I have recently moved in to Chorley and my new house has a basement:eyebrows: it's been tanked, decorated and all spiders and other undesirables shown the door, it would be rude not to use this space as my new hifi room wouldn't it?

What does "tanked" mean in this context?

Basically it's been lined to stop it being damp, apparently this needs to be done to basements if you want to use them as living space
Ah - I did wonder if that was what was meant.
Your new hifi room is essentially a brick or concrete 'box', so you will have to think about the acoustics carefully. What are the dimensions?

It's a lining of impermeable material. It used to be done with bitumen, but polymers are generally employed now. It can be quite expensive!

it's 12 foot square and it's been insulated with polystyrene before being plaster boarded, the ceiling is low and acoustically it's dead, i don't know if that's because of the polystyrene insulation

Could be. What is the height and what are your speakers?
It's always best when the three dimensions are dissimilar. In your case two are identical (12'), so you will need to do something to make the left/right (from the listener's point of view) acoustic different from the fore/aft acoustic. Ideally, if given the choice, speakers should occupy the 'live' end of the room, with the listener (sat on his nice comfy sofa), at the 'dead' (or deader) end of the room. Put your record storage racks at the listening end, or hang up some heavy curtains there.

it's a basement so there are no windows and unfortunately i cant get a sofa in there due to the access, i've had to go for a Ikea poang chair which is comfortable but wont do much to soak up any reflected sound
What speakers are you planning to use in there?

Plenty of "flat pack" sofas available!

Fine, but I have had those and they won't help much with room acoustics. Some bookcases and plenty of books might help though.

Defo not showing for me, and I've tried three different browsers now: Firefox, Chrome and Safari. With the first two, I get nothing. With Safari, I get a small blue box with a question mark in it. Do you have to be signed into Dropbox, or something, to view the pic?
Seems strange, as I've never had problems seeing anyone else's pics...

Lol - glad to see it's not just me, then! Mike, could you use another pic hosting site and repost the image with that?:)
Otherwise, some of us will just have to 'imagine' what your room looks like;)

I see it now. I was imagining the basement from the original Amityville Horror film but that looks really cool and cosy.
One question: Why have you got the speakers so close into the corners? I'm guessing you tried having them out a bit and a bit closer together? I would have thought that would have worked better.
Looks good though. You've got the advantage of being able to start with a blank canvass there. You can introduce room treatments bit by bit and gauge the effect. If it turns out you need any.

i've not hooked the system up yet, i'm waiting to re-cap the amp and get some longer speaker cable. That pic was taken just after i moved in, so nothing is in it's final position just yet

You could be quite cute and get some deep canvas pics and stuff the back with some sound absorbent material. Decorative acoustic pics.

I think it looks great. And the only way sound can annoy others I would imagine is through the ceiling. If whoever is up there doesn't mind you should be able to crank it. So many don't really have that privilege. And it is an important one for me.
So are you lucky in that respect? Or don't you care or listen that loud?

My rule of thumb is if i can't actually feel the bass it's not loud enough :eyebrows::eyebrows: i'm actually quite surprised at how good it sounds down there, i was going to get some new speakers, as although i've always had a soft spot the the Mordaunt Short MS45Ti i think they are a lot better than they are given credit for, i was looking at a set of Rega RS5 as in the old room bass didn't quite have the gusto that i liked however in the new room it's there, it's controlled and when the volume is way past sensible listening levels it doesn't go all to pot, like most people here i don't expect night and day differences but this new room has done that, it might have something to do with the new amp of course, but as it's sitting right now i'm concentrating on my TT as i fancy a new arm with better wiring.
