I moved from rolling baccy to vaping 5 months ago - this is the longest I have managed without the demon tobacco in 55 years of passionate smoking and I'm more than happy to continue.

I have saved just over £100 a month (which I've been spending on hifi goodies ;) ) but obviously the main benefit has been a huge improvement in my ability to breath without wheezing, taste food and smell things properly (not always a boon ...)

I'm hoping to also phase out the vaping at some point but don't feel any rush to do so given that I haven't experienced any nasties coming from the use.
My question really is whether anyone here who went down this route has also managed to quit the vape as well?

My sister in law went from 40 a day, to vaping and has now stopped completely.
I had a helping hand in this. I bought her a decent e-cig etc.

Well done Mike. I did exactly the same on the 4th March and my experience has been the same.

I actually tested my lack of need for cigarettes by buying one pack a month ago and smoking them, then using the vape again. I felt no pangs (as I expected), so the vaping continues. I actually forget to use it now and then. Guess I'll taper down the liquid strength and usage eventually. One small bottle of vape liquid can last me nearly a week if I go easy and at 99 pence is hardly going to break the bank. Compared to seven and a half quid for a pack of fags that last me a day and a half!

i went cold turkey from 60 a day rollups. wasnt too bad actually but there were moments. after 6 vweeks i tried one and flung it away, saying how did i ever stomach those.
i now do vape occasionally. use the cigarette type as they are weaker by far. ive 2 top class vape mods in house;one never opened(both cool fire 4 plus with the big tanks), and wont use them, as they are imv not as enjoyable as the cig type.

anyway, well done that man; keep it up

By the way. For anybody thinking of trying an alternative to cigarettes, I found the various Nicorettes products completely useless. It was only once I tried a proper vape pen with 18mg/ml liquid that I managed to pack fags up!

After a three week stay in hospital back in 2008 I gave up a thirty a day habit but due mainly to boredom I started again a couple of years ago. My landlady made me try a vape under threat of eviction and at first it was ok but I drifted onto cigars, Clare slapped my legs again so I went back to the vape and this time it is great, no cravings at all although I do still ponce one or two rollies from visitors if they smoke lol. You really do notice how much better things taste and smell and I also find sleeping easier with no wheezing, coughing and spluttering. The money saved is quite substantial too. I rarely drink alcohol so I justify my hifi spending as I have to have some pleasure.
One other thing is that many animal charities won't rehome to smokers any more, if you tell them of course.

You'll be bombarded with recommendations now! :D

I have an '88vape' and two 'ecig' pens. Only cheap, but I find the 'ecig' better than the '88vape'. They are £4.99 at Homebargains.

I did stop for about 3 months, then back on the cigs. Must try harder...

I really like MTL style, I went through a phase of building my own coils, dripping etc., but my fave is the Nautilus Mini tank.

I've been thinking about vape , which one would be best ?There is a plethora of choice out there but I would recommend getting one with variable wattage as this allows you to tailor the strength and flavour of the vapour. I bought an Eleaf kit and it cost about £45 which you recoup very quickly. Best bet is to go to a vape store, they're usually helpful. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180626/ed9426b476c241af8ff84353ace3f55d.jpg

'ecig' £3.95 on ebay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/eGo-1100mah-Shisha-Vape-Pen-Starter-Kit-Battery-Charger-eCIG-510-CE4-EVOD-SMOK/202350132449?hash=item2f1d01fce1:m:mZok5Y3-WGNC3G5fAmlurYg You might want to get two. One to be on charge while the other is in use. That's what I do. You can buy spare batteries, but at that price, it makes sense to just buy two vapes.

It's cheap, but works just fine. You can get the liquid on ebay too or at any tobacconist.

walpurgis
26-06-2018, 16:49
I'll give it a go , thanks.
Which liquid/cartridge fits this one?

I currently use the 18mg/ml liquid. Your tobacconist should sell it, you just unscrew the mouthpiece to top-up. Some of the flavours are revolting though. I stick with the tobacco or menthol flavours. Tried cherry a few weeks ago, it was ghastly!

Vaping is as bad as Hi-Fi. No end of posh gear about at fancy prices, but a cheapie will get you going and you can revise your wants later if need be.

Dug my one out. All cleaned and unlikely to use again. It's adjustable but I found it too powerful for me these days great tanks

16 will be plenty to start with then you can alter if its not right. i use menthol 20mg at moment but often just use the 16mg

Yomanze
26-06-2018, 17:50
What's strength should I go for , I smoke something between 10-15 a day,
which brand of liquid would you advice

It is entirely dependent on the vape unit. For example, 18mg will be fine on a ‘clearomiser’ pen vape like Geoff shared, but will be very very harsh with the bigger tanks, where 6mg or even 3mg is more appropriate.

