Hi,

Have had a Musical fidelity A1 in a second system together with BC1, best simple combo I've had in my workshop in years, it sings beautifully … until it doesn't, recently the amp has been developing distorted sound randomly that I can only fix by futzing with the source selector. It's been getting worse to the point I've stopped using it. Competent repairers in Hi-fi are hard to find here in Belgium it seems they are either washing machine specialists or self-proclaimed hifi vintage experts waiting to rip me off a fortune for just a pot and a contact cleaner shower.
So as I can't think of a replacement amp that would be such a good match with the BC1, I'm now seriously considering sending to England for a serious revision.

So my questions to you would be : is it worth considering an overhaul of the A1 after all these years? and as google comes with quite a few "specialists" in the UK can anyone recommend the man I need?

tia

A1 with BC1's? Not something I'd have thought of in all honesty. Good luck with the service...

Hi Mickael,

JS Audio repairs is your best bet, the owner John Sampson is a former Musical Fidelity engineer. Check his website out for the testimonials: https://jsaudiorepairs.co.uk/

I think MF themselves may eventually have seen the light (or £ signs) and finally started offering a service/upgrade on these. It was listed on their website a few years ago when I checked.

+1 - John is the genuine article. Only caveat is that his services are in great demand and the turn-around may be longer than you had hoped for/anticipated. Best give him a call to discuss your options, including whether or not a repair is likely to be cost-effective.

Possibly SW1X. They are listed in the trade section and have a presence on ebay for repairs and upgrades. I assume they are not MF experts though.

I'm pretty sure that Jez Arkless was an MF engineer too.

Thanks everyone, contacted John Sampson. I'll report back if repair happens.

@DSJR was not expecting much from that combo until I first heard it and found myself just sitting there all day listening to the music and getting nothing else done. And the A1 was up against an Onix, a NVA and a quad 606 that day …

A1 with BC1's? Not something I'd have thought of in all honesty. Good luck with the service...I think it would be rather nice, Near class A into BC1s. An A100 would sound even nicer with the extra power mind you :)
