit the upholstery attachments can be a bit fragile - the old machine got through 3 during our ownership but the newer machine is still on its original after 5 years, so they seem to have improved the design.
I clean the filter once every few months and usually change the belt annually and it just works. They get a big thumbs-up from me.
I'm on my second Dyson in 20 years, only got rid of the first one as it sucked up a ball of string and broke. There's nowt wrong with them. Miele may be better, I don't know, never had a go on one of those.
We've had 3 Dysons .. best vacuum cleaners by far as function goes - but incredibly decrepit manufacturing quality.
The latest one is only 2 years old and already on its second roller head (warranty repairs are very good to be fair)

The same applies with my Miele - to use it on carpets, the head has to be set with the bristles retracted, the lowest speed selected and even then the air bleed control has to be open, otherwise the 'suction' is so strong you would have great difficulty in vacuuming carpets.
Another thing I like about the Miele is, for all its undoubted power and suction, it is very quiet - so quiet that you can happily listen to the hi-fi whilst vacuuming; whereas my old upright Hoovers were extremely noisy.
The Miele cost me less than £140, and it was made in Germany - I don't think you could pick up a Dyson machine for the same price, even though they are now made in China.
My missus bought a (expensive) Dyson in preference to the (cute) Henry I wanted. I find that when I target a bit of fluff the stupid thing blows it sideways out of my line of attack! Absolut nonsensical machine!
I've had one of those orange Vax hoover/washer things for years, massive suction and as a bonus if used with care is very good at drying freshly washed records. The only problem I have is due to my advancing decrepitude it is a bit of a lump to pull around. With that in mind I bought a Dyson Absolute cordless and it is brilliant, not quite the power of the Vax but enough for a good clean and very well balanced so easy to push around. It has two power settings and will go for around 25 minutes on the standard setting but will drain a fully charged battery in less than 10 if the boost setting is used. I did have a G-tech air ram but wasn't impressed and sold it on fairly quickly.

The correct terminology is suction cleaner, I was told this when I started working for Electrolux, if one called it a Hoover, that would be a mark against you!
I later went on to work for Sunbeam Rowenta, they also made suction cleaners.
The best domestic suction cleaner that I have purchased was a Philips HR6800, so good I purchased another, 25 years or so on, both are still fine. No, I never worked for Philips, but my Dad designed some of their factory in Croydon!

My mother has a G-Tech thing and if you attempt to view it as a vacuum cleaner then it fails on all counts. If you view it as a modern, battery operated version of those 1970s Bissel carpet sweepers, however, then it’s passable.

I am in a VAX period at the moment. Had 3 of their carpet washers and the first one worked well but the noise it made was absolutely deafening. Bought a quieter one that didn't pick up half the water of the previous one and leaked water when not being used. Last year I bought an "all terrain" VAX top of the range beast that cleans carpets and lino which has driven brushes and a hot air dryer built in and that really does work well, although the plastic bits are rather fragile, especially the two water tank's handles.
Had a small VAX cylinder which was like fighting with an Anaconda as the hose wanted to do it's own thing, so we bought a VAX battery powered one that picks up OK for about 5 minutes, then you spend 20 minutes or more unclogging and emptying out the tiny dust compartment plus several filters otherwise the suck reduces almost to zero. There is a rubber flap non return valve wotsit just before the dust compartment and that clogs very easily as well, so the tube blocks up solid within seconds, so as you power it off a torrent of dust and crumbs falls out onto the carpet you have just cleaned. Now have a Dyson animal model that does the job of the useless VAX battery powered contraption and even then the build quality of the Dyson is dire although it does pick up the dog hairs.
I have a Miele Cat and Dog and a Karcher workshop vac in my house in Aveyron.
I have a Vorwerk Kobold, a Dyson cylinder and a cheap Titan workshop vac in Toulouse.
The Vorwerk is awesome, but it should be for the price.