Also with a pen vape you do not want a high VG juice as it is too thick, at a minimum 60/40 PG/VG ratio. [emoji4]

26-06-2018, 17:53
Any particular brands , I'd like to start with tobacco taste ?
I missed second line of your reply , thanks

Brands are much of a muchness, I do like the ‘RY4’ flavours, like a nutty rich toffee / tobacco taste, one for smoking fans I think.

I'm using 3mg with an Eleaf MTL tank and an Aspire Archon mod. Honestly I can't get even the vaguest hit, and I used to smoke marlboro lights. I think a change to a decent DTL tank and stronger liquid is on the cards. 2nd week vaper, 25 year smoker, though only a couple a day.

Mac72, the tobacco taste stuff doesn't. it tastes like stale dumps scrounged from the ashtray.

Too weak for that tank, up it to 6mg, or even 9mg. Also I prefer MTL, feels more like smoking. [emoji4]

Definitely do it - if you can find your hit then the benefits are huge :goodluck:

I went for a cheap option - an iClear 16 starter kit.
I figured if I didn't make too much of a ritual of it with fancy (and expensive) tanks and such it would be easier to give up.

Yes the vaping , I’ve now been referred to a specialist!
I think I was in denial and blaming everything but the vape but now I think about it the problems started when I went from the pen type to the current beast .
Stupidly I’ve started smoking again today but my breathlessness has already decreased.
I love hiking and I’m lucky to have a sister who lives in the French alps where I regularly go hiking but now I struggle to walk from the front door to the drive .

The gamuccI cigarette type are very good. I refill them and they last for ages The menthol is the cleanest imo. I get a hit but no chest issues etc. Trouble is the company has stopped I think. Hoping they restart as they are best by margin. Ive got a big stock and can source batteries that fit

:exactly: Agree with all the above - tried a few flavours but found most of them vile.
I was lucky to find a relatively mild flavour off the bat and have stuck with it = Hangsen Tobacco 12mg/ml. Not too strong either so should be easier to step back to 6mg/ml .... and then nowt.

Also doing my best to avoid getting caught up in the fancy tanks and souped up battery packs and malarky ... like HiFi - keep it simple

The vape flavour is not a really crucial thing as long as it's not revolting. I get on OK with the tobacco one, but use menthol mostly. It's the effect that counts. I find there's not a substantial 'hit' like you get from the first fag of the day, but the noticeable thing for me is not feeling the need to light up a cigarette. After a couple of days, you settle into using the vape.

Reminds me of a guy I worked with years ago - he gave up smoking and suffered all kinds of health problems. His doctor told him to start smoking again, the stress of withdrawal was apparently too much for his body to cope with

I will at some point be forced to give up, and it will be for financial reasons (I hope). For the last 3 years we've gone to Bulgaria for our holidays, and over there Marlboro Gold is about £2.50 a pack, making 100 packs £250. With them costing 11 quid a pack over here, that's a saving of £850. Our 'all inclusive' holiday costs around 7-800 pounds, meaning holiday + fags is cheaper than stay at home + fags!

Anyway, I'm sure there will be cost increases in the near future due to you-know-what, and when that happens I'll be forced to take the vape route. I have tried it before, and found it boring. Apart from the addiction, problem is I actually LIKE smoking! I never smoke indoors, not even at home, so it's just me that's getting stinked up with the smoke.

... when that happens I'll be forced to take the vape route. I have tried it before, and found it boring. Apart from the addiction, problem is I actually LIKE smoking!

Believe me - I absolutely LOVE smoking. For me it wasn't simply a pastime or a nuisance addiction I was stuck with, it was part of my life and had an almost religious meaning. Smoking was way cooler than anything other than sex. I always thought I would sooner give up the booze than cigs (and I love drinking too....) I had a special tin for my tobacco and another to keep my filters and papers ... I even had a seperate set for going on holiday with. My favourite brand was Samson and I was absolutely gutted when they brought in plain packaging - even more annoyed than all the Brexit crap.

Yes - vaping is boring, and the first time I tried it I just couldn't be bothered ... the yawn factor was immense. Problem is that I'm not getting any younger and the effects of almost 60 years of that shit are really hitting home. Poor circulation, problems with breathing, easily fatigued and most definitely hearing impairment due to the accumulation of phlegm in various cavities in my bonce.

