A naff response that's for sure.

Of course I know Famous Blue raincoat (Jennifer Wearns a) is a cover of the Leonard Cohen original at least he was on the Jennifer Wearns version.

Still.....it takes all sorts.

I was talking about how your system conveys emotion with the Agency album.

As this is digital..... I thought to be the right place!

As a Vinyl nut, I thought I might portray something completely different..

Heard something that brings tears... or is it that my system is doing this for me?

Obviously, this is a cover but it tests my system to the enth degree..

This really is worth a listen... perhaps crap for some..... but open your ears.

Kit is :

Macintosh MA2275 / Mytek Brooklyn DAC / MicroRendu End Point/ Revolver Cygnus Speakers. (All via Roon).

Bollocks.... I still love the Black Stuff!!!

I think you're asking the wrong question here and I fear you will get very few positive responses. In fact I think you are conflating two issues. The first is whether one finds a particular musical performance moving. The second is whether your system is good enough to capture and project the emotion of musical performance.

I think you were always going to be on dodgy ground comparing a cover of a Leonard Cohen song to the original performance by Laughing Len himself. I did not really like the Agency performance and can think of several (IMHO) better covers. By coincidence, I heard two very different live performances of this song at the same venue in the last two years: Richard Shindell and Edwina Hayes at the Greystones in Sheffield. I like the Hayes version because of the quality of her voice, and the Shindell version because I think he is a master of the "cover" and really gets at the meaning of a song.

On the second point, I think that a good system can really help to enjoy a recording and get a sense of what the writer and performer intended, but I will confess to having been moved by performances heard on crappy systems too.

I think at the time the song was recorded he was on Jennifer Warnes quite often per se! :)

I agree there are better versions. As for a decent system... I think I got that!
It’s about what you hear at the time of listening.

My deck / System is capable of playing both crap and music to die for. After all, isn’t that what it’s all about?

I am sure your system is excellent but the point I was making is that an exceptional performance can often cut through a mediocre or even just plain rubbish system. For me, it is usually about the poignancy of the lyrics.

I am not familiar with that recording, but I do know what you mean about conveying emotion. I recently went through a long process of trying to get my system to sing. But, I know I’ve finally got it right because it can now convey emotion, and I can select many recordings that can easily draw a tear if I’m doing some serious listening. Not sad music mind you, just moving performances.

Oh yeah indeed. Mark Knopfler's album Kill to get Crimson and the track True Love Will Never Fade. The little tiny almost minute inflections he puts into just a few guitar notes make me bloody shiver. Also got it on vinyl and it is no better than the CD.

A couple of songs by Snow Patrol used to get me near tears when I first heard them, no idea why - possibly the guy's voice and phrasing.

Didn't matter whether they were played on a hifi or crappy car stereo ....

A lot of songs I hear on the radio evoke rage when I hear them - mainly because they are utter shite.

Personally, I don't dismiss nothing until I heard it.

Apart from the fact that music ( regardless of gender) got me through my cancer treatment.

Well Pete, that's you and I with the same T shirt - music got me through my chemo too, until I found it too fatiguing to listen to.
Chemo can be pretty heavy stuff to deal with - you feel fine beforehand, but the thing that cures you makes you feel shittier than you could ever imagine.

I'll listen to anything once, for at least as long as it takes me to get bored with it - could be 15 seconds, or it could be 15 years.
I really didn't like what I heard from Agency - they're on the 15 second end of the scale.
It doesn't make my lack of tolerance for what they do any kind of arbiter for taste, but I really did disconnect within 15 seconds.

I dislike what I heard of Agency as much as I dislike London Grammar, so don't take my comments personally :)

I just cannot listen to any album I have by Eva Cassidy as it makes me cry every time... a voice to die for but so sadly and tragically not with us anymore... :(

This thread title worries me, especially so because as I improve the resolution of my system, I realise just how amateurish much music is.

So I find my emotion being one of 'Christ what an unpleasant noise'.

I think I know what the OP meant though.
