Crap Weather for July!

It's overcast now, but very warm at 28C. It also feels extremely humid. I'm hoping we get some rain to clear the air, it's oppressive at the moment.

Cloudy and humid but very hot. Spent the afternoon cutting hedges and now feel like a limp lettuce. Clouds of tiny black flying beetles everywhere which got in my ears, eyes, nose and all over making it a bit of a trial.

Quite jealous of youse all getting rain. I've forgotten what it's like. Statistically it rains here one day in three and we've had none for three weeks.

All the grass is dead, mainly because the place is all post industrial wasteland that's been reclaimed so under the topsoil is just rubble and bits of old pots.

Svend, you've not been fooled by my fake grumpy exterior - I'm a real sweetheart! In fact I'm so nice I could be an honorary Canadian, if only I didn't find maple syrup a bit weird tasting. May make it over there for a visit one day, Mrs. Pony has relatives in Canada.

Usually the complaints are about the weather being too cold, or too wet, but I personally am sick of this hot sunny weather! Great for sitting by the pool with a cold drink, but after a few hours working in it I'm losing the will to live. This afternoon I fitted a four metre long set of bi-fold doors on the south face of a house and by 3pm I was just about falling over. I've done a few sneaky 'early darts' when no one's been looking. :)

Anyway the bike got a clean bill of health from the MOT station. so should be riding it this weekend. If that doesn't bring some rain, nothing will. :( And that's a moan.

Acquired taste, according to some foreigners...kind of the same as a Canadian trying their darndest to love Islay malts or warm cask ale :sofa: :D

Ah, motorbikes... I do miss mine, a lot. In the early 80's I used to have a Honda CB650 and then a CB750F. Wonderful bikes, both, esp. the 750F. I doubt I would own another bike here -- too many whackos on the roads. Have a great weekend riding. Weather looks wonderful for you, and not a cloud in the forecast. Great weather for July, eh? ;)

Australians too love yapping to anyone. In britain you see many people on trains or buses hiding behind newspapers not uttering a sound, or with trays wandering around scouring a cafe or restaurant for an empty table, but the Aussies take one look at you and they plonk themselves down at your table and within minutes your have their entire life story, seen a picture gallery of their house, garden, pets, cars, operation scars, the lot. The british are just far too insular.

I do have a bit of an aversion to warm weather - when on holiday I can't sit in the sun, preferring to sit in the shade and look out at the sun. I twist myself into all kinds of shapes to keep my body fully under the umbrella, and when walking around the missus walks in the sun while I stick to the shady side of the street. Suits her fine, she can pretend she's not with me.

Same when we've gone for more than a few hundred yards, I'll say "you carry on, I'll sit under this shade and have a cold beer, and then catch you up". Works every time - I just stay there till she returns, laden with bags of souvenir crap, so everybody wins!

Temperature here has actually averaged 26-29 here, which I know would be comfortable for you guys. You probably have temperatures in the 30's in summer and minus 20's in winter but the key perhaps is that this happens every year for you, with clearly defined seasons. We don't get any weather long enough to get used to it.

Mrs. P is a big fan of maple syrup, loves the stuff. Probably got a taste for it while visiting her uncle in Calgary a few years ago. Maybe it's a bit like the Irish with their Guinness, sell us the crap and keep the good stuff for yourselves! :)

Shame about the bikes, seems Canada has gone the same way as us - if the dickhead drivers don't get you, the fun police (aka the police) will. The only way to get full-on two wheel fun is to use your bike for track days only, and who can afford to do that?

Dominic -- well, I wouldn't describe Canadians as yappers. More apt to enjoy a brief, pleasant chat and a bit of a laugh, but certainly not in yer face. All very respectful and polite. In big cities like Toronto some folks can be quite insular -- comes with the territory, I think, with 6.5 million people around here. Still, it's easy enough to break through the shell and strike up a conversation.

Steve -- you're quite right, hot summers (regularly over 30 deg. and humid) and cold winters (-10 to -20 deg.) are the norm in this area. But Canada is so huge that you just can't generalize. It varies from area to area. We've just had a spell of 33 to 36 deg. here, humidex into the mid-40's, which was pretty damn uncomfortable. Most houses and apartments have air conditioning, so we just stay indoors in the afternoon, and do our outdoor stuff early morning and evenings.

Geoff -- hang in there! Can't last forever. And keep the fridge stocked with cold beer and iced tea :)

Then as I'm leaving the punk is glassing him again. That was it for me, made up my mind to get out of Liverpool however I did it.

This year is a little different. Most UK summers only have one or two fairly brief really hot spells, so investment in air-con for homes is probably not worthwhile. Climate change may put a different spin on that eventually though.

Its 26 degrees C in here at 2am with all the windows wide open. My fridge is really struggling as its getting old. It gives up, I keep having to reset it and Ive run out of ice cubes again.

Im off to buy a big stand mount fan tomorrow as I only have a small fan heater size on cold blow.

I dont want to complain but I am beginning to feel uncomfortable as Im not geared up for this. its very muggy tonight and Im not sleeping well. I dont have a light summer duvet so this duvet just gets thrown off. I thought I want another 1976 but we are going to be running out of water and will need some rain soon.

The advantage of living in a draughty old Edwardian house is revealed when the weather's like this; it's much cooler in the house than outside, especially with the windows and back door open. If it gets too hot even in here, I can go to the University library, which has air conditioning and is open all hours.

We've stopped bothering with bedclothes now as we only kick them off during the night.