Time came when I had to admit to myself that whatever pleasure I was getting from the stuff and however much I convinced myself that I was some kind of f**king hero for not caving into the anti-smoking heretics, the only person who was really being a complete and utter wanker was me.

I wish there was a button inside my head to press so I can give up smoking.

I have tried the patches, gum, sprays, hypnotherapy, the wonder tablets the doctors prescribe, even vaping, which tasted foul and made me wheeze and cough like an old donkey.

What pisses me off intensely is when people say it is a "filthy habit" and gets my goat even more when the medical trade label is as such, when they know full well it is a bona fide clinical addiction, equally as severe as heroin.

struth
27-06-2018, 09:31
i gave up because i was starting to feel the effects, plus it was both becoming expensive and difficult to do anywhere bar home. plus my daughter wanted me and wife to stop. i thought i would do it and show wife it could be done. she only followed several years later and too late for her.
all it takes is willpower, although many dont have enough and need help. my son used patches successfully. i used willpower only. wife eventually used electronic cigarettes.
hell i gave up alcohol too. never thought i could do it but it was easier than i thought. im still alive so it must have helped..lol:eek:

I gave up when my first baby was born, decided I couldn't hold a cigarette and a baby, that was 38 years ago.

Can't believe how people can now afford to smoke, it seems really expensive!

When my brother became a born-again non smoker, he constantly went on at me about smoking and my lack of willpower.

One day he started on at me about being a drain on NHS resources. My defence was that we are all going to die of something and whatever that is will be a 'drain' on the NHS. If he lived for example ten years longer than me, he will have also have ten more years of drawing a state pension, and when he sees out his days in a care home, telling his son Harry that his son Harry never visits, I won't care because I'll be dead.

It seems that until medicine can get a handle on this, the longer the body keeps going the greater the chance that the head will clock off first.

I do smoke a lot less when he's around, as it's not worth the nagging.

By mistake, I bought three 10ml bottles of mixed berry flavour vape liquid. It was in packs the same colour as the usual tobacco items.

Having tried cherry flavour once and found it disgusting, I expected the mixed berry to be equally revolting, but I was pleasantly surprised, it's actually quite nice! :)

My usual is normally menthol, as that is fairly innocuous, although I use the tobacco flavour too.

I've now been off the fags since March.

I was a moderate smoker (deliberately) and going without a smoke for a day felt a bit strange but nothing I couldn't cope with. Even a couple of days was manageable, but when I was trying to pack up, the need started biting on the third day . The withdrawal symptoms arriving with a vengance. Blurred vision, inability to think straight or concentrate on anything and of course the foul mood! And this just went on and on, week after week. I never did stay off ciggies long enough to 'get clean'.

Vaping makes all the 'nasties' go away. Well, for me at least.

+1. If it was just addiction, I would be able to vape. That would make more sense from a health and financial point of view, but I just can't be doing with them. Having said that, although I'm not a heavy smoker, If like Macca I accidentally left my cigs at home I'd have to go to the shop. So there is some addiction to it.

Andy, you're probably susceptible to wetlung if you've had pneumonia and pleurisy. A high nicotine content and a MTL would have been best for you. But not as good as not bothering at all.

I'm on my umpteenth week now, had a few rollys in the pub, but that'll always be the case.

I moved to a bigger tank, an Innokin Zenith, with the low ohm coil and the airway right open you can use it as a DTL and that's where I seem happy with 6mg sauce.

I'm all over the place on flavours, swapping every new bottle and invariably mixing and matching on every fill.

But it's here to stay. I'm currently saving £30 a week, as I only get through 1 £5 10ml bottle a week.

Hmm. Out of curiosity, I bought 'chocolate' vape liquid. The flavour is odd to say the least, there's a vague chocolatey thing going on, but with more than a suggestion of rabbit hutch sweepings and sweaty socks............Not sure we'll be bothering with this one again! :D

Nicotine isn't addictive.

It is everyone's blood stream since it is in food.

What is addictive is burning nicotine with the alkaloids in tobacco.

Vape liquids for the most part do not contain the alkaloids.

This is why you cannot stop vaping when you first start. It's like it's never ending and you cannot put it down.

Some US liquids do contain the alkaloids e.g. Umbavape and Aroma WTAs. Still not the same as burning as you are only heating the nicotine and alkaloids. However, these liquids are far more effective at stopping you vaping forever. A few hits and you want to put the vape machine down.

