Hi All - Didn't want to bury this question in a RCM thread .....

But, finally splashed out on a RCM and need some distilled water (I have found IPA/ilfotol suppliers). I assume 99.9% purified is needed or better.

I've found a number of suppliers and they use different processes; the level of purification is either described, or not or is vague; costs obviously differ as does postage with some being free (nice !).

Question is: what spec do you use and where do you get yours from in the UK ?

thanks in advance

richard

You can get distilled water from any pharmacy shop.

Deionised water from Halfords is what I use for cleaning records and photography film, never had an issue.

Or any hardware shop/ironmongers. Sold for use with steam irons. £1.50 for 5 litres.

thanks guys (some local replies too !).

So are we saying that ANY distilled water is OK and not to worry about it being 99.9% pure ?

I can see this question creating a minor boil of controversy LOL :)

How long is a piece of string?

Pure Water:

Low conductivity water is described by ASTM D5464 as water with a conductivity of < 100 μS/cm.
The pH of high purity water is generally in the range of 5.5 to 7.5, depending on the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the water.

Purified water that has very few ionic species is said to be low in alkalinity, ionic strength, or have low conductivity/high resistivity.

Pure water samples include distilled water, deionized water, well water, and rain water.

Unless your turntable is setup in a medical grade cleanroom I wouldn’t get too caught up in that last 0.1% of purity. Falling dust is more of a concern than tiny amounts of residue that might remain on the record. Just don’t use tap or bottled mineral water.

De-ionised water still contains particles. Filtered water contains ions.

This is my favourite potion:

I do believe it has a short shelf, and as you need literally a few drops of it to make quite a large quality of cleaning solution it can go off over time. What that time frame is, I have no clue.
There is a chap on eBay who sells it in small batches, if it helps.

Sorry Jo for not replying earlier. I got a 1litre from here : http://www.tetenaluk.com/ilford-black-white-ilfotol-wetting-agent-liquid-concentrate-1-litre.html

.... Was the cheapest at the time but p&p is a big factor!

Yes

Yeah, de-ionised water has been passed through ion exchange resins. This is used in laboratories in preference to distilled water.

Freezer defrost water, thrice filtered. DIY bargain if you've got an older, non self-defrosting one and can be bothered.

I'm sure last time I looked they sell this stuff in Wilko's and The Range.

Can't remember now if it was Distilled or De-ionised but it was astoundingly cheap. :)

Thanks all.

I checked locally but only found deionised - which was cheaper compared to the distilled obviously. I dare say there would be no difference between them in actual use and post cleaning in the longer term.

But I've ended up with 5l distilled from the web with free delivery. I previously did some research and practically all the 'recipes' on forums used distilled. All I need now is a pair of ear defenders......

done a little research since my previous comments and it backs up what Shaun stated.
it appears de-ionised is the purist form of water and is preferred in labs. i guess for cleaning records it would not matter.
its just easier for me as i already have an RO/DI water treatment device for my fish keeping.

Truly guys I think the only difference may be that de-ionised is better because it has absolutely nothing in it and therefore has an affinity to pick up and dissolve more 'crap' from the record. I was once informed that is why it should not be consumed internally. It may well remove many valuable nutrients and minerals. We used it in many of the labs I have worked in by the tens of litres.