Yes, I remember the hot weather riding. City traffic was the worst, heat coming up off the engine and all that. But out on the open road it was wonderful. Ahhh....I miss those days... I'd better quit writing about bikes in this thread lest I get a compulsive and irresistible urge and end up with one in our driveway tomorrow. :eek: Wife would have me sleeping in the garage for a month, maybe two.

I'm all for Sun and warm but this is relentlessly too hot and with not a drop of rain for two months. If only we could have the occasional rainstorm, it would be great. As it is, the garden is parched and dying. It's close to 30c in the garden right now and too hot to work in.

I can cool down indoors, fan on at night and go out in the car with the climate control but I would prefer it being not quite so hot and have some rain to keep the garden going.

Got a bit of rain today (thankfully, both in terms of the garden and freshening the air), and it's much cooler. Currently at 18°C, which I'm far more comfortable with than when it's 10 degrees higher, as has been the case recently.

It still allows me to wear shorts and a t-shirt, but not walk about the place dripping in sweat! Still uncomfortably warm though at night.

Cut the grass two weeks ago, and in the growing season it really needs cutting once a week to keep it acceptable-looking, but this time it has hardly grown at all (apart from a few weeds) - however parts of it are looking distinctly sad and 'yellow'. :(

But with a temperature here of around 31 deg C and threatening to reach 33 deg C tomorrow, I won't be doing anything to ameliorate the 'lawn situation'.

I used to live in Haywards Heath in West Sussex and there are some very affluent parts where it costs a fortune to live. I saw loads of rats running around there late at night. The little air cooler is doing a great job, I think if you were hoping for lcy blasts from it you'd be disappointed but there is a nice stream of cool air that takes the edge off the heat, currently 34 degrees. Ah, well that it explains it, as I've noticed hee-haw difference in the mileage I get to the gallon, with the air-con on or off. Folk say it causes a loss in engine power, too. Never noticed that either:)

Same applies with auto transmission. Smaller engined cars pay a noticeable penalty, whereas larger cars mostly shrug this off.

Really powerful cars and actually be faster accelerating with auto boxes than manual, simply because the shifts are quicker, overriding power losses.

Next time tell her to stand at the end of the carriage where the window s open. I do that all the time as you get a lovely breeze

Actually, although the break-even point depends on the car, I understand it’s better for fuel economy to open the windows and not use the aircon at lower speeds but, at higher speeds, the reduction in aerodynamics caused by having windows open uses more fuel than using the aircon.

Personally speaking, though, I wouldn’t be without aircon by choice ever again. And the only thing worse than having a car without it, is having one with it that doesn’t work!

As to rats, our neighbours have had problems with them. We haven’t though. Something to do with having two cats; one of which that kills anything that moves, I’m guessing!

Yes, but within reason. My main bugbear isn't the exceptionally hot weather, per se, but rather the fact our houses simply aren't geared up for such heatwaves! If there was a nice cool retreat available, particularly to retire to at night for sleeping, it'd be a different ball game.

Plus, I've spent all of my life living in the UK, so have become acclimatised to cooler weather. An Italian who's spent all of their life living in Italy, might feel differently.

The other thing is my family are from a small mountain village in Tuscany, where it rains often and can also get rather cold, out with of the summer months. We're not from Sicily or such like:)

He is very smart, even by cat standards. I've tried to tell her this but she just thinks he is 'naughty'. He's also been slaughtering the local wildlife at an alarming rate and depositing the remains behind the couch in the living room. He leaves whats left of his purloined food pouches behind there too.

I agree, there's no such thing as a 'naughty' cat. All cats will do what they can to get what they want. Gives the impression that some cats are better behaved, when really they're just more stupid.

If your friend were to change the pantry lock for a combination type, that would end the thieving - everyone knows cats struggle with counting. Then if she just leaves out a couple of pouches per day, the cat would be pretty much maintenance-free. Then it just needs to learn to put its empty pouches and kills in the bin and it would be a sight smarter than most kids, who these days don't set the bar very high.

You can't get them to clean up after themselves. I've tried. Showed mine how to close the door behind him when he came in. Not interested. Although after he was sick on the living room carpet I did tell him to be sick in the kitchen in future so it was at least easier to clean up and he did comply with that request. It's not what you think is reasonable it's what the cat thinks is reasonable that matters.

I like the heat, but when the weather is like that the air quality round here is appalling. Much better now with a bit of wind and rain.

Ditto. I got the best sleep last night I've had in months! Call me fussy, but I dislike living inside an oven.

Pishing down today, and lovely and cool, but will enjoy it while it lasts, as next week, particularly the tail end, it's forecast for more stifling heat!:doh:

I'll be interested to see how long my house holds the heat it has built up. There is still about 10 degrees difference between outside and in. My guess is it won't hold it for long.

I was thinking the same. I've just been out to the shops and when I walked back indoors, I was struck by the warmth.

Yes, but we were sleeping with the bedroom window wide open, and a cool breeze blowing in. It was so nice remembering what 'cool' feels like, breathing in fresh, not stuffy air, and waking up in the morning with your pillows not soaking in sweat! :rolleyes:

That's the BIG problem here.

Because our solid sandstone walls are so thick, they retain the heat for days, especially with our house being south-facing, and so it bakes in the sun all through the day. On one of the hottest days here recently, I noted a difference of 16 degrees at night, between the temperature outside of the house and in - and so I was nearly sleeping outside on the grass!!

Great in the winter, as we almost never need to use central heating, as the wood burner in the lounge heats the whole house up, but shit in the type of weather we've had recently.

Now you know why I find it so uncomfortable, especially as like you, I hate a warm bedroom!