I unfortunately do not get on with either. Tried many times, but WTA is easily the most effective at stopping you smoking.

There are some interesting vape flavours out there. I've been experimenting.

I quite like the Gooding, RY6 and Heisenberg flavours, they are unusual. At first, they come across as not necessarily pleasant, but after little a while, they become enjoyable.

They are available on ebay for a quid or two, so won't break the bank.

What pisses me off the most is when I get told it's a "nasty habit", which it isn't. It is a clinical addiction, every bit as much as heroin and just as hard to give up.

I have had hynotherapy, the patches, chewing gum, sprays, the NHS wonder tablets and even tried vaping which made me wheeze like an old donkey.

If only there was a switch inside my head that says "stop smoking" I would happily press the bastard and easily quit without the pangs.

Try the book called “ stop smoking “ by Allen Carr , others may laugh but it worked for me and other smokers I knew .
Throughout the book it does explain how 1 fag leads to another ( true ) so once you quit DON’T have that one fag !! 3 years of not smoking then I had that one fag [emoji20] ( well more than a fag really [emoji6][emoji6]) .

See my earlier post. The Wikipedia entry that supported what I stated about it not being addictive by itself has been COMPLETELY re-written.

It most definitely is in everyone's blood stream. Tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines etc all contain it.

Everyone tests positive for it.

Curious about that Wiki entry changing so radically.

You will only stop if YOU want to stop, cutting down etc is a reason to continue

Make your mind up and STOP its willpower thats needed , I did it 34 years ago and have not had one since

Its a habit , change your routine , When you want a smoke , do the wasing up , do the dusting , take the dog for a walk , get the vacuum out , paint the celing anything to take your mind off it , Once the habit is broken and you dont want a fag after your dinner , a pint , a snack , then its easy :D

All the crap that they sell you to help stop smoking is good for the industry , they make billions out of you and they hope you dont stop so you can keep buying the crap they sell you , Win Win for the big companys

YOU need to decide " Thats it I HAVE stopped smoking " then you WIN WIN , no more paying for fags , NO more paying for wonder cures , And your lungs have a chance to recover :)

Who knows, maybe they will. And I won't mind, as long as they can refund all the cig tax they've taken from me over the last 40 years. That should buy me a bit of healthcare. Or maybe I'd just buy some new speakers instead and die sooner.

And what about the people who won't stop eating crap and end up with heart disease, diabetes etc? And not forgetting all the sports injuries - they really didn't need to snowboard down that hill, they could've come back down on the ski lift.

That's the thing for me with smoking. Did it taste anything other than vile the very FIRST time you tried it? Think about it... Back then, your taste buds were as unaccustomed (probably more so) to the taste of cigarettes, as they were at the point where you've just stated it tasted vile, after having given it up for so long.

I don't know anyone, when they took their first draw of a cigarette, behind the bike sheds at school, at a party, or wherever it was, who said: 'Oh my, that tastes gorgeous!':D

I certainly didn't - it tasted VILE, which is why I stopped there and then, and didn't develop it into a habit. And I was never one for succumbing to peer pressure. The fact is, it ONLY tastes good once you've become accustomed to the taste, and then hooked on the drug.

The trick, therefore, is to stop at the first stage of it tasting vile, just like you would with anything else you hated the taste of!:eyebrows:;)

I gave up 7 or 8 years ago using the Allen Carr Easy Method (not the comedian Alan Carr). It is a mix of CBT and NLP. I never touched a fag again and was up to 40 a day.

Absolutely didn't taste good at first, but we'd stick at it because we wanted to look "grown up". Same could be said of alcohol - I doubt many kids having their first beer would be thinking, "Ooh, that's delicious!", but we stuck with it because we wanted to be "grown up".

Young smokers don't "grow up" to be wife beaters, don't kill people with their driving, and you'll never hear any kids saying "my dad's excessive smoking ruined our lives". Not unless they liked a few pints with their fags.

Sorry, not havin' that. The implication there is that the reason why kids wouldn't like the taste of wine is because the poor buggers were given the crap stuff. Wine comes under the category "acquired taste" and I don't believe any child would walk past a bottle of Tizer to get at the vino unless it was to do as the grown ups do.
Like dressing up in mummy's frock and shoes.

Is it not possible that the passage of time has given you rose-tinted specs, and you remember the wine tasting soo good, (and the summers were sunnier and the winters snowier) or maybe your memory is slightly addled by 51 years of plonk?

I've just read this through and it looks a tad confrontational. That's not my intention, It's just banter, so no need to club me with one of your (many) empty bottles. :D

I hold living in France responsible for my father becoming a raving alcoholic. He was a Routier ( lorry driver) , I’d often go off with him and lunchtimes were a huge affair in the truck stops , you’d have tables of about 20 truckers sat together all eating from a fixed menu accompanied by jugs and jugs of red table wine , thought nothing of it back then but can you imagine nowadays.

Ha - the point is that when I was growing up and first tasted wine, when I was 5 (during the 70s), the stuff that the general public had access to *was* piss! Blue Nun, anyone?;)

However, as a result of my Italian heritage, and the fact that we had our own (small) vineyard in Italy, within the family home, I was always used to drinking good (genuine) wine, and not plonk.

*Plus*, very crucially, we (Italians) very rarely drink wine without food. It's enjoyed as an accompaniment to a meal. And red wine especially with food, tastes VERY different than when drunk on its own, where it can taste like piss (rather vinegary), especially if it *is* piss!:eyebrows:

Therefore, when I first tasted wine, as a kid, all those factors would've come into play (plus it was mixed with a little water, and so diluted), not least of which the fact that it would've likely gone very well with some gorgeous homemade pasta..... As ever, context is everything!

Sure, it's not a prerequisite of growing up in France that you've got to love wine, just as it isn't with whisky, in Scotland. You like what you like. But whatever it is, it's a good idea not to become addicted to it.

Those places still exist and are alive and well. The 'Les Routiers' truck stops, when done well, have always been legendary and epitomise what's great about French food and wine, stripped of all the pretension and snobbery.

As such, whenever we're in France, those are the first places we head to for lunch. Last time I was in one, you could get a fabulous 3 (sometimes 4) course meal, with at least one bottle of wine, and coffee included, for less than 13€ a head!

You can easily pay more than that here for a plastic McDonalds.....

The funny thing Andy, is that *proper* Asti Spumate (if you like a sparkling sweet wine) is lovely, as indeed is proper Lambrusco, if you taste the stuff that they drink in Italy! Trouble is, the cheap cack they export to the UK [to fuel drunken 'hen nights' and such like], posing as such, gives both a bad name.

Wish I'd known about "Les Routiers" on my last drive around France. I remember after driving for hours, and all the restaurants having a sign on the door saying "ferme", and motorway services prices taking the piss, we ended up using McDonalds a couple of times. :( Well, we'll know better next time.

Plenty of quality wines available these days for not much money, and I'm still not convinced about this "kids and wine" thing yet, so may I suggest that anyone out there with young children who haven't tried wine yet give them a small amount to try, and describe the reaction on their little faces.

I remember after driving for hours, and all the restaurants having a sign on the door saying "ferme", and motorway services prices taking the piss, we ended up using McDonalds a couple of times. :( Well, we'll know better next time.

This is what you need, mate: http://www.relais-routiers.com/

Then simply plan in advance where to go. When Del and I are driving to France on holiday, I'll plot a route to our destination deliberately passing through the best ones to eat! Some of them even do cheap, but more than adequate overnight accommodation. Do bear in mind however, that as with anything else, there are good and bad places.

But for good value hotels, we generally use Logis: https://www.logishotels.com/en/

Plenty of quality wines available these days for not much money, and I'm still not convinced about this "kids and wine" thing yet, so may I suggest that anyone out there with young children who haven't tried wine yet give them a small amount to try, and describe the reaction on their little faces.

In terms of the former, yes more than ever, although there's still some shocking stuff sold in supermarkets for around a fiver (and less), which simply doesn't compare with wines available from specialist retailers, for only a few pounds more.

Honestly, there can be a MASSIVE difference in quality between wines costing a fiver, or 7 or 8 quid. That £2-3 extra is often the difference between drinking something no more than mediocre (or worse), and something truly great!

As for young children drinking wine, as I said, it's context and what you're used to that's important. In that respect, I'd only give them a small amount of red wine, diluted with water, which ameliorates the acidity and makes it more palatable for them, as long as it's taken with food.

It's coincidentally, however, that acidity which makes it compliment certain foods - and which is why if you want to taste wine properly, that's how to drink it.

A lot of kids these days hate vegetables, but that's only because their parents haven't introduced them to the flavour properly (or perhaps don't know how to cook them right in the first place), and it's the same with wine. That's why I didn't spit it out when my mum first gave me some, all those years ago!:)

I'm also a great believer in that if you introduce kids at an early age to a small amount of alcohol, rather than treat is as taboo until they're 18, they're less likely to abuse it later as adults. For that reason, unlike most British kids, alcohol was never a big deal for me (as it was never forbidden), which is why I didn't go running to the first pub to get pissed, once I was legally old enough to drink!

And it's probably why I've grown up to enjoy alcohol in moderation, and not become addicted to it (or indeed anything else for that matter).

Well, I love cabbage! Perhaps you're not cooking it right, and boiling it to buggery (which makes it produce that foul 'farty' smell and taste), instead of steaming it, then stirring it in some butter, along with adding a pinch of nutmeg and plenty of ground black [or even white] pepper, before serving it?

Clue: once cooked it should have some bite and texture, and not simply be a pile of sloppy mush;)

Sure, it's not a prerequisite of growing up in France that you're going to love wine, just as it isn't with whisky, growing up in Scotland. You like what you like. But whatever it is, it's a good idea not to become addicted to it.

Marco.

Addictions are interesting things. I'm firmly in the camp that some folk are easily addicted and others not so but of course anyone can be.
My son is very easily addicted to pretty much anything he likes or gets benefit from. And is an extreme case I grant you.

Then you get another semi addiction and that's the false idea that you need to take something to excess to get some benefit where you actually don't. In fact it may make it worse. That's probably more common

How do you cook it, mate?

It needs gently steamed (or sautéed), not boiled. Plus it must be fresh, not frozen. If you're someone who's only ever had boiled or frozen cabbage, then you've not really tasted cabbage - simples:)

You lose half of the flavour, colour (and nutrients) in the water, which gets poured down the sink!

For cabbage haters, or those who can't master the steaming process, here's a nice way to cook it, and which may change your mind towards eating it: https://www.foxandbriar.com/easy-sauteed-cabbage-recipe/

Note the author's previous feelings towards boiled cabbage!;)

Plus, what can also transform cabbage, and give it a different flavour entirely (and texture), is pan-frying some lardons and stirring them in at the end, especially when sautéed, then drizzling a little of the hot bacon fat over the cabbage, before serving. Cabbage and bacon, quite simply, is a marriage made in heaven. Gorgeous!:)

Ive just bought a pack of Benson Gold and I will tell you why.

Ive never really got addicted to them and can be a social smoker with very long breaks inbetween times. I havent even touched this pack yet and Ive had it for nearly a week.

when the other staff are winding down and partying Im usually sober as a judge (on duty) which is a real bummer I can assure you. I am allowed one beer on a busy night and I will try and enjoy a cigarette. Im gonna have a ciggy.

Theres nothing worse than sitting down with a bunch of merrily drunk and drugged up colleagues when sober as a judge....nothing worse in a social situation :(

Its a way of joining in and its also a hit when work is stressful. I dont want to smoke and do have periods when I just dont enjoy them and give them all away. Its a very social thing with me and usually accompanies alcohol

So I know they are dangerous to health but I fancied a young lady there and she smokes so I thought F it Im joining in :)

I still believe its 90% peer pressure, trying to be cool and then the addiction takes hold in many people....it is a filthy habit and theres no denying that :)

Martin, I sympathise with you, I too can't stand to be around pissed people - even if they're 'happy drunks' they just get on my nerves. The answer would seem to be to get drunk too, but I don't do well with alcohol, I don't enjoy it much and hate the after effects. To help me cope in these social situations my booze substitute used to be pill-shaped and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. It was an alternative which became very popular, probably still is, but I'm too old now for all that nonsense. So these days I'm just a boring old fart and stay away.

If having a cig helps you cope, that's great, you just have to be mindful of the insidious nature of nicotine addiction - nobody thinks they're addicted until they are, and even then they will deny it - much like alcohol. Personally I enjoy smoking and I'm not a 'heavy smoker' by any means, but I'm under no illusion - I am addicted to it.

Yup, and therein lays the key! *You* are in control of it, rather than *IT* being in control of you. It's exactly the same with alcohol. Enjoy both responsibly, and you'll be fine. However, one of the most important things in life is to feel happy and contented, as it's good for the soul, so you need to be able to know HOW to enjoy yourself, too!

At the end of the day, we all have our vices:)

I still believe its 90% peer pressure, trying to be cool and then the addiction takes hold in many people....it is a filthy habit and theres no denying that...

That's the indisputable truth! Luckily, even as a teenager, I never felt a need to 'follow the herd' or be part of 'the gang', in order to feel accepted, and instead was happy to do my own thing, and be accepted for it or not.

Having the desire to be independent instilled in you [being an individual, not simply a 'number'], at an early age, is actually very important for later in life, in terms of not being easily manipulated or controlled by 'the system'.

That's something more parents today should consider instilling in their children, if they want them to grow up with minds of their own. It's one of the reasons why I'm unwilling to entertain the subliminal mind-control/brainwashing, continually being drip-fed to us today by 'the system', others are seemingly only happy to accept.

Or perhaps they don't even realise that's what is happening....?;)

Yes, have done, and at the airport too. If they seriously think I'm going to walk half a mile to have a ciggy they are out of their tiny minds. If you're outside them it is going to have zero chance of affecting anyone's health but your own so there is no justification for it beyond persecuting smokers 'for their own good.' And that sort of attitude makes me want to start punching people. I know that's wrong but it's the first place I go.

It works exactly like a smoke machine they use at light shows. So there is plenty of evidence that it’s not harmful. And, no butts on the ground.

But here in the US many states are passing laws against vaping! More of that, “For your own good”, bullcrap. “It has nicotine and that’s a drug, blah blah”, As long as cigs are for sale over the counter, who cares? They are probably just wanting to tax it, to make up for all the taxes they loose when people stop smoking. To screw with the number one method people are using to stop smoking is just wrong, with no studies, or data, they just act on fear mongering nonsense.

Vaping is classed as a nicotine product in the UK as well Russell, so effectively banned in all places where cigs are banned - don't look to be any change to that over here either .... despite the Health Services promoting vaping as a effective cessation method

It's a shame they don't concentrate their energies on something that is actually very harmful, like diesel emissions. Maybe if they'd done that there wouldn't be so many asthmatics around. I suppose that hits them too close to home though.

Quick to put messages on fag packets saying that smoking kills, yet you never see any vehicle with the same slogan saying "Vehicles kill", which they do.

When they decided to de-brand all fag packets, they never once considered the poor shop assistants who are doing Stevie Wonder impersonations standing in front of the sea of identical packets looking for your brand and fighting with the sliding doors which never stay still, asking for the third time which ones you want. Poor buggers.

As a matter of interest would you smoke in the grounds of a hospital though with signs all around forbidding you to do so ?. The other day I saw around a dozen people smoking
at the Royal Free in Hampstead in a smoke free area ! Amazing. Later that day a similar number were standing there non smoking !. So clearly a case of it only takes one and the
rest follow like sheep.

At our hospitals they have installed an exclusion zone encompassing the entire estate of the hospital, while at the same time the cars, buses, taxis and ambulances pass in front of the main entrance pumping out fumes by the ton. That really is double standards in my book and if I stuffed all 20 fags in my mouth and smoked it would be infitessimally small by comparison.

I bet you feel the same about horse manure, Mike. A lot of people feel the same way about it, but I think they're not giving it a fair go.

The trick is to steam it for a VERY short time -don't boil, it'll just turn to slop. Then while it's still hot add some ground ginger and some previously pan-fried diced onion. Some prefer to feed the ginger and onion to the horse, to give it time to marinade in the horse's gut, but I found the results to vary quite a bit as different horses do different size shits.

The only problem is that it can be a little low on nutrients, so serving with dog vomit can restore some protein and iron.

Sorry Marco, couldn't resist! Personally I only like Savoy cabbage, and even that doesn't seem as good as it used to, a lot less green for some reason.

As with everything. If you start with crap ingredients, the meal is doomed, no matter how handy you are in the kitchen.

I've just got back from a carvery meal, and I'd say it's the best I've ever had. And all the ingredients seemed to be of a high quality, at least for an uneducated oik like me. There were so many different things to choose from, and I chose ALL of them. Honestly the plate was piled so high you could ski down it in the winter.

Now I'm back home, with the laptop resting comfortably on my greatly enlarged belly. Too full for a dessert, so I'll give it an hour then go seek out some ice cream. :)

Generally that's true, although good cooks can also make the best out of mediocre ingredients, simply by knowing how to 'cheer them up'/maximise the flavour:)

A good example is bog-standard (battery farmed) supermarket chicken, which on its own, tastes of cardboard, but cooked well, with a nice sauce/gravy, to lift the blandness, and/or the judicious use of herbs and spices, said 'chicken' is transformed into something that's approaching edible!

Lol... Now you see that's a personal bugbear of mine! Firstly, greedy-guts, I hope you ate it all, and didn't waste any because 'your eyes were bigger than your stomach' (as my mum used to say);)

Secondly, I *really* hate plates piled up high with food, so that everything is all crammed together in one big 'homogenised mess'.

I just think it looks bad [as I'm someone who values nice presentation, otherwise I can find food distinctly unappetising], plus it makes you feel obliged to finish it all, which is the easiest way to eat more than you need, and end up a porker....

With a carvery, I prefer to start off with small amounts of food on my plate, which I know I'll eat, then go back for more, once that's finished, and repeat the process until I'm sated. After all, rationing isn't in place, and the next lot of grub will be both fresher and warmer than the food mountain that's growing cold on your plate!:eyebrows:

Leaving some food uneaten on my plate? Really? We haven't met have we? :) I NEVER leave anything, and always know what I can and cannot manage. I come from a time when food wasn't wasted, and I never do. One of the worst sounds to me is the sound of food being scraped into a bin. Winds me up.

I certainly piled it high, but it didn't turn into a mass of crap, any more than the Sagrada Familia is a pile of rocks. And In any case I'm not too worried about how photogenic my meal is. It's only 24 hours from toilet, for God's sake (I could hear Gene Pitney singing that last bit). I have always had a good appetite, and don't need my food to look pretty to tempt me.

And if I cared what others thought of my "foodus operandi" I'd be more concerned about being "that greedy pig who's going back yet again for more - maybe he doesn't get fed at home"

So there! Now where's that ice cream?

Just shows how we're different! Glad you don't waste food, as it makes my blood boil, especially the fat bastards who pile their plates up high, then leave half of it, which often happens at carveries, with the desserts, (as they've usually stuffed themselves to the gunnels by then)!:steam:

I'd make the greedy fuckers pay for their wastage!!

Anyway, I bet when you have folks round for lunch or dinner, you bring out plates of food to the table, already filled with what you've 'guessed' is going to be enough for them, or what they'd have picked (say, veg-wise) from the selection offered, rather than supplying them with empty plates, and a some bowls filled with whatever food is being served, so that they can help themselves?

The former is a very British thing, and the latter is the continental way;)

I really hate folk trying to predict what I'm going to eat! Biggest bugbear? My plate piled up high with potatoes, as Brits are obsessed with them (I don't take many, preferring veg instead), and then feeling obliged to eat them all, so as not to offend.....!

 Eating out with the in-laws is just the worst!

Some of Mrs. P's family always order steak, and it's never done the way they want it. Underdone, overdone, too tough, too fatty. And I have to sit across from them, with faces like bulldogs licking piss off a thistle. I say, "Why don't you just order something else?" "Oh no, I like a good steak". Like a good whinge more like.

I honestly don’t think I could work in a restaurant. I always leave a good tip, when deserving, and try to be as easy to get along with as possible. But if I had to deal with people like I’ve been out to eat with, I’d be physically ejecting them from the premises! And I fear my tips would suffer.

Yes absolutely, and I've no intention of telling the proprietor this - don't want to spoil a good thing. :)

Marco
24-09-2018, 10:22
Lol - I think they'll know full well, as it'll all be costed out and factored into the equation, for securing your repeat custom. The profit margins in the takeaway food business are excellent (I know this from experience, as my parents ran fish & chip shops for years), so the cost of any 'excess food' can easily be absorbed.

The reality is that if a food takeaway business is being run properly (and profitably), then there is no valid reason not to give customers more food than most of them will eat in one meal, knowing that if the quality is good, they'll soon be back for more, which they're unlikely to do if they're left feeling 'shortchanged'...;)

Our local Indian takeaway offers a deal whereby, for an extra £1.65 (baring in mind that most of their main curries are under £6, as standard), you can 'go large' with the main curry, whether it be chicken, lamb, veg or whatever, and you get an extra medium-sized container, jam-packed FULL of whatever curry it is you've ordered - baring in mind too that their standard containers are twice the size of the ones that the likes of rice normally comes in, and they're also filled to the brim!

So for less than £8, you're getting a huge container full of (top-notch) curry, plus an extra medium-sized one. Therefore, with rice (which is similarly plentiful) and a Nan bread, there's usually enough food for me, for THREE meals, never mind two!:D

And clearly it's profitable, as they've been doing it here for years:)

ketamine is technically an anesthetic not a horse tranquilizer ... it is used also for an antidepressant too but in much smaller doses ... vets do use it as well as they do many human drugs.
